Starship officer?

In the errata thread the following was posted:

Q: Can a character ever select/purchase a second base profession?
A: No. A character only has one base profession. Characters may purchase as many Elite Professions as they qualify for, as per the rules.

How does a soldier like Kira ever become a Starship Officer, since she can't take Starship Duty (even with Innovative), can't take another base class to get it, and can't qualify for the Starship elite classes without it?

Or did she never become a sharship officer, just paying double for all her starship-related skills the whole time?

She never gained the Starship Officer base profession, but to qualify for the Starship Officer EPs all she had to do was meet the prerequisites (other than the Starship Duty professional ability). It has been noted elsewhere that the Prereqs sections for these EP should have "OR" between Starship Duty and the rest of the prereqs. So, no prob for Kira.

Or simply allow her to have it in your game or allow players to change base professions.

OK... so a PC needs the Starship Duty OR the other prereqs.

Does this apply to other elite professions as well?

I'll go back and read the errata to see if any of the typo stuff mentions it.

Nope. The only elite professions that Starship Duty gives access to are those listed under the Starship Officer profession. :)

What I mean is: are there other elite professions that require feats OR prerequisites, but are shown as requiring both?

I just skimmed through all of the non Starship elite professions, and none of them require professional abilities. Also, none of them have an alternate ability that would exempt a character from the other prerequisites of that elite profession.

All of them, however, do require an edge or flaw (I'm guessing that the "notoriety trait" requirement for Assassin is supposed to be "Infamy"?), as well as certain skills and/or minimum Reactions.

No, there are no missing "or"s from the elite professions in the Advancement chapter. :)
