History:
ASTER: a diminutive or pejorative suffix denoting something that imperfectly resembles or mimics the true thing. A fitting name for a vessel that looks ALMOST like a Nova Class, but not quite.

The Aster Class vessel was an augmented design of the Nova Class, developed shortly after the beginning of the Dominion War. The first two ships were based off incomplete frames for un-assembled Nova Class ships. Before the ships could be completed the war had ended, though Starfleet still found use for the vessels in various border patrol and escort roles. A total of 10 ships had been contracted, and featured major upgrades to various systems.
