On Mind Melds and Empaths...

In Unimatrix Zero...

...Tuvok used a version of Mind-Meld to join Janeway and Seven, thus allowing Janeway to enter Unimatrix Zero. I am fairly certain he gave it a name. Can anybody please remember what this rituals/powers name was?

In Nemesis...

... Troi used her Psychic connection to the Reman chancellor to locate and target him. I am fairly certain that she just did this with no name for the power but cannot be 100% certain as I was laughing too hard. Can someone confirm? Does the novelisation bear any clues?

Lastly, anyone remember the whole "My Mind to Your Mind..." Speech?

"My mind to your mind, my thoughts to your thoughts." From there, I don't think there was a lot of consistency in the line...sometimes, Spock and the other melder would recite their names, like "We are Spock, we are..."

Other times (like with the Horta from "Devil in the Dark," if I recall the scene and the ep name correctly), Spock simply gave voice to the other's thoughts, allowing Kirk, et al, to converse with the creature.

In other instances, I don't think there was any speech at all until the melders began to share thoughts and speak them aloud.

In Star Trek III, the scene with Sarek was entirely different. "Kirk, I must have your thoughts."

Once they began the mind meld, Sarek began to confirm things that he saw in Kirk's mind.

"You spoke of your friendship."

"Yes..."

"He told you not to grieve."

"Yes..."

Then, his voice began to take on his son's qualities.

"I haven't been, and always shall be, your friend."

"no...."

(cue Vulcan mystical music :) )

In Trek VI, where Spock melded with Valeris to gain information, there was no "intro," so to speak. He simply entered her mind and began to search (the novelization had a nice description of what was going on within) for the information, and both participants recited the names. It was also evident that Valeris' fear and pain (?) as he searched for the location of the conference was shared by Spock (his voice cracked as he informed Kirk that "She does not know").

Of course, this is all just off the top of my head...I'd have to review the eps and movies in question to be certain.

All I remember was Troi mentioning the Scimitar might not be as hidden as everyone thought...cue weirdness scene...last line (to the Reman guy) "it works both ways!"

As mentioned by Sea Tyger, there really does not seem to be a 'speach' or somantic requirment to mind melds. Just a personal and dramatic choice.

Alright, need any other help. I've done some additional effects for aliens, based off existing effects.

I agree to the mind meld ritual. I think its just words, like sometimes used for meditation to make it easier for both partners.

But I think it was quite well shown in the Enterprise episode with the rogue Vulcans.

I believe Tuvok called it a "Bridging of Minds." But that particular ritual was something different I believe, because Tuvok melded with both Janeway and one other person; can't remember who.

It seemed to me what Troi managed to do was some sort of psionic radar : apparently, establishing a psychic contact with someone allows to locate this person. Not this far-fetched since after all we've seen Troi being able to focus on a specific person sometimes, so this would be the exact opposite (since she already knew the mind of the ViceRoy well after his mindrape).

In game terms, this could be done with a successful Telepathy or Empathy test, or maybe as a specialisation of one of these skills.

I think we all agree with the fact that the Mind Meld Mantra is pretty open to interpretation. Basically i have told players that it is a way to pace ones self so not to cause discomfort in the process.

Sarek is just psychically well endowed enough to be able to do such simple things without effort apparently.

Like troi said, "It works both ways." One interpretation of that is that the Reman opened a door to her mind that both could work through, he simply underestimated her will and psionic ability. This would mean that it wasn't Troi that was really doing anything except using the link that the Reman created.

as for the Voyager stuff? Never really watched it so I know I missed the ep. Sorry, but i hope that helps.

'Bridging of Minds' is what I already had. I suppose I will need a Vulcan name for it as it will be linked in with Katra, Fal-Tor-Pan and Pon Farr... So swirtching naming styles is going to look dumb. Any linguists got any ideas?

Troi's powers - Well, its one of several new Betazoid powers, as I didn't want them to feel left out. But coming up with new empath powers is harder than it sounds (I came up with a couple for the Remans too)

And as for the Mind Meld quote. I now have that explained as a meditative/concentration aid, and mental synchronisation (from those times that the speech was completed by both parties). So simply all I now need is a good 'standard' quote for a side-bar so taht lpayers can adapt their own...

I think this one would work best, as it is the most readily recalled mind meld quote. A meld is the first thing I think of when I hear or read it.

Another thought with the "My mind to your mind..." could this just be the Vulcan way of letting everyone else in the room know the Mind Meld is working. both parties have the same voice, timing, and words at the same time...

I am looking for that ideal image to grace my style of minimalist covers. So a nice small picture would suit.

While it might be difficult to catch a shot of Psionics 'in action' so to speak... I am looking for a default of Troi looking concerned, or of multiple Psions in one shot...

Anyone got any ideas.

Next up. The Title for the Psionics sourcebook. So far we have;

"The Sixth Sense"

or
"I sense great danger..."

The last one is my current favourite simply for all the implied cheese and comedy value. Any preferences on this?

Must your image be redrawn for a specific style (painting-like for example), or the picture as is will suffice?

"I Sense Great Danger" would be interesting.

What about "I Sense..." ? Or "My Mind To Your Mind" (it's not as cheesy or as funny as I sense great danger, but IMHO, it marks it as trek)
