Starfleet Branch Guides
Ok...I'll be the first to admit that my idea for the Breen sourcebook dissolved into the mists of obscurity. To be truthful, the Breen were a subject that, upon reflection, weren't all that interesting to me.
I've been thinking, however, about the idea of Starfleet branch guides, like the one for the Security branch originally proposed by LUG. I think that this is something that we, as players and narrators alike, could benefit from, and there's certainly a lot of material that could be covered, from pertinent NPC's of the various branches to historical characters (so as to be incorporated into a TOS campaign), different overlays for the core branches, training options, different development options, and so forth.
While this is something that I'd like to work on, I don't have the available time to "head up" a project like this, no matter how much I'd like to. Additionally, I worry that I would start something like this and then it would die from lack of interest halfway through (or sooner).
So, then, if there is anyone who'd like to take the organizational reins of this project, I'd be glad to assist in whatever way possible. Of course, there would have to be an initial interest in something like this.
Well, that's my pitch. Let's kick it around and see what we come up with, shall we?

I like this idea and would be happy to work on it, after my time is up on the Trill book... I certainly have some material to contribute...
But heres another idea... If we are producing a fan based document, why create several smaller books, why not just a single book, with each chapter covering a different department...

We were going to have an entire book devoted to security from LUG, so I imagine that the information out there is enough for a separate book for each branch.
By the way, if you ever agree to do an Engineering Officer Manual, call me! http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/smile.gif

Well, I don't know about the feasibility of producing an entire book about each branch (LUG might have been able to do it, but I for one ain't LUG!) http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/smile.gif
I had thought something along the line of several "mini-books", each a few chapters or so, covering the major branches, like tactical, security, command, operations, medical, sciences, engineering...just whatever people seemed interested in working on.

Believe me, we could easily gather 60 pages of information for each branch, and a LUG book would have had 96... so we're not that far away from them http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/smile.gif
-
Oh, I wouldn't doubt that we could put together 60 or so pages for each branch, when you figure in sections for character development, skills, advantages and disadvantages, NPC's, some location information, and so forth.
The problem I see is trying to get enough people to stay interested in working on such a project. I would suppose if we started off with one (like Command or Security, for example), we could see how things go.

So the three people responding to this topic are all from the same PBEM http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/smile.gif Maybe we should work this out between us...
Theres already some basic information on the Venture's web site...
Basic departmental descriptions
Starfleet Security Codes
etc...
And greg, your are playtesting my Strategic Operations Template...

Yet another project? Nooooo! http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/biggrin.gif
Maybe that would be good. We should post an off-topic on the Venture listserv to see if anyone's interested http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/wink.gif
By the way, this topic remembers me of giving some life to the old "Fan Projects links" topic... it should be around here.

How about three books one each Command, Operations, Science.
Or 1 BIG book with 3 major chapter/s (subgrouped by sub branch) on the above.
Hell ops itself could be an encyclopedia set with all its sub branches, science to boot.

Ok...this thread has started to fade into obscurity (hell, who am I kidding, I had to search to find it!), but recent talks with Dan Gurden have got me thinking about it again.
The way I see it, we could go two possible ways:
1) One sourcebook, with sections devoted to the major branches, or
2) Multiple, smaller sourcebooks, each of which could cover a branch, or a branch section (like Security or Engineering for Ops)
Either way, each has their positive and negative elements, and I have to say that I don't have a particular preference for either. Personally, I'd rather see the work start, and worry about the format at a (much) later date.
That being said, I would think that the first, logical (ah, the Vulcan in me shines through!) step for us would be to try to determine who would be interested in working on this project, and what each person would want, or be willing, to do. Also, we should try to determine what area, branch, or whatnot we want to tackle first.
I think that once we can get some ideas flowing, more elements will fall into place.
Finally, I had put this project on the back-burner because of semester finals, as well as personal issues concerning school. However, I'm now in a position to give this project more attention than I could have otherwise...
So, then, let's see what we can come up with, shall we? http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/smile.gif

Ok, this initially started off as an entirely different message, but I've basically completely re-worked it, following a new idea that I had.
To me, producing a series of sourcebooks just about each branch seemed, well, a little boring, IMHO. To that end, I propose something else...a Player's Guide to Starfleet! Granted, our fine friends at LUG have provided us information about Starfleet, but I really feel that it can be greatly expanded, and that Starfleet, as much as anything (if not more so) deserves its own sourcebook.
If anyone is interested in working on this project, drop by the site and sign up! The address is:

Hopefully, we can get this whole thing rolling sometime soon!

I would be more than happy to help. I'm not exactly a word and grammar wizard but I do have 6 years of military experience in the USMC if current military doctrine, branch and MOS descriptions would help.
-
I would be willing to help with my current knowledge of US Navy of just over 10 yrs. I think that knowledge could help as well as any traditional aspects.

I certainly appreciate everyone's enthusiasm concerning this project.
If those that read this thread would be kind enough to check out the Starfleet Player's Guide Thread http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/For...ML/000799.html I'm going to post another update, which will include the overall goal of the sourcebook, as well as a few other tidbits.
Thanks!
Greg

I have run out of time, and would like this thread marked as "new" when I come back. Sorry to waste everyone's time. http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/smile.gif
