Tell me something: which races/organizations in Star Trek hate the Trill?
I need an explanation as to why someone (in my Series) would unleash a genetically-engineered plague to wipe out their symbiotes, and I'd prefer not to use disgruntled Trill.

I don't think I remember an ennemy of the Trill being ever mentioned on DS9 (apart from bugs because of their allergy to bug bites).
Would a planet or an organisation that has been wronged by a joined Trill some time ago and that has grown to hate all joined the Trill do the trick for you ?
For instance, you could use a pre warp planet that was visited by a group of joined Trill scientists some time ago (when the Trill were beginning space exploration), whose culture was somehow upset by them (maybe the locals thought these people had a way to overcome death and this caused a lot of suicides and war over this "regeneration secret"), thus leading to a deep hatred toward these joined beings.
Or maybe a criminal organisation that was once thwarted by a Trill they thought to have killed (while they actually only killed the host) and who now wants to seeks revenge.
You could also use a group of scientists who decided that joining is giving Trills an unfair advantage over other humanoids and thus wants to even the odds by destroying every symbionts.
I grant you all of these hypothesis are quite far fetched but I can't come with better ones :o
Y'know, I wouldn't discount the "disgruntled Trill" angle. There was an excellent ST:TNG/DS9 crossover comic book mini-series that dealt with an insane Verad Dax attempting to kill all joined Trill with a virus.Quote:

The book is a series of short stories. You could probably stop into your local bookstore and read this section to see if it provides any insight?
Another possibility would be an organization that fears the symbionts for some reason. Consider: at one time, the Federation almost fell to a parasitic race ("Conspiracy" et. al.) that completely overwhelmed the host's mind.
Suppose one of the possessed officers was shaken to the core by this experience, and left Starfleet a changed man - perhaps unhinged. Suppose further that he has gathered an organization of like minded individuals, and these have become convinced that the Trill symbionts (indeed, *any* symbiont) pose a clear threat to the safety of the galaxy.
One of these folks is a scientist, and has developed a nasty biogenic weapon that only affects symbionts.
Once the symbionts are gone, the galaxy will be a better place (he reasons). And it's not even genocide (he further deludes himself), because unjoined Trill won't be affected (joined Trill, alas, will die when their symbionts do). AND, he's saving generations of future Trill from mental slavery. The fact that they're convinced the relationship is symbiosis and not parasitism is only proof of how far gone they are, and how desperately they need help...
Such an organization would need only a few dozen members at the most, and could easily operate from a small starship.

Aside from the actions of Verad in 'Invasive Procedures', who was the Graphic Novels villain. Joran Dax having been dead for quite some time at that point (the Graphic Novel takes place after the Dominion War)...
You could also take another literary Trill leaf from the Pseudo Canon 'Lives of Dax'... The story that features Commodore Pike also seems to feature another Symbiotic species... The ctreatures from 'Conspiracy'.
These hive aliens are far more insideous and evil, and appear to be the 'evil twin' of the Trill Symbionts. This hatred also carries through into the DS9 relaunch with some unresolved plot elements awaiting further novel installments...
But back to Verad, in the Graphic Novel, he seems to be covertly heading an independance (literally) party, who believe the Symbiontes to be extra-terrestial in origin and are trying to build a Trill for Trill, even if he has to kill every damned Trill on the planet...
Outside of the established enimnities in the DS9 relaunch discussed above, you could simply make an established enemy with grander plans.
The Albino. While Kang, Kor and Koloth may have slain their enemy, nobody knew about his Son. but now the Klingons are dead and gone, he is going to get his revenge on Dax. Of course he needs to test his new Bioplague to ensure it kills the Symbiont slowly, and the host slower...
The Romulans. The Trill are Scientifically astute. Perhaps they are on the verge of a major scientific breakthrough, and a 'rogue' Tal Shiar cell has set the plague loose to cover their actions while they 'retrieve' the technical data. Prior to the alliance, this does not even have to be a rogue action.
The Klingons. During a TOS series, the Klingons may well be going through a period of Hostility, and have set the plague on Trill. Facing the danger, the players are assigned to a far younger Curzon Dax as he attempts to make peace talks with Captain Kang, the leader of the Klingon Fleet (sure the players know how the NPC stuff eventually works out, but that doesn't mean you cant make their lives difficult in the meantime).

A botched observation mission where a culture learns "They are not alone..." long before they are ready for it. Some of the members of the team were Trill.
Perhaps one was injured and the symbiont had to be transferred to another unjoined Trill, somehow the culture viewed this - perhaps someone native was on the inside with a recording device.
This unified the world, terrified as they were of the alien threat.
The observation team was forced to flee.
Years pass and the world has now gained space travel, perhaps a unique form of FTL that does not register and therefore the planet remains under a limited quarantine due to the botched contact. Now quite xenophobic, they have come to the conclusion that they must eliminate the alien threat and knowing that they are not as technologically advanced they focused on bioweapons.
They'll start with the Symbionts but perhaps their xenophobia will drive them to eliminate other alien "threats" as well, this leaves the PCs with having to stop one or more plots, try to establish contact with a culture that has an extremely embedded history of hate and fear that has been built on for centuries and attempt to find a resolution that ends the threat peacefully.

A brief and undeveloped idea ...
Use religious reasons...
Some alien races (like Ferengi for example) treat a group(s) of their society (like females) less that equal.
So there may be a race that believes that two minds in one body or that the whole idea of the it is something that should be fought and destroyed at all cost.
Of course they do not need to be a major space power, since the virus could sit dormant on a Trill patient 0 for a while and once he/she got back to their homeworld it would kick in ... and 28 days later you have a really bad situation.
Just like indians and chicken pox :(

What are Goauld? Worms in hosts.
SG-1 has the Tok'Ra. Why can't the trill have their own "Evil Symbiotes?"
This post has led me to a rather striking idea. What if the Trill are the Tok'Ra? If you use that, then maybe a few Goauld are still out there. If that's the case, then maybe you have the virus you've been looking for.

the only problem is being compared to SG1...
Unless you view the Parasites as something similar to the Goauld but it is still an interesting idea TZ.
