Captain, Senior Counselor, Chief Flight Controller, Security Chief, and Chief Engineer.
Ship's CO, Flight Control Officer, Chief Science Officer, Chief Medical Officer, and a soldier on board as an observer.
USS Lexington: Captain, Chief of Conn, Chief of Tactical, Chief Engineer, Chief of Ops, Counselor.
Deep Space Station 45: Station Commander, Chief of Security, Civilian Doctor, Torch Singer/FSC Agent, Ferengi Merchant, Klingon BOP Commander.
Medical, Science, Security. All of them Department head.
Pretty much 'all of the above'. But the Venture is a big game, as you know.
Hmm we have most of them. Notably we don't have any medics of Counselor PCs (though we've had both in the past). Of course, therse are all spread across two Starfleet campaigns (one 23rd century, one 24th) and one 23rd century civilian merchant/adventurer campaign.
No Civies! We play Starfleet and nothing but, since, IMHO, that's the main if not only reason to play Star Trek. Wanna be a mystic - go be a Jedi. Wanna be a merchant or merc - go play Traveller. Only one game has Starfleet! :p
My players have played everything from Starship captains to Federation Ambassadors. Mostly we play the bridge command crew, Captain, First Officer, Dept. Chiefs, etc.

I prefer to play one of the following: Science, Medical, Civilian, Non-fleet, other (enlisted).
We have a "standard spread" that way. One Flight Control, one Science, one Medical, one Command, and one Security.
But there is talk of everyone making a second character...
Science, Medical, Command and Engineer being the most favored by all. Very few command, flight or security officers in the bunch.
I run my game in a more troupe style -- I started them off as just playing one character, a cadet, but as we have gone along and time has passed I have made them take on secondary and even tertiary characters that are regularly occuring minor characters and lower decks types.
Player 1: The Captain, a C1C Science Tech, a C2C Security Crewman and a Lt Helmsman on another ship in thier fleet group.
Player 2: Chief of Security a C3C Science crewman
Player 3: Chief Science Officer and Chief Petty Officer Paramedic
Player 4: Chief of Engineering and PO2 Captain's Yeoman
Player 5: Chief Tactical Officer and PO2 Security Crewman
Player 6: Chief of Operations and a C2C security crewman.
This is on top of the regular handing out of one shot characters I give them for an particular adventure since I already have to run the majority of the other crew NPCs, most of whom are sheeted... yikes.
One point I find interesting from this exercise.
Despite the positions available in DecTrek, most people still play Starfleet (or equivalent) starship officers.
As had been prevoiusly said. I think this has more to do with Genre. After all over 90% of screen time is devoted to Starfleet types. And better universes are available to play rebels and freedom fighters (Star Wars) and Traders (Traveller)...Quote:

Sure the options are there, but thats to suit the vocal minority who have pointed out how the options were previously unavailable. And those that just fancied a change or something different.
Makes you think.
