Neelix is a Racially Insensitive @$(-hole

... which is what I think the reason that Tuvok was always annoyed with him. I mean, he kept calling him "Mr. Vulcan"! I know Vulcans have control over their emotions, but everyone has their breaking point.

Here are normal lines on Voyager during the "downtimes", when Neelix doesn't have to force himself to be politically correct for the viewers...

"Sorry Mr. Vulcan, but pointy eared fellows don't eat at this lunch line."

"Ah Tuvok, did you hear about the Mexican guy, the Chinese guy, and the Vulcan guy?"

"Mr. Vulcan, I have specifically asked you many times to stop using that replicator booth. The Vulcanoid-only one is on the other side of the mess hall."

But I think most of it was Neelix's way of getting Tuvok to 'open up/communicate readily' to himself in particular and everyone in general.

However (and while Neelix wasn't to knowthis at first), if Tuvok was a Vulcan of a decent salt, then it really didn't matter what Neelix called him... After all the emotional control and inherant Vulcan calm would bury any response to this...

But you are right, it would be a little bit like having a Redneck on Kirks crew using offensive derrogatory slang at Sulu, Chekov and Uhura. At least thats the direct equivalent for what was said.

HOWEVER; the real secret is in;
a - the tone of voice, and characters body language... Which was always open and friendly, thus reavealing that Neelix wasn't trying to be insensitive but instead to be friendly.

and
b - the charater realtionship which slowly grew closer and even friendly/respectful.

Which puts the initial slurs down to ignorance.

Did you ever consider the idea that Neelix had more than likely never met a Vulcan before?

Calling Neelix a racist...c'mon now...lighten up a bit.

Oh, and by the way, the only bad thing about Neelix's departure from the series was the timing.

Rather than the 2nd last episode of the last season, it should have been the 2nd episode of the first - I might have enjoyed Voyager immensely more if that had happened.
