STRPG going away?

My local game shop used to carry all the STRPG line of products, but recently they have stopped. The things they had they had marked down (they were selling the Players Handbook along with three Star Trek comic books for like $10!). I asked the guy who runs it if they would be getting in Aliens and/or Starships and he said that no one buys the stuff and that Decipher seemed to be putting the emphasis elsewhere. He cautioned me that not only would they never get any in (other than special order, but I wanted to see those two books before I bought them) but that he really felt that the whole line was dying out.

What are everyone else's thoughts on that matter? I can get any other system from this place, but STRPG from Decipher is now a special order because no one wants the stuff. He said that in the last year I've been the only one who bought any of his STRPG stuff, so he, along with all the other shops by direct order from corporate headquarters, is to quit carrying anything from that line -- special orders only.

I was just wondering if anyone else noticed this too?

I think it's more a matter of what's hot (or not) in your area. Trek is still going strong as a game line and there are locations (like here, the last time I checked with my FLGS) where it still sells well and there is a lot of interest.

I have four gamestores within a 10 mile radius of me.

Of those only one carries Trek at all, and that is only through special order -- you have to know something is coming out and ask him to bring in a copy.

I'm just outside of the San Francisco Bay Area (wrong side of the Caldecott). Out here, Trek is all but dead. I can't even drum up interest for a game.

Well, I'm about 2 hours south of SF and our one FLGS brings Trek in and moves it pretty quickly. My group primarily wants to play D&D, but if I decided to run Trek, I wouldn't have difficulty finding a group to play it.

My FLGS had the PG & NG, but they didn't sell well - I had to order the SOM.

I wonder what it is that makes ST rpgs more popular in one area and less so in another. Is it that it only takes one or a few fans of ST rp-ing in an area to generate interest, and whether one or more fans are in an area is a pretty rendom thing, or is there some sort of local culture catalyst?

FAB, what part of Western PA are you from? I live in Greene County and go to a store in Morgantown which is pretty good at getting the new stuff at least when it comes out and the owner doesn't mind if you just order to see a book. If he doesn't sell it he can send it back to the supplier eventually. In addition get a copy of Game trade magazine, most independent sellers should have it, it may cost a couple of bucks but I think like my dealer they give it away for free with purchase so you can see before hand what is coming for some of the more arcane stuff, for example I recently ordered "Testament, RPGing in the Old Testament" just to see what it is like. But they always get at least a few copies of all trek stuff and sell it as well, but then again when WVU is just up the street what do you expect. :)

Here in the St. Louis area, at the game store with several locations, it's lucky if they have the PG or NG and I had to special order the SOM.

It just doesn't seem popular here.

But when I was in Baton Rouge, they seem to have sold a fair amount of DecTrek stuff at the local game shop.

Apparantly (according to my FLGS) CODA Trek (and CODA LotR) are selling very well in the UK. Can't say for the rest of Europe.

To the point that he's never got copies of anything but the PG as they sell as soon as the come in. The only thing he can't shift is the Narrators Screen.

Yeah, that tends to be the case here. I buy all of the DecTrek they can get in and there are at least a couple of other people in the Baton Rouge area who buy as well.

Aha, so you were the one who bought the last PG when they came out!

I'm about 45 minutes north of Pittsburgh. There are only a few comic/hobby places around, and unfortunately the three in my area are all the same company. So when they made a corporate decision not to carry Star Trek stuff any more, and any special orders are not for browsing but for purchase, that sort of limited my options.

I think I will probably go ahead and get Aliens and Starships. What about the Operations Manual? Is it really worth it? I'll end up getting them from Amazon, and while there is a return policy, I'd rather not have to pay shipping to send them back. So are all three worth buying, sight unseen?

Is that the one down in Fisherman's Wharf area or the one out at the mall near the highway? (Can't remember the name of the place.) The latter used to be pretty lame...

Actually, there are two major gamee stores (Source- Falcon Heights and Phoenix Games), both have all books in stock and they move steadily. We have a few Air Traffic Stores but they carry D20 and GW stuff (including miniatures). Incidentally, a group of large magazine stores in the area, called Shinders, carry a limited assortment of games, including all the Decipher trek and LOTR books.

I'd say things are pretty good here.
