The Star Trek Series Builder Thread!

Saw this on another BB, and it looked fun enough to try here.

If you don't know how a "builder" thread works, you take an idea that the person above suggests, flesh it out, and then put in your own seed. An example:

Entry One: As Capt. Bob fired his Phaser, he was stunned to discover that...

Entry Two: The power cells had run out, forcing him to use the standard "Kirk running jump kick" maneuver on the Klingon. The Klingon, being taken completely by surprise, fell into the lava pit below, but not before telling Capt. Bob...

And so on, and so on...

Easy, eh? :D

What I would like to do is create the setting, background, and characters for a new "Trek" series. I'd like to try to keep it semi-serious, so funny posts are ok, but completely off-the-wall-silly or OT posts are not. Some ground rules:

* The series will be set Post-Dominion War. Voyager has returned, but only recently.

* All of the TV shows and movies are Canon. Yes, even Nemesis and Enterprise. None of the novels or comics are canon, but feel free to include elements from them if you choose (for example, some element of history of Vulcan from the novel "Spock's World").

* Let's maybe go for something a little more... gritty... than the standard Trek. Don't loose the Trek idealism, but test it.

*Let's try for a more swashbuckling, Original Series feel, rather than the more buttoned-down approach of the later Treks. Just because I think that it will be more fun. :D

* Feel free to use established characters as "guest stars", but don't turn them into our stars. We can create our own lead characters.

* If someone puts something in a previous post, you don't get to contradict that "reality". Use it or add to it, but don't deny it.

OK, let's have at it. I'll start:

We begin with Capt. Jack Turner, a rugged European born Terran in his early forties, formerly of Starfleet. He currently is living on a run-down colony world at the edge of Federation space, after his dishonorable discharge due to an error in judgement on his part that lost not only his ship, but an entire engagement with the Dominion during the recent war. Hundreds of men and women were killed because of his mistake, and he is having a hard time forgiving himself. He would have probably spent the rest of his life drinking himself into a stupor were it not for the fact that he met...

. . . Stonnek, a Vulcan Master denied acknowledgement of his mental, philosopical, and spiritual achievements for political and social reasons; The first of a few to publicly admit that Vulcans have emotions, need them, but must strictly control them, Stonnek was rebuked by other Vulcans, particularly the Kohlinaru, who would fool the galaxy and themselves into thinking that Vulcans could and should divest themselves of the emotion of compassion which elevated them above mere machines.

Outcast from traditional Vulcan society, Stonnek spent his days as a hermit on the outskirts of the colony on Canaris IV; Once a month, he would come into the colony proper to acquire food, supplies, and some new philosophy books. Each trip into town, he would also partake of a non-replicated cup of a rare Vulcan tea which the Ferengi barkeep was somehow able to acquire.

It was over tea in which Stonnek taught his students; He had acquired a handful over the years he was there -- a philosophy student from Earth, two unconventional spiritual seekers from Vulcan, a bored Andorian freighter captain, and the Ferengi barkeep more interested in keeping his customer happy than really learning anything.

Stonnek was fond of one of his own teacher's sayings -- "Logic is the beginning of wisdom. . . not the end;" -- and it was this uncharacteristic saying during a teaching session which caught the attention of Jack Turner. . . .

Turner had been makig one of his rare trips which went deeper into Federation space then he felt confortable with these days. But the feringi barkeep was the only person he knew who could get him real alchole.

Turner at first had pushed off the Vulcans ramblings as "new Age" Vulcan mystism a recent trend which had gained momentum after the Dominion War and paid little attenion but the Vulcan had persisted in trying to open up the brooding human and eventually Turner had come to look forward to the disscussions he and Stonnek had then buying the booze he was coming for.

But then one day while the two were talking about he subject of forgiveness Turner noticed a familar person dressed in a Starfleet uniform enter . . .

And with the delivery of the isolinear chip, Admiral Janeway spun on her heel and paused. . .

"Nice to see you again, Mr. Stonnek." she said.

"And you as well, Commander. . .Admiral. . . Janeway" Stonnek said. "Its a shame that duty makes the time between us short. Please give my regards to Tuvok."

And Spock, if you ever see his return from Romulus. Stonnek thought.

Admiral Janeway nodded at Stonnek, paused at the saloon door, and smiled. "You might want to take Mr. Stonnek with you, Jack."

"Admiral ?" Jack questioned.

"People tell me he was able to pull your nose out of the bottle. I'm certain he can pull your ass out of the fire when need be."

"Why would I want a navel-contemplating mystic with me on such a critical mission ?"

"You'll need a cooler head when the chips are down. But, I think Mr. Stonnek can explain it better. . . ."

Stonnek cleared his throat and raised an eyebrow. "Starfleet Academy Class of 2343; Science division; My specialties included Physics and Spatial and Sub-Spatial Anamolies."

"So you're a scientist. Starfleet has lots of those."

"I also double-majored in Security and have mastered four different forms of personal combat including Taiji Quan, Klingon Dahar, and Vulcan Tol-Shaht. In addition, my last posting was as Diplomatic Liaison to the Sheliak Corporate."

Jack Turner blinked and stood slack-jawed. "Uh. . .well, Mr. Stonnek, . . . it seems . . . that we'll be working together."

"Good," Janeway grunted. "I'll change the orders myself. Welcome back, Mr. Stonnek."

As Janeway left, Stonnek peered at his new commanding officer's empty glass and hoped that the lessons he taught Turner truly helped him solve his problem.

Starbase 411 was a large and extensive facility one of the few in it's sector of space with full refit ability and one of even a few which was carring on the post war refits of the many Defiant class ship's into the new Science Escort role. One of these the USS King was being rushed to completion under emergency orders.

The King had an enviable record from the war with no less then 17 Jm'hadr vessels and 34 Cardassian, most of the later had been merchantmen, to its credit. But it was peacetime and it was time for the King to find a peaceful role. That was way Starfleet had began to convert many Defiants to a hybred Escort surveyor role, the thinking being that it would give a surveyor a chance to survive if it encountered an unfriendly situation which many such vessels had not before the war in the gamma quadrant.

The refit had gone largely uneventful until someone had showed up in the former cargo bay 3 now known as the Space Sciences lab . . .
