From what I can tell, the Dominion War last from early 2374 to mid 2375...can anyone confirm, deny or clarify this please?
Seems like an awfully short war...thought it lasted like 2 or 3 seasons on the show.

I belive it began in late 2373 - the season finale of DS9 Season 5.
It ended somewhere towards the end of 2375 (DS9 Season 7). I read somewhere on the internet that while no date is given, somewhere in the treaty room you can make out a stardate which corresponds to November 11, 2375. (i.e. Armistice Day, Veterans' Day, end of WWI.) No idea if its true, but it sounds neat. :)
Very interesting
I would love to confirm that date...seems neat :)
Thanks for the info...I appreciate it greatly :)
The last DS9 episode to include a stardate was "Extreme Measures" which has a stardate of 52645.7 (according to the stardate calculator speadsheet found in the computer core section here, that is August 24, 2375). So "What You Leave Behind" is sometime beyond that (Armistice Day as Dan says would be somewhere between stardates 52860.8 and 52863.5.
It depends on exactly when you consider the war to have started. A case could be made that the war started in 2370 with the destruction of the Odyssey ("The Jem Hadar"), though it became a "hot" war with "Call to Arms" (set in 2373) and ended sometime in 2375 ("What you Leave Behind"). The general assumption made by the production staff was 1 season roughly equaled one year.
So the answer is 2-5 years, approximately, depending on the start date you use.
IMHO the Dominion War followed this pattern:
2370 to 2371 the initial period with no actual fighting but with both sides jockeying for position before the actual fighting starts. Alliances are formed and broken and the Founders position their agents to destabalise the Alpha Quadrant superpowers.
2372 - 2373: The war breaks out with the Klingon intervention. The fall of DS9 in 2373 spells the beginning of total war.
2374: The early war with the Federation and Klingons on the defensive on all fronts. DS9 is recaptured.
2375: The last year of the war culminating on the allied assualt to liberate Cardassian Prime.
So while there was 2 or 3 years of total war, the war itself lasted for a full 5 years.
Yes it was a relatively short war but it was the most intense military conflict fought by the Federation. The Romulan War which may have been worst pre-dated the Federation and the Klingon War was more a Cold War with occassionaly skirmishes than a full blown war on all fronts which ate ships and manpower forcing all the powers to go to full war production to sustain a war effort which ends with half of Starfleet destroyed and the remainder hardly fit for serivce. The Klingons and Romulans fair no better and the Cardassians were almost wiped out.
Sometimes its not how long the war, but the tempo of the war that counts. The Dominion War was fought at maximum operational tempos which resulted in the record losses in ships, manpower and materiel than all previous wars.
The Dominion War is one of those war which could have started depending on your persepective. A Cardassian would have viewed it as starting in 2372 with the Klingon invasion as would the Klingons themselves. The Feds as starting in 2373, the Romulans in 2374.
Now what follows is my own interpretaion of various source material and canon as regards other federation wars
The Romulan War 2155-61 was not a Federation war but an Earth one perhaps fought by units of starfleet but not a "true" war of the Federation dispite it's obvious importance to its founding.
There then followed a long period of quisi-wars with various powers such as the Orions and maybe even the Klingons. This period was ended with the outbreak of open hostilities with the Klingons around 2223.
The 1st Klingon War or Nine Years War (2223-2232) was a sporadic war fought mainly over the BETRIDAN (BETgeliuse, RIgil and CoriDAN) trade routes (See LUG map in Star Trek Core Rule book). Forces involved were light and concern mainly with defending trade on the Feds border.
The 2nd Klingon War or Four Years War (2239-2243) largest and most bloddy conflict of the 23rd century, fought over both the issue of Axanar, various border disputes and trade. The war was fought on both surface and in space. This is the war which truely made the long simmering hatred between the two powers come to the surface.
The years following the four years war saw various small scale conflicts from Colony Intervention to fighting proxy powers. These included:
The Axanar Crisis (2354-2255) fought with small scale space and some ground conflict this engagement is now relatively forgotten by the Federation
The Chuunkun war (2255-2256) as the Federation expanded it was bond to encounter less than friendly parties this happen here when they encountered a proxy cliant power of the Tholians after several colonies were attacked Starfleet responded in force.
The Quisi War with the Romulans (2265-2266) The action depicted in "Balance of Terror" was actually the end of the war which was fought mainly against Orions pirates who were acting as the Romulans surrogates
3rd Klingon War or Short War (2267) Started over the world of Organia but was cut short by the Organians themselves.
The years following the Organian treaty were more peaceful then at any other time for the federation outside of occiasional skirmishes with the Breen in 2281 and others, the largest point of conflict was the Tai-Pan offensive against the Klingons in 2387-89 also known as the 4th Klingon War or Two-Years War.
