Problems with my Species Pics

We are dressing up some of our ST:RPG information we have from non-Core Book sources (TrekRPGNet for example!) and decided to add pics to some of the species templates. We figure this would be a big help as some of the species we have stats for are not that well know (several from ST:TMP come to mind).

We have found pics of most species, but they are so small when viewed they are worthless. If we resize the image in the text it blurs so bad that you can't even tell it was a picture.

Now a guy in a chat room said the pics could be re-sized and would look perfect, as if that were the size I saved them in. However he had no idea how to do it. . .just said he knows someone who does it all the time.

Can I resize them so they will look at least half-way decent. And can anyone here tell me how to do it?

I'm not sure exactly how to do what you ask, but if you're talking about resizing ordinary images while retaining their sharpness, I believe it is impossible.

The only kind of graphics I know that you can resize without compromising image quality are vector graphics, if that's any help. They define an image's properties through mathematical calculations and ratios (so I believe), so you can make your image as large or as small as you want.

Hope that's of *some* use to you, but if there's another way of enhancing ordinary images, I'd love to hear it myself.

are you talking about making smaller picture bigger? If so, its a lost cause.

But as a whole your original query doesn't make much sense. the only problems with resizing graphics I found is when the pics are small and need to be bigger. Not much you can do in that situation except get a bigger source picture.

Anything else is less of a problem, embeddig images or making larger picture smaller. On the whole you will likely need a grahics program to ensure quality, and with that, you may even be able to adjust the loss of clarity with 'blown up' pictures.

You might also want to say what pictures you are looking for to see if a larger version is available with minimal work...

You could give them to Colin Powell to show to the UN Security Council, as proof of Iraqi non-compliance with the inspections... :D :D :D (Kidding! Only kidding! And taking the opposite side of that discussion from what I normally do)

I was afraid it wasn't possible. I have been playing around with the pics a few days now and cant find anyway to make them larger and retain the sharp image.

Being as it's Geocities, you could always try e-mailing the owner of the page & asking them if they've got larger versions of the pics.

Sorry. Wasn't sure if you read that bit. I know I have a tonne of picture files, and while I may not have what you need, I am fairly sure that either someone else has something or, i dunno, say the entire Star trek Fact Files and a scanner might be able to help?

Try the Daystrom Institute. They have larger images of many species there. The images are mostly caps, and vary in quality. However, you might find something to your liking.
