Douglas Adams has passed away

I guess a lot of you colonial types never got to hear the radio series (ca. 1978)? The original and best version of the Guide...

And I was still holding out for another Dirk Gently novel.

Those of you who recognise my sig line, will know I was a fan - to paraphrase: "We will be late, as in the late Adamsdouglasadams - it's a threat, I was never much good at those..."

He will be sorely missed... still, rumour has it he's only spending a year dead for tax purposes...

The world, especially those of us who enjoy Science Fiction Comedy, will surely miss him. His work was amazing, and I was lucky enough to be around to watch it.

Ironically enough, the Minor Planet Center announced the naming of asteroid 1998 CC2 as (18610) Arthurdent on the same day that Douglas Adams passed away.

Actually, those of us willing to listen to National Public Radio got to listen to it in some areas -- I heard it when I was in High School ('94-ish)

I too have experienced the joy that was the Hitchhiker's Guide Radio Programme...

My high school had/has a copy of the scripts, and my local library had the whole radio programme on cassette before some ignorant boob recorded country music over both sides of every tape. http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/frown.gif

The Hitchhiker's Guide was also my second experience with computer games, my first being Sierra's Cranston Manor...

Mr. Adams' passing deeply saddens me, his twisted, warped, philosophical sense of humor molding my own in unimaginable ways since I was ten years old...

Writers' deaths always hit me the hardest, because they are most intimate with us-- sharing their thoughts and feelings, making us laugh out loud, cry, shout triumphantly and what have you. The last time I shed copious tears over someone's death was the day I heard of Roger Zelazny's passing. I offer them freely tonight.

Mr. Adams, you were a truly hoopy frood, and I hold my towel aloft to you. The Ultimate Question is now in your hands and I'll be sure to ask you exactly what the Belgium it is when I see you, wherever you are.

(Flamestrike then goes on to mix himself a Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster and drink the rest of the room into a stupor)

Damn. Fine writer - I loved Hitchhikers and his Doctor Who scripts were amazing too. A shame the Shada episode never made it to the screen, even if Professor Urban Chronotis finally appeared in Dirk Gently (complete with his TARDIS!)
