Advancement Questions

My players have just received an advancement, and I have found some problems with the advancement process. So here are some questions about the creation and advancement process.

-Changing Profession:
My Chief of Security (Starship Officer/Security Officer) wants to change into the Soldier profession. So if I’m correct, he must spend his 5 picks (no prerequisites) to join the Soldier class. Then he has to choose from witch two professions he may spend picks to acquire professional abilities, and raise professional skills.

-Changing from Starship Officer Elite Profession and the Starship Duty Ability:
My Chief Operation officer wants to change his Operation Officer Elite Profession into the Command Elite Profession. Normally he has to spend his 5 picks to join the Command Elite Profession, but what happens if he takes the Starship Duty Ability? The first thing is clear; he doesn’t need to meet the prerequisites. But does he need to spend the 5 picks? I ask this because the Star Ship Officer Elite Profession general info stated the Following “Upon gaining the Starship Duty professional ability, starship officers immediately choose one elite profession of their parent organization". Does this mean that my player has to spend 3 picks (Leaving 2 other picks to spend) to gain the Starship Duty ability, Acquire the Command Elite profession, and gainst one Tier I ability from the newly chosen Starship Officer Elite profession?

Based on the latest errata, the combination of Starship Officer and Starship Officer professions count as one profession. So this character would be able to advance all of his professions.

The first instance of Starship Duty waives both the advancement picks and the prerequisites for a Starship Officer Elite Profession. Any instances after the first waive one or the other, but not both. Thus, your Ops officer can either ignore the prerequisites or the picks, player's choice. Note that Starship Duty cannot be taken using the Innovative edge.

It is my understanding that Starship Officer and Soldier are both basic professions and Security Officer is an elite profession. As far as my understaning of the rules go, you cannot change basic professions. If your Security officer wants professional skills from the soldier profession he needs to buy the Innovative edge.

As far as your other question goes, I agree with Doug. Starship Duty only negates the need for prerequisites or the 5 pick cost for changing elite professions - not both. In my game I always encouraged my players to meet the skill prereqs and take Starship Duty to reduce the 5 pick cost to 3. It just made more sense to me that if you wanted to transfer branches, you should have the skills as proof of of your qualifications.

Doug's got it spot-on. That particular rule has been changed in the latest errata to bring the game more in-line with the LOTR implementation of the rules.

Note that Innovative applies to Professional Abilities. To get Professional Skills, you need to take the Rounded Professional Ability (from the Starship Officer profession, IIRC).
