Adventuring beyond the canon realms

So, I saw the great map posted here:

and thought to myself: Wow!

Anyone know if this map is based on any of Tolkien's works, or is it a fabrication of ICE or another company/fan?

I was thinking that the established realms of Middle-earth comprise of less than an 1/8th of what's on that map. A whole world to explore.

If you could, would you use such a vast tract of land in your game? Would you run or play a game that took the characters out of the familiar territories of the Shire, Rohan, Gondor, etc.?

I seem to remember some remarks about other contingents which Dúnedain explorers found early in the Third Age, as they were searching for the Undying Lands.
Also the Venturers of Numenor explored a lot of new land.

Meneltin is right. Some Numenoreans were great explorers, and it might be possible to run a ME exploration ship campaign with a ST flavor.

Arda, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the swanship Earendil. Her five year mission: to explore strange new lands, to seek out new peoples and new civilizations, to boldly go where no High Man has gone before!

OK, I admit I'm exaggerating the similarities, but I think the basic concept of exploring the world in a ship might be interesting.

Tell me about it!

For my upcoming LotR campaign, set in the late Second Age, I plan a three act model, beggining with the return trip of the Númenórean ship Enterprize (or the linguistic equivalent thereof) after 20 years of exploring the easternmost parts of Arda.

Keep us informed, Captain Novaes. I'd really like to know how that adventure goes.

That will take a little while yet, Sarge. But I´ll be sure to come back here often commenting and picking up suggestions :-)

Isn't an "Enterprise" really something from an industrialized, and thus evil world?
For it to be really in keeping with a Tolkienesque atmosphere it would be something like "Craftsman" :-)

Well, you could use 'enterprise' in the sense of embarking on a dangerous or risky undertaking. :)

Which is just what I was aiming for ;)

By the way, does anyone know how to translate "Enterprise" into Quenya, Sindarin or Adûnaic?

My source materials are not that detailed and so far I haven't got any luck looking it up on the internet.

I chekcked everything I have, also download compendiums on Tolkien languages from the web, but found nothing on enterprise or a synonym. Sorry. I do not think there exists a word for it.

How about combining "Enter" with "Danger", or "Explore" and "Danger."

(Enter into danger, explore danger. It would be similiar enough...)
