Hmmm....

A few comments... I started this thread half in jest (and surprise that I'd be running a classic-era game), but as always some interesting (and amusing :D) replies.

With regard to the two uniform styles worn in Generations, it is actually very similar to the uniform styles worn by naval officers of the US navy. A whole bunch of different styles.

- You've got your whites. Kinda like a white jacket or shirt (long or short sleeved) and white trousers (for men) and a white blouse and white skirt for women. Rank insignia is given on the shoulder boards in the form of stripes.

- Khakis - The more casual duty uniform, khaki shirt and trousers/skirt, with rank insignia given as a pin on the collars.

- Blues - Dress uniform, blue jacket. trousers/skirt, white shirt, tie. Rank insignia in the form of stripes at the wrist. Also got your summer blues, which gives you a white shirt instead of the jacket, rank insignia at the shoulderboards.

In TNG, I'd view the TNG uniform as your whites, the early DS9 as the Khakis and the dress uniform as the Blues.

Around First Contact, I'd say you got rid of the DS9/VGR style uniform as the Khakis and replaced them with the First Contact style. Also a new sort of dress uniform (as seen in Insurrection) as blues. However, if you look closely, you can still see the season 3 TNG uniform in DS9 season seven, so the "Whites" are still present, just rarely used (makes sense for a war).


For TOS, I'd say you only have two uniforms, the normal ones and the dress ones.

For TMP, if you look closely, there is tremendous variation in the uniforms - from Kirk at the start (I'd put that as Blues). You then have full jumpsuits ("khakis"), and shirt and pants ("whites"). I don't think the TOS style uniforms would still be around.

We had an NPC Vulcan admiral in our TNG-era game who was the 2nd Vulcan to enter Starfleet and well he refuses to give up his old Movie-era uniform and well with his career experience who's going to tell him different.

Doesn't the uniform smell kinda bad after all that time? :eek:

Perhaps, you could have your PC's end up going on a deep cover special ops deep into Klingon space for some reason....

I, (way back when) started my PC's in the TOS era and moved them pretty easily into TMP era after enough data had come out...I currently have my game set in a time period just toward the end of TMP era (in my mind anyway) set in the year 2303.

It's kind of fun playing in one of the *in between* era's, as that it give the GM (or what every you call the guy running the game) a lot of room to play with.

For instance, I have already introduced early versions of the Ambassador Class ship's into the game, seems to be working well so far.

Yep, that's pretty much what I was getting at. Except I didn't know al lthat about contemporary uniform nomenclature :)

I'd noticed the older TNG uniform cropping up during DS9's later seasons as well.

In TOS there was actually some uniform variation as well. For instance, a trouser uniform, for female officers appeared in a couple of scenes. And there where the two variations of Kirk's green wrapround tunic. Sort of the TOS equivalent of Picard's season 5 suede jacket.

Anyway, we still use the TNG season 3 unifrom in my campaign, in conjunction with the FC utility uniform. Although we also consider the original DS9 style to be in use, albeit a less commonly worn uniform, since most officers prefer the newer style.

Talking of the TMP uniforms, I have some excellent TMP era uniform artwork in CORELDraw format, drawn by a friend of mine. If anyone is interested, I could convert it into jpeg or gif format and post it.

It'll be up on the Intrepid's site eventually, but the offer is there.

My group really wanted to bring themselves through the TOS and Movie eras and it's going quite well. We've hit our stride in our 2nd season and plan on winding up in 2270 getting booted up into a refit Constitution, complete with fashion pajamas and really cool belt communicators. The plan is to end the series at the year 2300, but afterword, I really would like to throw a series placed in those "Forgotten Years".

Like Admiral Wolf wrote, it gives a lot of room to play with when you adventure between eras.

And you're right! So much room to play with and so many adventure ideas!!! For example, the Klingons and the Federation starting to get along, the Romulans disappear, the Tholians attack, Spock's marriage, the first contact with the Cardassians.

If an era screamed to be played it's this one. Lots of time to show and test new warp speeds, introduction of the Constellation and the Ambassador; I really love that ship, the Ambassador!

Not to take anything away from the TOS era! Speaking of... I plan on dropping on the board soon a Holloween episode dealing with the Tholians (or at least the good parts of it) and putting in Tholian ships on the Utopia Planitia forum.
