so what's up with Transwarp in space dock?

Reading Space Dock Transwarp requires 15xSC in SU and DOESN'T include a warp system, yet we all saw several episodes showing a Transwarp coil being a small device capable of being mounted in any size craft [from shuttles to capitol sized ships, one would assume you might need multiple coils for the largest ships)(from what I gleaned the coil added the necessary power increase to the existing warp system/deflector system, allowing the vessel to open a transwarp conduit)

IMHO it should be more like
Transwarp coil (1 coil needed/4SC)
SU=SCx3, adds to existing warp system
PWR SCx15
allows vessel to travel at 38180TSL (warp 9.99949) for as long as the Plasma Injection System allows (use the maximum warp speed duration as the cut off for when the drive needs to shut down)

Since we're talking about tiny portable props, I'd assume it's not a power thing, it's a precision thing.

From Memory-alpha Transwarp was used:

ST3 - was ultimately unsuccessful

TNG: Descent - Borg transwarp corridors are likened to falling into a fast moving river and getting swept along, so in this case the ship isn't generating the corridor, it is taking advantage of existing infrastructure

Voyager: Threshold - Turned the crew into salamanders

Voyager: Dark Frontier - even with a Borg expert and an intact transwarp coil, Voyager didn't have the structural strength to use it for more than 20,000 light years, as it was causing structural failures (though why she never used it for shorter hops is Janeway's stupidity, let alone removing it afterward)

The Voth (in Distant Origin) did get it right, but they also had a 20 million+ year history to get the design right.


So if you are putting transwarp into a ship to travel freely you need to overcome structural issues, prevent the crew from changing, and generate all the power internally. That would involve redesigning the ship for better stress handling, more structural generators, some sort of field to protect the crew, and a large power source. Even more importantly, transwarp research has likely been going on since ST3, but they still don't have it right. If almost a century of research hasn't succeeded, why is everyone expecting sudden changes to occur? Starfleet is still using equipment from that time, without any changes (TNG: Relics).


Of course, the fact that Traveling at warp 9.985 (fastest in Spacedock) only needs 50 power, yet a single shield can need 200 power means that the power demands need to be re-examined for the various systems.

my point is that with the addition of the transwarp coil to an existing warp system allows the Borg to create conduits as they go (these temporary conduits do last unlike the ones created via a Hub), but as seen in Voyager these coils could be added to any type of warp system (including very small systems such as in shuttles, which BTW have only mediocre structural integrity fields, inertial damping fields etc). Also the Borg project a second structural integrity field ahead of the vessel while in a transwarp conduit.

As far as Voyager Threshold, Tom Paris achieved warp10 (infinite velocity, basically instantaneous travel to anywhere in the galaxy or beyond)), transwarp doesn't go any where near that sort of velocity (transwarp can achieve warp 9.99x20 [I know warp 9.982 is maximum warp velocity as of 2376ad, but don't have an exact TSL for w9.982, but it would be a number lower then the w9.99 TSL number] in most cases or around 143,840TSL as per canon)

so all one needs is a coil, a chronoton field generator and the ability to project a second SIF ahead of the vessel (IMHO su would equal scx3 as stated in the OP), and ANY vessel no matter what it's SIF/IDF can enter a Hub maintained transwarp conduit and expect to exit unscathed (with in reason)
