Okay so I am making my character, trying to learn the rules, reading each section as I go.
I get to profession.
How many skills do I get? There is a list but it doesn't say how many points (or picks) I get. Should I ignore this and go stright to packages?
Can anyone create a character craetion tutorial? Please?
I really can't seem to figure it out on my own, usually I read the one or two page "Example of character creation", but I can't seem to find one in this book. Maybe I am just dense. :(
Okay so I am trying to piece this together.
Here is what I have so far, no advancements, just basics.
Please tell me if I am on the right track.
First off I came up with an idea. I choose an Old School Captain. I figure this guy is just around 70. He has come through the Dominion War and is ready to hang up his hat. But given Starfleet has taken such hits during the war, he is convinced to stay on and bolster the fleet awhile longer. I'll name him Percy Elias Collas (Percy for my train worker late Uncle, and Elias for my late grandfather, his father. Collas is their family name, my mother's side).
Next I choose my species. Human.
For species abilities I get;
Adaptable, The Human Spirit and Skilled (still haven't spent those points by the end of this post)
Next I take my Species Skills
Culture (Human) 3
History (Federation) 3
Politics (Fedeartion) 3
Religion (Human) 3
Unidentified Colony World 3
Lang: Federation Standard 3
For stats I use the pics and with mods get...
Str: 6
Agi: 8
Int: 9
Vit: 6
Pre: 12
Per: 7
Not exaclty sure about the preferred stat thing yet.
Next up my Personal Developmentl I choose Colony Upbringing which gives me...
Survival 2
Athletics 1
Gaming 1
Repair 1
and the Edge Unyeilding.
Next for my Profession I take Starship Officer which gives me Starship Duty
My Elite Profession will be Command Officer, which gives me Commanding Presence
For my Professional Development I choose Basic Commander, which gives me...
Administration 2
Computer Use (Retrive) 2
Energy Weapons 2
Trivia (Space Battles) 3
Negotiate 1
Repair 1
System Operations (Command) 2
Tactics (Space) 3
Boxing 2
Survival 1
Inquire 1

My edge is Command 1
So at this point my skills are;

Yes. If I'm understand the rules correctly.
You need to spend the +2 skill levels for being human. You also get two Level 1 Tier skills (Starship Duty and one other for being in the Command Section)
Under each Profession description they list which stat is your favored stat (for Dr. it's your Intelliect). A humans prefered reaction would be whatever he spent his extra 2pts in (Stamina, Quickness or Willpower).
Now all you have to do is decide how many advancments he's had in his lifetime up until he was 70. Discussed in the book is 1/year for normal time, 1/6 months for combat duty or 1/2 years for "civilian life" though if the guy has been in starfleet for 40-50 odd years (well 70-20something) I doubt he'd need 200-250 pts.

Well if he joined when he was 18, graduated the Academy and stuff at 22, is now 70, he has served for 48 years. Now I would use the 1 per year system for this, since it is pretty much all background, but even then 48 advancements are a heck of a lot.Quote:

I think you picked too many edges.
As far as I understand it (and the archetypes seem to support my theory) you only get one edge. Either during Personal Development or during Professional Development. Not both.
And shouldn't you pick attributes before picking species skills? After all the number of species skill picks is determined by your INT attribute x 2?
To take the edge from the professional development package requires that a flaw be chosen.
Aslan: If you follow the steps on pages 20-21, it walks you through the creation process. Also, the Human psecies ability Adaptable gives you +2 to one reaction.
Joe: You can get more than one Edge during character creation. But if they aren't from species abilities, you have to have a coresponding Flaw for each Edge beyond the first.
deltabob: That's not quite true. If you choose not to take an Edge in your Personal Development package (or take one, but also take a Flaw), then you can take your free Edge during Professional Development.
I don't have my book with me to check this right now, can you opt not to take an entire development package, for example, leaving out the edge? If you can choose not to take the edge listed, could you also choose not to take other portions of the package (such as specific skills or specializations)?
Sense we're talking edges and flaws I guess I'll ask something that I'm not sure about. During the creation, if a player takes a flaw with an edge can it be any edge/flaw combo in the book or can the edge just come from the package you picked?
In other words, my sample character is designed as a Starfleet Tactical office. I want to give him the edge of ambidextrous but neither his personal (Diplomats Child) nor his professional (Tactical Office) packages offer ambidextrous as an edge.

Edges & Flaws: Okay I get it now...makes sense.
Re Character Creation as a Whole: It works fine now that I "get it" but I must say that it could have been made a whole lot clearer. The msot common complaint I have heard from people is that there is way too much flipping back and forth. Second most, things are not presented clearly. ICON (and most, not all, other games) have a linear character creation method. Go to step B from Step A. Here it has one, but then the subparts seem to be mixed one to the other.
I guess this is a whole new beast for CC and it requires breaking the previous CC training. A bold step to be sure, but also a slightly confusing one that needed just a bit of hand holding, IMHO.
Okay so now I will apply picks and adjust based on what has been disscussed... later... now I need to do something, anything else :)

At the same time you select your Personal and Professional Development, you also need to select species skills. You get a number of picks equal to your INT x 2 (a 10 INT will give you 20 picks). Each pick can be used for a level in a skill related directly to the culture and world you were raised on. Specialties are free.
If I'm wrong, please tell me.
Yes and no. You are entitled to so many picks during each development stage. If you want to substitute something, go ahead. In fact, each stage even has a "Create Your Own" package that tells you how many picks you get of each item. :)Quote:

Let me put it this way. The Development Packages are guidelines. They are not set in stone. If you want a Command Officer with the Stealth skill, subtitute it for one of his other skills. If you want to take Ambidextrous (with or without selecting a Flaw) you can.Quote:
