Not that I don't think War of the World Spielberg version is going to be better than the the original. After all, the highlight is casting Dakota Fanning. The lowlight is ... well, casting Tom Cruise. :p
Peter jackson didn't call it 'Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings' :D he also hasn't technically 'remade' anything, it is the first time the whole trilogy has been committed to celuloid. The animated version is SO badly hacked it's barelly lord of the rings :D
The lest we speak of King Kong the better :D
He is right though, I am not sure what this adaptation of War of the Worlds is going to do for cinema. Speilberg used to be about originality, now it's err... time he moved on! :)
He's probably miffed because George Lucas didn't let him direct -- not even to unit direct one scene -- of the Star Wars Prequel. :p
I wondered why he wanted to do War of the Worlds.
According to the contract between the film industry and the director's union, films are consider to be "A Speilberg Film", or who ever is the director. That seems to be the state of things that it is the directors' film no matter what. So a leap to titling the film as Director's Name of Film is not much. Considering that it is the director's job to get out of the actors what the writer(s) wanted, this is bogus to me (in either way). Although if they are labeling to distancing it from the original do to changes made then that might be acceptable. For example, Battlestar: Galatica's remake was called Ronald Moore's Battlestar: Galatica that would be alright since it is different yet still similar to the original Battlestar: Galatica.
Did not Spielberg also say he (and others too) wanted to do a film in the Star Wars universe and was turned down by Lucas?Quote:

They are friends as they worked on several movies together including Indiana Jones movies so he may have given a Spielberg an over view of the prequels. Lucas feels a little mifted at Speilberg for lifting plot elements. But they seem to be still working together on the 4th Indiana Jones film.

Probably just something to keep busy with and generate some income as he has a larger film company to fund, DeamWorks SWG, on top of Amblin Entertainment production company. Maybe he expected to be working on his Star Wars film or the fourth Indiana Jones film (I think it is on its 4 plot outline or possible scripts.) but since that was scuttled by Lucas he need to find something else.