After Khitomer the Federation entered the "long Peace" the Tomed incident not with standing the Federation managed to avoid active hostilies from 2293 until the outbreak of the Cardassian War in 2347.
Cardassian War (2347-2355) fought mainly over defense of colonies this was the first major conflict to require large numbers of ground forces since the Four Years War over one hundred years before. Though the war is dated between 2347and 2355 it actually lasted until 2370 when a peace treaty was signed ending it.
Tholian War (2350-2360) though the Chuukun war had brought the two into war they had not opennly faced onanother until this spordic and small scale-conflict.
Tzenkethi War (2359-2364) another of a now long line of colonial defensive wars.
Borg Conflict (2367-Present) still considered as an open conflict by Starfleet and the Federation.
5th Klingon War or 6 Months War, (2372) this short Dominion engineered conflict reopen many long thought dead wounds between both powers. Its final effects have yet to be seen on further relations.
Dominion War (2373-2376)
Wasn't there a conflict with the Talarians somewhere around the 2350s?
I seem to remember a TNG episode where a young human boy had been adopted by Talarians after his parents were KIA during a conflict with them.
I had thought about the Talarians and didn't know where to palce them now with this piece of information I might be able too. Does anyone else know any dates and or events related to the Talarians?
The Stardate for "Call To Arms" starting the war which ended Season Five of DS9 was 50975.2 which (according to the calculator found at this site; http://steve.pugh.net/fleet/stardate.html) translates to December 22nd 2373. As mentioned by others this marks the Federation involvement in hostilities against the Dominion whereas the Maquis and the Klingons were fighting them months earlier.
There was no "end" date given in the finale but the previous episode "The Dogs of War" mentions Stardate 52861.3 or roughly tranlated indeed as
November 11, 2375 (as menioned in the previous posts) but undoubtedly "What You Leave Behind" occurs shortly after this date so the war probably ended mid to late November 2375.
The DS9 Avatar novels which occur after the war
start with "2376...Three Months Later" after having a timeline up to late 2375 in the opening pages.
Stardates mentioned Season Six (Year 2374)
"Behind The Lines"-- Feb. 24, 2374.
(Which means Sacrifice of Angels occurs in March)
"You Are Cordially Invited"-- Apr. 1, 2374.
(Worf and Dax get married on April Fools)
"Waltz"-- May 30, 2374.
(Dukat escapes)
"Change of Heart"--Aug. 6, 2374.
(Worf chooses to save Dax then complete his mission to rescue a Cardie informant.)
"In The Pale Moonlight"-- Sept. 21, 2374.
(The Romulans are duped into an alliance against the Dominion... ;) )
"Valiant"-- Oct. 24, 2374.
(Those Red Squad brats never should have been on a Defiant class in the first place!)
"Sound of Her Voice"--Dec. 13, 2374.
(Episode before Season 6 finale.)
Stardates mentioned Season Seven (Year 2375)
"Shadows and Symbols"--Feb 25, 2375
(Sisko finds his orb on Tyree, Worf and Martok destroy the Dominion shipyards at Monac III.)
"Penumbra"--Jul. 30, 2375
(Weyoun orders Damar to send reinforements to a Son'a facility that is in danger of being attacked
by the Federation. Dukat alters himself to appear as Bajoran. Ezri and Worf are captured by the Breen.)
"Extreme Measures"--Aug. 24, 2375
(Bashir lures Section 31 director Sloan to DS9 to extract information to cure the disease inflicting Odo.)
"Dogs of War"--Nov. 11, 2375
(Sisko and crew are assigned to the USS Sao Paulo which is granted special dispensation to revert the name to USS Defiant. Rom is chosen by Grand Nagus Zek as his successor. The Cardassian resistance is crushed by the Dominion but Kira and Damar plan to rally the civilian populace to initiate an uprising. The Federation, Klingon and Romulan empires agree to launch a final assault on Cardassia to end the war.)
I recall that it was called the Galen Border Conflict(s) - the Talarians thought that the UFP was getting to close so they attacked the main colony in the area, which (I believe) was called Galen.Quote:

Boy the federation seemed to skip the course on Earth History 1600-1900 and injust the lesson on establishing your colonies too close to another powers border.
Federation point of veiw:
"Never mind the locals were only here for peaceful purposes, they'll see that by our prosperous colony replete with peaceful industrial and our high standard of living"
Neighbors point of view:
Look at these people they populate like wild fire building colonies on worlds which we had hoped to cliam as our own. Their factories are capable of prodiucing military might and did they even as much to think to ask our opinion, NO!"
