Do you SETI?

A general query to the group since Trek is about seeking out "seeking out new life & new civilizations", how many of you have the SETI@Home client running in the background.

I'm quickly approaching 250 units (211 actually) :)

Anyone else?

I have done on a number of occasions but not currently :(

I'm working on my 147 one now. I even started my own group for my RPG board. Although I'm still the only member so......

finally hit 250 this afternoon. Wouldn't have taken this long if I hadn't been on the road so much, but oh well! :)

Nope. Don't like having someone else using my machine remotely. Must be the holdover from the intel work.

I understand the basic premise of SETI, but how do I do it on my computer?

As I understand it, SETI is a private (or is it public?) program/organization searching for intelligent life in our universe. While I don't know the finer points, the search process includes processing large amounts of data using private PC's (like your's and mine). Do I have the right picture?

Anyway, how do I set my computer up to SETI?

I just started a few weeks ago. Only 2 units completed, but I'll catch up soon! Gotta find those aliens - I'm waiting for the mother ship to take me home! :p

E W Dawson, here is the link. It's a screensaver, and processes the data when your computer is idle. Or you can set it to process in the background all the time, but that might slow down your computer.

Thanks for the link, LizardQueen. I visited the site and read some of the info as well as down load the screensaver. It is all very interesting.

I only briefly reviewed the user agreement, but if this thing is a legitimate higher education endeaveor (Berkeley support), I wonder why more universities don't participate? Or maybe they already participate? I could not help but wonder what kind of potential processing power the hundreds of computers in my schools 3 or 4 computer labs, though. Maybe I should study up on this project and propse it to my school.

But My comp is @ home . . . and I am now in the military, but it still runs and sends data in . . . so I don't know how much more I've done.

Hey! You guys have inspired me!

I have run S@H in the past, but not for the last year or so. I'm downloading 3.07 as we speak, to see if I can start boosting up my current 50 units.

The only other thing I want them to do is guarantee that if I find THE signal, I get to be on the "First Contact Team"! :)
