As an avowed Clint fan, I have to fill in the blank on this one: Rawhide ran for seven years - and was, to the best of my knowledge, Clint's most visible work up to that point - before the series ended and he broke off for the Spaghetti Westerns.

As a completely off-topic and gratuitous point, Clint tossed aside his agent's advise in order to star in the Leone pics; something about the stories spoke to him, and the Man With No Name roles bought him the notoriety (and funds) required to start up Malpaso Productions.

The other individuals noted as having short-lived television careers, but being highly viable in the movies, are - again, to the best of my knowledge - very accurately referenced. :)

Curious thing about the "Man With No Name" - he does have a name. His name is explicitly established in the movies... Anyone know the name?

BTW, he did not leave Rawhide to do the movies - he played Rowdy Yates through the '65-'66 season. Per un pugno di dollari (A Fistful of Dollars) was released in 1964 and Per qualche dollaro in più (For a Few Dollars More) in 1965, both shot during the Rawhide season hiatus. Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (The Good, the Bad and the Ugly) was released in 1966. He'd already finished making GBU before any on them were released in the States, and it was really the US releases that made him a star.

OT: Yar was my fav TNG character until Ro. Then there was a tie :) She stood out since she came from hardship and the failed aspect of the Federation, and I liked that :)

Yeah, liked Lt. Ro to, though her joining the Maquis never sat well with me. Like Yar's death it seemed to be very hastily thought up and not well executed.

It is, however, consistent with her established background and motivations. Consider: she was always bitter at her refugee status, because she felt the Federation could have stepped in to prevent the Cardassians from doing what they did to Bajor. Whether that's true or not isn't the point; it's what she believed.

Now along come the settlers in the Fed/Card treaty, and she sees the Federation abandoning people *again* (from her perspective). It seems quite natural that she would help them.

Now, here's a question: is there any canon evidence to suggest that she survived the pogram against the Maquis that the Cardassians conducted with Dominion help? Supposedly all Maquis were wiped out. I know that the DS9 relaunch books assume she survived, but they're not technically canon.

Well, I admit, I don't know when Crosby's layout was published, but I can safely say no one knew who she was or made an issue of it until her name popped up in the main cast credits of a highly publicized show. TNG was a mainstream show. Crosby did not have any mainstream success or notoriety prior to that. So prior to that, I'm certain there was no special note given to her layout. And I definitely recall that it was, at the very least, mentioned during the announcement that Crosby was leaving the show. And that's where the rumor arose that she was booted for the nude stuff. But note, I said "rumor." Not fact. I had no interest at the time in separating truth from rumor, primarily because I couldn't have been bothered to care less. It was just something I heard, filed away and then went on to worry about something else. Whether it's two different situations or not, I'm only telling you what I heard and what I saw at the time.

The reason I mention the rumor was believable was because, at the time, there was a very real stigma involving public careers and nude photos layouts. That may defy logic considering many starlets dropped their skivvies in movies and such, but it's also true.


Anyways.

To me, Ro Laren was like Yar version2.0; almost as if she was the character Yar could have been. She had everything that I felt Yar's character was missing. And she was just a lot more interesting to me. Ro was great. Her exit from the show was not done well, in my opinion, and was blatantly out of character. I think Forbes made a mistake bowing out of the Trek thing. Ro was such a popular character that she could have milked that role for all it was worth for a very long while, much like Dorn did. I even heard that Major Kira's role in DS9 was oriiginally intended for Ro.

Fesarius, I think that an interpretation of her character. I can see it, but I balance it against the very real character growth she experienced. It was like all the development Ro had gone through had been cast out the door to facilitate her swift exit from the show. She came to understand that things were not as simple as her heart or emotions would seem to claim. It just felt like backsliding.

And no, there is no canon evidence to suggest she survived or even was killed. Honestly, there's no canon evidence that says she even stayed with the Maquis longer than two weeks. Her name could have easily been mentioned in DS9 or Voyager; there were plenty of opportunities. But nothing. I assume that's why S.D. Perry felt she had license to bring Ro back for the relaunch.

Yes, years earlier, as in 8. Her layout was in the March 1979 issue of Playboy, itself pretty mainstream. And yes, she did have a fair bit of public notoriety, being Bing Crosby's illegitimate granddaughter.

Gene Roddenberry was quite aware of her Playboy layout. It was never a secret. Any speculation that a Playboy layout 8 years earlier cost her the job is... well, just plain silly.

Hell, Marina Sirtis had appeared nude or seminude in three movies prior to her stint in TNG.

What I have found interesting is the fact that Croby and Sirtis were originally being cast for each other's parts. I mean, could we have comprehended the following?

Crosby as Deanna Troi
Sirtis as Natasha Yar

On the lighter side, if Crosby had still asked to be killed off, do you think Worf would have been promoted to ship's counselor?:D

Personally, that episode should not have been aired in the first place, especially when Michelle Forbes declined to be part of the DS9 main cast.

As for Yar's death, well, the episode was about this evil entity who committed acts with no purpose other than for his own pleasure. Sure, we could go back to the TOS formula (kill of a security "redshirt"), but killing one of the main cast have greater impact, however senseless it was.

Nope. Like Sito Jaxa and Thomas Riker, Ro Laren's whereabout is still unknown.
