favorite nontrek science fiction survey

Asimov. It seems that most of his works took place in the same universe. I read the 12 Robot City books in jr. high. I started reading Foundation, but it somehow bored me.

Clarke's Space Oddysey series. You know, 2001, 2010, 2061, 3001. The only one I read in written form was 2061, but I did see the two movies.

Card's Enderverse. The only one of these I read was Ender's Game. I'd put Card as my favorite sci fi guy, Asimov's replacement. I hope the movie happens.

Quantum Leap. I hated some episodes, but the premise was good and the best of it was very good. Bakula would make a perfect Trek captain. I wonder if his character would be a singer.

Time Trax. Many of you might not remember this one. The main character was visiting the present from the future hunting down criminals. I never saw the pilot.

Stargate. I did not have parasitic relations with that Goauld! I am not a crook! I'd make this the third of the big three in onscreen sci fi.

Star Wars. Second only to Trek.

Seven Days: I've enjoyed it in the past, but I don't like gritty shows.

Right now, my favorite SF (space opera, really) books are David Weber's Honor Harrington series.

On TV, Andromeda is showing promise. The first season is already much better than first season TNG and 90% of Voyager.

LUGTrek isn't really dead. Not as long as we remember it.

I like Andromeda when I watch it, but what I hate is Earth Final Conflict. And of course, you could say Star Wars is not science fiction either. Would Captain Proton be more Space Opera as well?

Media - Babylon 5 by a mile. I'm also enjoying Andromeda and Farscape when I catch it (not too often of late). Every once in a while the Doctor Who mood hits me.

Written - The Foundation and Robots novels by Asimov and the Dune series by Herbet brought me into SF and I still enjoy them. I also enjoy Jack Vance, Frederick Pohl, and Alfred Bester. I enjoy some Card (esp. Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead), though I sometimes wish he'd go for some more three-dimensional characters - I like compelling villains with motivations I understand and heroes with some flaws. I've just begun reading the Pern series and have so far enjoyed it.

d'oh! I forgot Back to the Future. I'm serious this time, as if I wasn't about Galaxy Quest. I really classify BTTF more as SF than comedy. I wonder how feasable novels would be detailing Doc's first trip to the future and his time in 1885 before Marty showed up. And just what did he mean by "Nope, already been there?" Alternate universe anyone? And when Marty first returned to his present, did his parents remember and recognize him from 1955? Maybe that's why it's considered primarily comedy.

How could I forget Farscape!?!

I'll chime in with another vote for Honor Harrington as well as other David Weber stuff. Apocalypse Troll is a treat!

I'm a dyed in the wool Heinlein fan.

Stargate is cool. Farscape is cool. Andromeda might be cool- maybe. LaFemme Nikita was techno enough to have an SF edge. And I really like Dark Angel.

Oh yeah, another vote for Pournelle's universe of the CoDominion as well. Did you know that Bjo Trimble invited Jerry to play D&D with her once upon a time? Jerry intended to take a recon team from the 42nd, equipped with silver-tipped bullets for the rifles, holy water, etc. The game never materialized, but I had a chuckle reading over Falkenburg's 'orders' to the recon company.

Also how could I forget Starship Troopers, the Novel not the movie.

OKay here goes;

TV: Farscape (I just love this show...each episode drags me in further and further until I have nothing left for any other show).
Battlestar Galactica (Not for what it was, but for what it could be).
Buck Rogers (I love cheese and that was au gratin).

Film: Slipstream (If you haven't seen it go and rent it now).
Enemy Mine (Great classic sci-fi story).
Last Starfighter (Greetings Starfighter, you have been recruited by the Star League to defend the Frontier against Xhur and the Kodan armada).
Tron (Classic "what if" type of movie).

Books: I am not that much of a Sci-Fi reader, though there was this book I read when I was a kid, it was called "The (blank) Incident". It was about these cadets undergoing a graduation exercise on an arid world when the enemy attacks and destroys the Academy. Then the two students (and one teacher I believe) make their way to the poles to try and radio for help (there is a base camp at the temperate polls). I cannot for the life of me remember the name of this book...that said if anyone out there remembers I would be for ever grateful as I have been looking for it for years and have had no luck thus far.

Oh and DUNE, just cause it is so intricate.

Is okay, kaiddin. No one listen to Zathras. Not even when someone talking as Zathras. So no one get tired of Zathras. Excepting, perhaps, Zathrus. But no one listen to him, either.

And how the heck could I forget 'Mote in God's Eye'?

My favourite non-trek universe is Pournelle's Co-Dommimium series, specifically Falkenberg's Legion (I'm more a fan of military Sci-fi).

When I can catch it I like Andromeda. SG-1 is my current favourite sci-fi series on tv...Keep forgetting when Farscape is on, do want to see it however.

Of course we cannot forget B5, I agree the acting wasn't all that good at times, but still it was an excellent series. I do have a tendency to "forget" about the 5th season, however...Man that was bad.
