How do i know what kind of System and Life Support to choose?
Well, that sort of depends how durable you think those systems need to be. Here are some guidelines:
Most ships seem to have Class 2 or better in both systems. Especially Starfleet ships, since they stress triple reducancy. Class 3 or better is more likely in TNG era. Ships that don't expect to see combat, and aren'T supposed to be off the beaten track, like cargo ships, can get away with less.
As a general rule, tHe larger the vessel the higher the ratings should be. A Size 9 ship can soak up 3 times the damage that a size 3 craft can, so it will take 3 times the number of rolls on the SYSTEMS DAMAGE charts (it is acutally possible to design a big ship that is almost certain to stop functioning long before it runs out of Structure Points).
Military ships need more just so they can go the distance in combat. If you build some sort awe inspriing Battleship, you don't want to have the thing shut down after taking one or two hits. Likewise, losing Life support and having to abandon ship can reduce the ship's effectiveness.
Deep Space ships, and other designs that will be sent off away from civilization need more, since they can'T expect any help if the systems fail.
Think of Ops and Life Support as two "off switches". Consider just how important is is for your ship design to keep going and build accordinly.
Those are my guidelines. Hope that helps.
