Targeting Specific Systems
I came across something in the NG that I really like, but I don't know that Decipher ever incorporated it into any of the specific rules for starship combat.
On p. 131, it says "Missile Weapons, such as torpedoes, lack a beam weapon's ability to target specific systems, but make up for it with their greater range and destructive force." [emphasis mine]
I was wondering why the min/maxers among my group (or anyone else) wouldn't just simply use photon (or quantum) torpedoes all the time, as opposed to phasers. They do more damage, have better range, and are overall just a way more impressive (and deadly) weapon. Sure they're expendable, but when you're in a fight for your life and you've got 300 of them, why not use what you need? (and then refill at the nearest Starbase?)
When one looks at the maneuver of Target System, it doesn't list anything other than Lock On as a prerequisite, but it seems from the line I quoted above that it would be reasonable to make this only doable with beam weapons (thus phasers, and not torpedoes).
That feels more 'Trek' to me, anyway, and gives a good use for phasers over torpedoes (in some circumstances).
Anybody seen anything like this among the house rules out there? Or has this ever been addressed before (that you've seen)?
