The Alternative Defiant-class later kinown as the Nova-class
Here's a Veriant of the Defiant-class from the Star Trek Deep Space Nine Technical Manual that is the predacessor to the Nova-class. Some of the Discription is from the Spacedock files in the Federation pdf file as it does pertain to the alternative design.
Alterative Defiant-Class (Nova-Class veriant Starship Design)
This design is the version of the Defiant-class that was rejected as a vessel and later picked as a milder version starship a Nova-Class Research/Laboratory Vessel in the early design theory. Headily armed and equipped with the latest in technology this little vessel would easily be able to take on the Standard Defiant-Class in single Combat and hold it’s own as a warship.

Description and Notes
Fleet Data: The Nova-class Research/Laboratory ship has an intriguing design history. Originally planned as a supplement to, or extension of the Galaxy-class Explorer line, Starfleet envisioned it as a more dedicated exploration and research vessel, with fewer of the military capabilities of the Galaxy-class, but more advanced sensors and scientific systems. However, following the conclusion of the Federation-Cardassian War, Starfleet Command decided to scrap the existing Nova-class Design project in favor of as-yet undetermined smaller design.
At about this same time, designers working on the Defiant Development Project were researching a turning point in their work. The ASDB rejected several of their initial, more traditional proposed designs on the grounds they were not appropriate for a heavy escort role envisioned for the Defiant-class ship. Starfleet wanted something more compact and streamlined. Fortunately, members of the Nova Project chanced across some of the shelved Defiant designs and realized that one of them, a small vessel with an arrowhead-shaped saucer section and two dorsal nacelle pylons, was perfect for their own needs. They took that design, refined and revised it slightly, and soon got Starfleet Command to accept it as the Nova-Class ship.
Headily armed and equipped with the latest in technology this little vessel would easily be able to take on the Standard Defiant-Class in single Combat and hold it’s own as a warship. Build as an Escort Vessel this Variant has heavy scientific capabilities.
Officially Starfleet never constructed this Version, yet, as the Nova-class was being constructed several unofficially disappeared or lost track of from the construction yards of Antaries yards. Deep with in the dark recesses of Starfleet’s Black Operations branch of the Federation it is rumored that there has been a hand full of these vessels equipped with Federation Versions of Cloaking devices. Build and used as a Covert operations vessel.
the Valiant-class or version of the Defiant-class
The Vailint-class is a version of the Defiant that has no forward weapons pod in the bow of tha ship. this version is the organic vesion that was thought about during the design phase of the Defiant. Fleet Data:
Alternative notes: the Defiant Alternative to the smooth brutish looking starship appearance of the standard Defiant-Class. This version is the alternative that was only a vision on paper in the creators mind. The minor changes to the stats and the exterior appearance gives the ship a more organic appearance similar to that of a Romulan Warbird.
The major difference in this defiant-class and the original is the lack of the forward nose a.k.a. the warhead. This lack of the warhead drops the warhead itself and the forward the torpedo launcher.
This Defiant-class, I have seen referred to as Valiant-class. Whether named Defiant or Valiant this little ship is just as well armed as the Defiant assigned to Deep Space Nine. A heavy escort by any definition these vessels as clearly an advance warship capable of taking on vessels that are twice the size. Heavily armed and adequately shielded this vessel could have easily been a warship used by all federation forces.
Although this vessel is different from that of the Defiant that we know and love this would make a wonderful warships in some future adventure or just as an adversary vessel with some tweaking.
