A Voyager-Like concept

A game idea just hit me. Having a ship lost in the "Mirror Universe" rather then across the galaxy. With some severe tweaking of the communications systems the ship could contact Star Fleet Command, but the ship would be stuck in a hostile environment for some time. Even if the crew did come up with one of those transporter devices that can send them back, it would still leave the ship there (not something you'd want the Alliance getting their hands on). This could also be used to determine just how dangerous the current mirror governments are to the safety of the normal governments, if SFC decided so.
Personally I wouldn't have a standard Federation ship doing this, I'd go with one of the more combat oriented ships (the 5 First Contact types) just as a point of survival.

Well as I said, this is just a spur of the moment idea that hit me. Let me know what you folks think.

Not a bad idea. You'd have to find a plausible way for ship's communications to break through the dimensional barrier so that they can have contact with their own universe...and the PCs would have to remember to include modifications to their systems in their communications, so that SFC can talk back to them.

It would work well for a Nebula-class and Akira-class, certainly. Defiant-class is too small for extended missions like this, as would be the Sabre-class and Steamrunner-class. Thing is, a campaign like this would eventually become 'Star Wars'. Remember both sides know of the Primary Universe, and the charactes are likely to have a preference for the Terran Rebels...

I ran a game like this a while back, but it failed miserably as players got offended by other players extremes...

But then the crew it was run for was split down the middle on their opposing selves.

Bajorans and Betazoids are the bad guys, working with the Klingon/Cardassian alliance. The rest were humans.

Where I went wrong, was to allow the players to play their alternate selves too, and that is where offence was taken. The image of a naked Bajoran wearng nothing but a leather SS officers cap and whipping slaves to perform obsene acts for his amusement will, unfortunatly, feature greatly in my list of DONTS for things to say in a RP session.

The only problem i see with a MU Voyager is that there's transporter tech that allows transport between the two universes.

So let's say you can get maybe like 4-5 episodes before it's a stretch to tell the players they can't find one/build one.

At that point you just transfer everyone back to the normal universe and auto-destruct the ship.

Bob, I don't think that would work. First- Empirically, the dimensional transporters don't appear to move people very far. Only to the mirror pad, essentially you haven't left the location you were just at. Second- A top of the line/newer class Federation starship wouldn't even exist in the mirror universe, the Federation would never of had built them. Basically you'll need to recreate the incident that brought you ship here in the first place, if you know exactly when and where it happened. I might suggest reading the book Dark Mirror for ideas, the crew of the E-D had no idea that the ship had crossed that threshold, it still looked the same.

Incorrect...

At first at least, you were correct, with Smiley O'Brien transporting himself and Sisko to his ship parked in the location of DS9 in the Primary universe.

But all the later shows had the transports from DS9 at the mouth of the wormhole, to the Mirror Terok Nor in orbit of Bajor. Now while I am sure this was simply lazy writing (hell until you mentioned it, I didn't even give it a second thought), but that is a very big gap, far beyond the range of standard transporters...

Well, maybe it's less the exact location that matters and more the object equivalence kindof thing. Like, from DS9, you can transport to and from Terok Nor (and its immediate vicinity) because both objects are images of each other, hence they are linked together somehow (treknobabble anyone?). As far as I recall, most if not all transports that happened in the series fit into this category: enterprise / mirror enterprise, DS9 / Terok Nor, and so on.

Back to the topic at hand, I can hardly imagine Starfleet officers wanting to auto-destruct a ship if there was even the slightest chance to bring her back home. Specially if it's a brand new ship full of state of the art or even experimental Starfleet technology. The fact is that even a somewhat older ship is usually worth a fortune, that you would not want to vaporize if not entirely necessary. Besides, there is always a sentimental relation between a ship and her crew (just look at the series)...

We've seen captain in the series order a self-destruct in less dire situations.

Granted, i can take it that the crew would try and look for a way out with the entire ship for a while..

But given time, i'm sure most captains would take a decision that employs surely saving the crew and losing a ship over looking for a way to bring back the ship, a way that might not exist.
