Icarus: The New/Old Voyages

Watched Enterprise with some of the players in the group last night (though we are currently on gaming hiatus till November, still socialize... :) )

After the show, we talked about plans for the upcoming game. Much to my surprise, they indicated they want to go back to the classic Trek era - a few months ago we had tried a few one-shot adventures aboard the Constitution-class U.S.S. Icarus, NCC-1071, during the 2260's. Apparently, those adventures were rather well received...

So it looks like there won't be a Sovereign-class Victory after all. But don't weep for me, we'll be playing in my favorite era. :cool:

So my campaign decision boils down to one big question. How do I want my Klingons, greasy or bumpy? :D

Go for greasy. The Enterprise Klingons might be bumpy, but Trials and Tribbleations pretty much acknowledged there was a difference. We do use the greasy Klingons (greasy, I gotta remember that :D) in our TOS era campaign.

But havng said that, there's no reason why you couldn't just ignore it and go with bumpy either. It's just a matter of preference I'd say. But to me, the greasy Klingons are part of the 'feel' of the era :D

Oh I agree, I was mainly being a little silly.

The actual real issue I'm mulling over is whether to set it in the TV show (greasy) or early film series (bumpy). The one-shots we played were in the TV show, so I'm leaning towards continuing it, though my players often laugh at my gaming moods being influenced by product consumption, and with the ST:TMP DVD and Refit Enterprise Deckplans coming out soon, it could be a dangerous time for me. :rolleyes:

Oh yeah. I always fancied running a game in the TMP period. In fact, my long term plan for our TOS game is to progress the characters through to that period. They're all pretty junior officers at the moment anyway, so it will be nice to move them along and up through the various stages of their career.

And those refit Enterprise deckplans almost make it a must.

My bunch are currently aboard a Saladin class ship (one of the Franz Josef single nacelle designs, I have the blueprints). But I am thinking of moving them up to Constitution class later (I have the original Enterprise deckplans as well).

Where did you hear about the refit connie plans coming out? They sound like a must. Then all I'll need is a full set of Intrepid class blueprints and I'll be happy.

TV era - I love those analog controls and counters...

I would love to play classic Trek, but except for one other player, all the other players perfer TNG trek.

I know someone who has been working on Intrepid plans. I've seen some rough work, very very nice, but I think they are on hold right now while he looks for funding...

How about including both? "Greasy" and "Bumpy" klingons both have their merits, may I recommend;

1. Bumpy for combat oriented ladz
2. Greasy for softer, more Shakesperian quoting honour ladz.

Intrepid deckplans.........drooollll. I hope your friend is successful in getting them made. I'd love to see them. I have been plannig to have a go at them myself for some time now, but it's such a huge project, and I have so little time, that I really haven't gotten very far. I'd love to see his work. I wish SOMEBODY would publish deckplans for that ship.

Now I know in the real world it a was a few years, but did anyone get the impression there were at least 5 to 10 years between TMP and TWOK?

I am doing and adventure where my players are going to find themselves in that time :)

The five year mission ended in 2269 and TMP took place in late 2271. I believe ST:II took place in 2284.

Of course if I do set a game on the refit Icarus, it does solve the bumpy issue, but it does introduce...

Pajamas or Napoleonic Uniforms? :D

But seriously, how about a mix - sort of a transition like in Generations where some crew wore the standard TNG uniforms while others wore the DS9 versions...

Definitely pajamas, an opportunity you can't pass up:D

That wasn't a transition. They were just different uniform styles. like the way the contemporary armed forces have different uniform styles to fit different siuations. Like class A and class B uniforms, or some such thing. The TNG uniform OUTLIVED the original DS9 style of uniform, so it couldn't have been a transition.

However, I like the idea of showing a mix of the old and new uniforms in a TOS/TMP campaign.
