New poll in my "What did you think of the latest ENT episode" series!
I thought it was a nice break from the usual "Prison Planet" scenario, but the basis in the internment camps of World War II was just a little two obvious for my tastes. Otherwise, it was an amazing episode. Great acting by whoever it was who played the lead Suliban.
Thought it had a nice Israel-Palestine kinda feel. Overall, it was solid.
I liked Reed in the Suliban makeup.
I also enjoyed the episode. I agree that it was a fairly obvious parallel - I'd picked up on it even before it was explicitly mentioned in the episode, and I'm not particularly knowledgeable about history. But hey - it's no more obvious than the Planet of the Nazis in TOS! :D
I found "Detained" to be a much better episode than most have been so far. Sure, the parallel to the internment camps (which were even mentioned) wasn't subtle, but a lot of the time, Star Trek hasn't tried to be particularly subtle in its messages. That goes all the way back to "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield" and others from the original series.
It also served to advance the "Temporal Cold War" arc without actually involving any time travellers, by giving us from facts (?) from the perspective of the Suliban. We already knew that many weren't in the Cabal, but we now know there are a number of them who are actively bitter about the Cabal. And even those actually in the Cabal may have joined to escape what they considered an intolerable situation (which explains without excusing).
I was expecting Dean Stockwell's "Colonel Grat" to be a one dimensional villain, and was pleasantly surprised to see hints of complexity. I hope this character appears again at some point -- but also hope he's not overused. From him, we got a sense of how things can start out with good intentions (or at least, not entirely bad intentions), and quickly spiral downhill.
All in all, I'd have to say this is my favority episode so far.
I'd like to know : were there any Code Quantum references ? :D
The first half of this episode was, IMO, some of the most boring TV I've ever tried to pay attention to. The second half was a little more interesting, but still failed to make me care about any of the characters or issues. Overall, this one seemed dull, predictable, obvious, and preachy. (To be fair, I missed a few minutes from the first half of the show when UPN accidentally started to air the intro to DS9's Civil Defense instead of the next act of Detained. Maybe I missed a key scene that made a big difference. Still, I don't care enough to watch it again in reruns to see what I missed.)
