Well, THAT was an exciting week...!

Hey there everyone!

So, Wednesday morning I'm at work, and I start having chest pains. And they don't go away. I call my doctor at lunch, and he tells me to go to the ER NOW! (I have a bad family history for coronary issues).

Well, in the end, I'm ok, but I did have to stay in Abington Memorial for 2 days, and get a battery of tests (including a heart catheterization... Owee! I do NOT recommend them!:D ). I'm home now, and will be laid up for a couple of days (I ain't gonna tell you where they put in the tube for the catheter, but it HURTS!:eek: )

It was very scary for a while, tho. Wifey & I even had to have the dreaded "Here is what you have to do if I DIE..." talk! :( No fun all around, and I'm glad it's over.

I may be doing some life-re-evaluating, tho. Nothing like the fear of dyin' to put a few things into perspective. ;)

So, what's been goin' on here while I was laid up?

This is an issue I have a great deal of sympathy for: my father passed away from a heart attack at forty-three, an age bracket I'm starting to push myself. While my father was something of an anomaly in this respect - on both sides, we tend to be fairly long-lived - the fact of the matter was that he had been asking for problems like this for fifteen years before the incident. Long work hours, constant stress, the belief that if it wasn't difficult and infuriating, it wasn't worth doing...etcetera. I've also had a couple of friends/acquaintences who ended up having attacks in their late thirties, all as a result of slavishly following the late-Twentieth century mantra of "The Corporation is God."

All the best with finding out what the cause of this disturbance was (hopefully nothing more than a case of muscle spasms or the like), and in having some real fun if you indeed decide to try something a little different. Two words I've found to be a definite plus in the putting-it-all-behind-you category: Harley-Davidson. :)

I've never had any kind of life-threatening medical problems, but after a few days in a plane with lieutenants practicing their landings, I've decided to make sure my will is up-to-date. The funny thing is, I'm in this situation because I re-evaluated my life and decided it was time for a change. Well, at least if I die in a flaming ball of wreckage, I'll go out doing something fun.

Take care of yourself, Hugh. If the doc tells you to exercise and diet, take him seriously. Being fit and healthy takes effort, but feeling strong and energetic makes it worthwhile.

OVerpirced and overrated: if you have the money, go BMW. Kawasaki makes a nice retro-Triumph thing. Me...got a Buell. Best life therapy I've seen.

I agree with Liz about bikes. I've had several friends get hurt bad on those things. About a year ago, a young airman in my squadron was killed in a bike accident. They're just too risky for me.

Styro, do you know anything about ultralights? They can be a lot safer than they look, assuming that they're built right and operated safely. Make sure you get help from an expert when you build it, and have it inspected by more than one expert before it flies. DO NOT make the first test flight yourself; get someone who is experienced in that particular make and model to do it. And remember above all, just because you don't need a license to fly it, that doesn't mean you can or should fly without taking lessons. A lot of ultralight companies won't sell you a plane unless you get some flight training, and some offer discounts to licensed pilots. Just find an instructor who understands ultralights and don't fly your own plane until he says you're ready.
