Decipher announces today that effective January 23rd it is transferring responsibility for the RPG product lines from its Los Angeles office to Decipher headquarters in Norfolk, Va. We want to thank all of the Los Angeles RPG Studio staff, contract writers, and contract artists for the excellent product they have helped us create over the past two years. I can see why Decipher would want to consolidate their operations. It would save them a lot of money and enable them to control their production schedules more easily. This means our books will be on-time!

Still, here's hoping that, despite the closing of the L.A. studio, our favorite ST game writers will continue to work for Decipher on a regular basis.

(After all, a writer can work anywhere thanks to phones, Federal Express, fax machines, and the Internet.)

See, I get moving the RPG division to the “Home Office”. The problem is the majority of their licenses are where? LA.

Now when ever they get an idea for a new Trek product, Decipher will have to phone, fax, and email the hell out of Paramount in order to get info and approval (as opposed to [ideally] making an appointment, going to Paramount, stating a proposal, getting yeas and nays, and then getting further info).

I’m going to give this a honest chance (‘bout half a year/full year)…I mean, Decipher can’t get that much further behind…can they?:rolleyes:

"Stating a proposal"? Well, that's the early stage of a licensed product development. But after drafting, editing, drafting, editing, and final draft, that material must then be sent to Paramount for a total review of the material, telling them what should be deleted and what should be changed. After all of that, if the material satisfies Paramount, it becomes approved and ready for layout and printing.

IOW, major headache if you want to get into THAT kind of business.

From the state of play it's probably more to do with operations than anything else. I suspect (hope!) the writers won't be too affected by it.

This is probably a decision based on the fact that their two main 'behind the scenes' producers left the company; So they probably decided to utimise existing offices / staff back at their headquarters.

The Majority of the writing doesn't need to be done in an office down the corridor, and if it's a modern enough company then it should be easy enough to have writers work from home.. So long as they meet those dedlines.. and just email it ;)

I do hope they aren't getting laid off.

Let's hope they get reorganised quickly and get the books out soon.

well i don't see any problem with not being in la for approval. plane tickets are so cheap and this is their tenth year of star trek ccg which requires approval too. they also run the star trek fan club so i don't think long distance would be any problem especially in this day of email, fax, and overnight mail. however i don't see how this will fix our problem of late releases with the books just at the printers for months. there's got to be something else going on.

Really, there's little need for anyone to physically go to Paramount more often than once a year. We'd never been to New Line or Tolkien Ent. for instance.

Matt, are you moving to Norfolk, or still writing from LA? I hope you and the other guys are not getting laid off.

i don't know his role with lotr rpg, but at decipher's lotr rpg board Jeff Tidball said he will no longer be working with lotr rpg.
