Description and Notes
The Griffon-class troop transport/landing craft was designed specificaly for use with the Aeneas-class. Two Griffon-class ships fit into the “drop-bays” of an Aeneas and can be accessed from a dorsal hatch and the aft door while docked with the larger ship.
The Griffon-class is built around a triangular lifting body shape with a large “hump” on the forward half of the dorsal side. This hump contains the cockpit and a small medical facility. The main deck of the Griffon holds a spacious room at the aft end, with a large door allowing for rapid troop egress. Set into the walls of this large staging area are bunk-style beds and fold-out chairs and tables, to form a mess hall when the Griffon sets down on a planet for prolonged periods of time. Forward of this staging area is a more comfortable quarter for two and and a crago hold below the cockpit.
Standard mission parameters call for the Griffon to deliver it's carried troops to the front lines and then retreat from the front to serve as a communications relay, first-aid station and command post for the GF troops.
A lot of Griffon pilots use the ventral phaser array of the craft to “dig” a hole to set the ship down in, for concealement and added protection. This has become something of an unofficial standard procedure.
During the Dominion War those Griffons still in use at the time were upgraded as much as possible, some with stronger weapons and others with ablative armor on the ventral side of the craft for added protection during starts and landings, but the capacity of the design for modifications proved limited in this day and age of extended planetary conflicts.
