Schools in the Federation

Where would someone go for a degree in Acheology and Anthropology?

I know of the SFA, the Daystrom Institute... But that's about it. Are there any other "known" institutions of higher learning out there for a Human to attend?

I am sure all of the major colleges that exist today would still be there such as Harvard, Yale, Berkely, etc..., but those specific to Star Trek, I couldn't tell ya.

I would assume this as well. Many civilian scientists (archaeologists prominant) have been mentioned in the series. Wasn't there an ep where Picard was to lead a symposium? He rattled off 4-5 high level archaeologists. I don't think Prof. Galen was SFA trained, even though he taught at SFA.

Well, we know that Oxford University still exists in the 24^th century, and of course there's the Vulcan Science Academy.

Highly technological societies will need more and more people with advanced degrees, so it's probably safe to say that most major universities will continue to exist - even those destroyed in WWIII would probably be rebuilt. Further most other planets will probably have multiple teaching institutions.

I once played a human Starfleet xeno-archaeologist who had graduated from the Vulcan Science Academy. I think most any major Federation member would have at least one higher learning school, and that you could pretty much make up anything that sounds good.

In 'All Good Things' Data was the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics (as held by Newton and Hawking) at Cambridge, but I can't recall a reference to Oxford.

Of course if Cambridge is still around then Oxford has to be, we wouldn't let the Tabs carry on without us to remind them who's best. :p

Oxford will always be there. It must...it's my alma mater.

There's no reason not to suppose that the great learning institutions would still be present: Sorbonne, Oxbridge, Harvard, Apollo Hair College.

I agree with many of the posters as well-the GREAT insitutions will exist- Especially my beloved University Of TEXAS in Austin.

Honestly, I would advise against going to SF Academy for archeology, as they tend to deal with spacial sciences more and you have to take a comission with SF upon graduation. I would suggest the Vulcan Science Academy for things like that, or any of the established universities on Earth with a good archeology/anthropology department, such as the University of Chicago.

Star Fleet Academy is trying to turn out good members of Star Fleet. To that end, it will emphasize general sciences, as well as covering leadership (at this point, it's assumed anyone who could get it is potential captain material, I'd thing), plus a lot of material related to serving on starships and starbases.

You'd get a solid background there, but if you wanted to make it your life's work, you'd go somewhere with a more focused curriculum. You might even read ahead of time to see which practicing scholars you like, and then seek out the institution(s) where they teach. Some renowned instructors might teach several places (transporters and/or holodecks make it easy).

Of course if you gratuate at the top of SFA then maybe you could be granted a leave to attend a graduate program before starting your Starfleet commitment.

I'd also think that Starfleet would have some sort of accelerated training and placement for those that already have advanced degrees; You know automatic Ensign for Nurses; LT jg or full LT for Doctors and Engineers, etc.

I can't recall the exact episode ( I think it was who mourns for Adonis? or something like that) the one where the greek gods are in in TOS - anyway, I distinctly recall they had a yound crewmember who was their 'history expert' (can't remember her rank or exact title) but my point in this long and rambling lacking of detail post is that they do indeed exist within starfleet :)

I suspect that there are possibley external learning annexes for 'extra' studies - the prime example being medical doctors. Starfleet academy is only 4 years, most medical doctors train for longer than this so I suspect they have additional years in external institutions to round off their more general 'Starfleet' education. Certainly several people in Starfleet seem to have advanced degrees from the Daystrom insittute etc, which points to their being either prior study or post graduation (or mid graduation even?) it's all generally a bit wolly. One thing I guess you can say though is that allot of the people in Starfleet are within 1% of the top of their respective generations.. they are the cream of the crop.. so manybe they can get a medical degree and learn how to pilot a shuttle in 4 years ?:)

Lets not forget that Khan's gf/wife was a history expert too!

What would you expect college sports to look like in the 23rd and 24th centuries?

I mean in the 24th parishee squares seems to be the rage.
In TOS, a more classical curricula seemed to be in vogue with Sulu selecting fencing.

Just wondering, could anyone imagine Kirk, Spock, Picard, Bashir, etc. playing the Starship Troopers-brand of football?
