The Katana class Battle cruiser is StarFleet's next generation deep space tactical vessel, progressing from the Defiant and Prometheus classes. StarFleet R&D took what was learned from both these projects as well as integrating technology developed from Voyager's return. Like the Defiant and Prometheus the Katana is a test bed vessel and they are the forerunner to the Phoenix-class. They were specifically designed to showcase and test extreme warp capability, LowObservabilitySuite (mkI), MKI QIC/exomagnetic EPS, Polarizing Reactive hull armour, fully embedded nacelles, command suite and others. Crew levels have also optimized and are smaller then is traditional for a vessel of this size. Like the Prometheus the Katana is well equipped for all related mission profiles.
The saucer and engineering hull of the Katana has been completely merged, and with the nacelles fully embedded, reminiscent of the Bradbury and Magellan classes.

The Katana employs a remarkable first generation two-layer system to avoid detection. First, it uses several special low-power chronoton field emitters, essentially "poor man's cloaking devices", to mask the ship from sensors. At a passing glance, a sensor scan would go right over it. In the event that they manage to arouse some attention, the second system is brought online: a silicon-based biological compound on the hull that mimics the surrounding colors and lights with remarkable accuracy.

*these launchers are the latest Turret style which are capable of swiveling 15 degree's off axis giving them a wide field of fire. They capable of launching up to six torpedoes per second for up to two seconds, or launching twelve torpedoes simultaneously.

The Katana is one of the fastest vessels ever to be fielded by Star Fleet as of 2380's, and is capable of cruising at warp 9.0 and regularly travel's at warp 9.9. Her emergency burst speed is in the lower end transwarp realm. The latest advances in impulse engine design has also been utilized in the Katana, power out put has been raised by 12%, through the use of a anti-matter fuel additive. While the use of a fuel additive increases power out put significantly their use does increase engine maintenance requirements.
The QIC MkIex (experimental first generation Quantum Induction Core) is the size as the 11/q M/AM reactor but is rated at 2500+ Cochrane out put. Exomagnetic EPS have been installed.
With the modification to the Treaty of Algeron (Treaty amended after the Dominion war) all Perimeter Defense vessel's are now fitted with Federation developed stealth technology, with the LOS MkI being fitted to all of these vessels. Rather then fit a "standard" cloaking device Federation R&D decided to develop their own version of stealth technology. The LOS is smaller, uses less energy and achieves similar results as the Defiant's Cloaking device.
To augment the Katanas offensive punch 5 Attack Fighters are carried on-board, to be deployed as required. A small compliment of shuttles is also carried. The Talon-class scout serves as the ships Captains yacht.
The only criticism made about this vessel by crew (during the shake down cruise of the NX-Katana) is the barely adequate recreational facilities, which tends to only become relevant on extended missions. One solution has been forwarded, for vessels expected to go on extended missions they omit the vessels Tri-cobalt devices and expand the recreation facilities (taking the rating from 4 to 5).
