Are you prepared?

Just a questionare, to see how prepared we are.

Myself, I have enough for three days for all members of my household, and have enough supplies within my vehicle to provide for two people for three days.

I understand that it is insufficient, however it's a start. I am planning on getting more.

My plan is to get one survival package every paycheck. Furthermore, I have additional supplies to supplement what is within these packages.

What is your plan?

I got a emergency preparedness kit that will last me up to five days.

but believe it or not, but 40% of those who have answered, state that they don't have any supplies, and that the government should provide it for them. This type of thinking will put greater strain on authorities when an event occurs, then if everyone had a minimal amount of resources available to them individually.

You know, I voted "no, I don't have supplies and don't plan on getting more", living in a disaster-free area, and I thought: "isn't it paranoid to get supplies when you live in a safe zone?"

And then I thought, when I was a kid, during vacations on a "disaster-free area" than we survived flooding than could have been very serious, and a forest fire that could have gotten us isolated.

So thanks for this thread as it got me to think a bit farther than the tip of my nose...

That's okay. In Hawaii, we are basically rolling the dice during Hurricane season, and there is always the winter floods, and a reason why it is the only US state that have a tsunami warning center.

And let's face it, we're cut off from the mainland. Not to be rude but we don't expect help to come quickly from you guys. Shrugs.

BTW, I don't know which choice to vote on since I already said I have a five-day emergency supply. But come to think of it, I'm thinking of adding two days' worth.

As a trained mountain search and rescue member, I have supplies for most of the people within 50 meters of me, except for food. Food, I have between 3-10 day worth depending on the day of the week (if all hell breaks loose on a Sat. morning I'm set for quite a while).
As far as disasters go, blizzards are the big one (1 in last 2 years), followed by tornados (2 near enough to worry about in the last 5 years), Man-made transportation related (1 or 2 in the last 5 years), Earthquake (4.5 about 8 years ago, it was fun), no real flooding within 5 miles of my house. Right up against the mountain side we've had serious land-slides, and flash flooding within the last 2 years.

Depends exactly what goes wrong. My mother has about 3 months of food in the Freezer, should there be a national shortage, but then if the electricity goes out... :)

Other than a couple of particularly violent storms this summer where I live is extremelly dull.. we have no sources of earthquakes, we can't really get massive storm cells, because of the local geography, we are not particularly prone to massive flooding, and we are well above sealevel so most water drains away within a few days. I think the only threats which could really hit us woud be a) part of the sea floor of Norway collapsing, causing a 100 foot high tidal wave (hey it happened once before in errr.. well err 10,000 years ago or something b) a super caldera volcano going off, c) Meteorite strike d) global thermo nuclear war.. in either case nothing I pack is going to help me much :)

Isn't this a bit silly. The problem with forseen disasters is that they are regular coccurances. Most people in Flood Plains or in Hurricane country are indeed prepared for those events.

Foreseen disasters are not however the problem.

Its the unforseen, either by scale, no warning system, or sheer lack of experience of the phenomenon that causes the problem, and by the very nature of an event that simply has not been predicted and prepared for.

No. We would not be prepared for it.

It was mentioned by my parents that if the New Orleans events happened here that the rest of Europe would have been rallying about us, as I am sure they offered to do so for the US. However the simple fact is, that if such an event were to hit the UK, then that would also cover France, Holland, hell, most of the low-lying European countries, and we would all have to help each other. But then, due to population density if the same events struck here, we would have a far bigger logistical problem in the evacuation.

It saddens me to have seen how bad it has got. I wish I could say I was surprised at the level of looting and violence, but my opinion of Humans is quite low anyway. Shocked, yes, Surprised, not really.

Would it help if we were all prepared for the worst? Probably not, the people that suffered worst here anyway were the poor, just how many months food would they have to put by again? What life-saving perishables would they have to purchase and not use to ensure survival? And when this is worked out, where would they be getting the money to pay for all this?

No. I am not prepared for this level of natural disaster, but then I live in a country with light storms and very minor natural events (a couple of damaging tornados in the last couple of decades and 2 very, very minor earthquakes). The only problems that we have would be the entirely unforseen event... And we all know my opinion on preparing for that! :)

I've got all that, but at the moment, it's about 152 miles west of here. I did have it with me when I bugged out of New Orleans last week. Luckily, I met up with family & didn't have to use more than a few bottles of water & half a bag of granola. Even more lucky, I didn't have to use any of the guns I packed (and was generally packing). Still was quite glad to have them given all the reports of carjackings & worse.

Well, it's not a matter of preparing for the event, be it foreseen or unforeseen, but if you happen to live through it, can you survive the day after?

So then . . . I guess if we can all get the transportation, if anything happens, we all go to Pheonix's place? Oh and bring your rations ;) He still needs food.

Ah...I only have two extra beds, and three couches. All of them are cat territory, you've been warned. I should also mention the vast array of slimy pets too, spiders, lizards, poisonous frogs...oh and the two homo sapiens minorous.

I'm a little low on 12 gauge ammo, got about 3 days supply of drinking water, more in food, powdered milk, batteries etc.

I should probably get another case of bottled water.

You never know when a storm's going to bring a tornado and drop trees across every way in and out of where I live.

There is also something to be said about being prepared for disasters that might hit you. I live in North Central Ohio, in the middle of a nice little depression.
We dont get Hurricains, obviously, and I've been told from child hood that Tornados wont hit us due our gegraphic situation. So, what meager supplies I have right now are useful for that 2 hour-to 2 week period of time when a severe thunderstorm blows in and knocks out the power.

Now, what i do get is snow. This winter we had a terrible ice storm right around X-mas (which led to a house guest that led to....oh you dont care). I was lucky, no loss of utilities but I'm thinking of stocking up t his fall just in case.

As for the big unpredicables (sudden earthquakes, the mid west is due, you know!, WWIII), how do you plan for those?

I got canned food, jarred food, dried food, and bottled water. I got medicines and an advanced first-aid kit.

And for defense, well, I never go into detail about my weapons cache, but I can post a notice warning that looters will be riddled, and I won't mean "Why did the chicken cross the road."

And should worse ever come to really bad, I could retreat to my family's 73-acre farm-and-woodland, drink springwater and eat apples, blackberries,deer, rabbits, squirrel, and crayfish for a quite some time.
