Branch colors

Interesting...I was thinking of the episode The Drumhead, where the Chief of Starfleet Security (can't recall his name) was present at the trial. I may well be mistaken, but I remember him wearing command-Red.

Sisko was Chief of SF Security?

In the episode "Homefront", Adm Leyton appointed Sisko acting head of Starfleet Security on Earth. Sisko quit that job and went back to DS9 in the next episode, "Paradise Lost".

I was trying to find that episode too. The way I explain it and later Sisko wearing red when Chief of Starfleet Security is simple.

This admiral never left the operations branch. Sisko who became a part of the command branch when he became a first officer, was selected because he had the knowledge to get the job done. He had been an engineer before not a security officer.

Scotty had the rank of captain but was never in command of a ship so he wore the turtleneck of an engineer.

Admiral Haftel, a sector commander who wanted to take Lal from Data, wore red but was clearly a skilled scientist.

Once you enter the command branch you stay in it but can still serve with divisions of other branches.

My "ranking" system has no rank above Commander in any branch other than command. I have it that if, say, an Admiral was in command of Starfleet Medical (like Adm. McCoy), they would wear the standard Command-branch uniform (red undershirt), but opposite their rank insignia, they would wear a small Cadeucis (sp?) to indicate they were a medical specialist.

Also, IIRC, Janeway was a science officer prior to becoming captain. So she went from blue to red in order to take command.

Makes sense to me, and it also leaves the door open for some fun encounters with senior command officers.

Chief Engineer: "You see Admiral, this improved dilithium matrix improves the warp field efficiency by 12 percent --"

Admiral (fixing CEO with glare): "Don't patronise me, Lieutenant. Have a look at the name on the front of those specifications - you may find it familiar..."

Characters who assume a commander has always been a commander may be in for a shock!

Something just occurred to me, as well. Do we know what branch Picard was aboard the Stargazer before taking command? In Tapestry he appeared to be a Science officer (aboard the Enterprise, 30 yrs later, that is) - I was wondering if he might have been a junior Science officer on the Stargazer before he jumped into the Captain's chair.

In the TOS movies, quite a few of them are cpt rank and still where their branch coloured undershirt. Scotty for instance in 'Generations' is of Cpt rank and has his goldish (engineering/check encyclopedia pg 210 current)under shirt.

Aslan, I always liked the breakout of colors in the movies, as well. Though I think the command peeps were white.

Thank you Qerlin, and yes you are right command was white. I just never really got off on white as a color, so I made my own set.

Well, that's part of the fun of being the CinC Starfleet. You get to design your own uniforms. Just make certain there's lots of gold piping; crowns and other British-styled rank insignias on the epaulettes (gotta have those), and maybe riding boots. those always set off an outfit. http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/wink.gif

That said, what would be a good new direction for the Starfleet uniform to take in the new post-Dominion War Federation?

Our campaign uses the utility uniform you see in the Voyager & later movies; we consider both authorized, though the grey shoulder one will eventually replace the colored-shoulder one. There is the duty uniform: that's the later TNG uniform with the crop jacket with the color on the body/black shoulders (ith knee-length skirt option to the pants). The whites from Insurrection are the new dress uniforms.

On the whites, only officers/warrant officers have the gold piping; otherwise the enlisted have white jackets & no piping on the pants. There is a floor-length skirt alternate for those who want it.

Big change for us was the combadge & rank pips. To avoid confusion, the neck pips now represent enlisted. Warrant oficers have the box around it like the admirals used to. Officer rank is shown on their combadge, as per the one alternate future. It's the arrowhead with the double bar from Voyager for enlisted/warrants. Then the officers have a slight different version on which strakes give the rank: half strake, lt. jg; full strake, lt.; and so on until 4 strakes for captain. Admirals have a large lower bar/strake with two bars added for the vice and full admiral. two thick bars for the fleet admiral.

I liked the combadge design, so we use it. I never really liked the neck pips. We actually had thought about branch colored strips on the arms denoting rank in a similar fashion to the combadge. (I like it better, myself...)
