ICON - Ships of the Star Fleet
From my upcoming LUG TOS guide, "Ships of the Star Fleet". I'm going to try to take a stab at getting an ICON version of much of the TOS ships that are floating around here that anyone's actually ever heard of. This entry is the Cook class, mentioned in the LUG TOS book but not given any information. I don't have direct access to the book, unfortunately, so I forgot the specific ship mentioned - bonus points for who can name it.
COOK CLASS SCOUT
With the Baton Rogue proving successful for its time, Star Fleet planned to take the components of the ship to create a line of similar, but smaller vessels. A destroyer and scout type was planned making use of the Baton Rogue’s primary hull and VX-20 warp engines. The scout would end up becoming the Cook class vessel.
The Cook would enjoy some moderate success along the frontier, mapping out the ‘empty spaces’ between established Federation outposts and performing much-needed geological surveys on planets which had come under Federation control. Unfortunately rising tensions with the Klingon Empire would keep the Cook’s program limited, as the need for stronger defense far outweighed the need for scientific research at the time.
The Four Year’s War would be the death knell for the Cook class, proving the technology’s relative obsolence in the face of Klingon fire. Three of the seven vessels were lost in rapid succession during the war, with the rest soon pulled out of line duty. With the arrival of the technologically superior Hermes class scout, the Cook class was formally retired from service at the war’s end.

Ships of the Class
Though 20 ships of the class were originally planned, only seven would be constructed due to the onset of the Four Year’s War. Cook class vessels sadly showed their relative obsolescence in that conflict and no new vessels were ordered.
