the new Star Trek Series, a Prequel!

I believe that before the show is shot, the cast signed a five-year contract, and if the show managed to stay on for five years, they renew their contract every year thereafter (provided the show is still on the air).

I don't know if it is Roddenberry's idea. After all, during the mid-series run of TNG he was replaced by Berman, who ultimately succeeded Roddenberry as the head of the franchise. But it was TNG that began the tradition of running no more than seven seasons (while you're at the top of the game).

Anyhoo, just some random thoughts...

I've always heard that 7 seasons was the optimum length of a show for syndication purposes. Enough episodes to sell (the stations buying can recoup their money since they're not showing the same things over and over again), but not so many that the series is overwhelming (which would make it cost too much for stations to buy).

Actually, Reg, I remember reading somehwere that it was a Paramount thing. And the contract was for 6 years. That's why Terry Farrell bowed out when she did. She knew that the series only had one more season left and figured she should not renew her contract...

I'm looking at the new "Trek" the same way I looked at Voyager 7 years ago. I will wait and see. Rumors, no matter how juicy, are no guarantee of a good show.
I figure I'll give it a few episodes, like I did with TNG(which I hated at first, by the way) and see what happens.

You're right, DS9 cast had a 6 year contract right from the beginning. I'm pretty sure it was the same for VGR, not sure about the TNG cast though.

On the contrary, VOY has been on TV seven years too long, IMHO. Perhaps you're like me, remember only the first three seasons when Jeri Taylor and Michael Piller were the show's executive producers.

Well, they do have a single option available to them.

You are quite right that all vessels from the sailing ship to the Enterprise E have indeed been seen in one form or another in Trek.

There is another, and it is only ever seen the once.

In the motion picture there is a vessel pictured on the wall of the Rec room detailing the Enterprises linage, and it is situated between the Space Shuttle and the Constitution class. So according to canon, there was at least 1 more lesser known Enterprise in Earth's future history...

But I digress, we all know that they are not going to resurrect a 1970's design...

As long as we're nitpicking on Enterprises... I've never seen more than one aircraft carrier Enterprise in any of the displays. There should be two. During WW2, the first carrier Enterprise was in almost every major battle in the Pacific, won more battle awards than any other ship in USN history, and was scrapped after the war. The next Enterprise was the world's first nuclear powered aircraft carrier.

She saw action at the battle of Midway where her bombers sunk 3 Japanese carriers. She was later sold in 1958. (I'd heard she'd sunk, but this is what my book says! http://www.trekrpg.net/Board/ubb/wink.gif )

And while were being picky there's a US sloop named Enterprise built in 1874. And not the 'sailing' one either because this one is a steamer but a wooden hull.

Hello Everyone! As much as we would not like it to be true, it appears that Series V is about the beginning of the Federation with an original Enterprise Space Ship. I would have liked to see a series based on Section 31 but we have to live with it. Overall it might be kind of good!! At least there will be Klingons.

Ok, so they have blown it a few times with the name “Enterprise”. Thanks for the extra info, but I think that makes it worse. Enough “Enterprise”, I think we could use another name. Its like they want to do the same old stuff over again, because it worked once. How quickly do they want to loose their old fans? I have to agree with all of the anti-Enterprise sentiment as far as a ship's name is concerned. Overdoing it is overdoing it. Just ask The Backstreet Boys. They know from personal experience. Fresh ideas also mean fresh faces and in Star Trek, some of the most prominant faces are not just the main characters, but the ships involved. DS9 was fresh. A whole new look. Voyager, while everyone seems to think it sucked, was a new spin on an old idea.

I was in the US Navy. I am a veteran. And there are a lot of great names with great histories that can be explored in a new series. Why another Enterprise? Let's think about the origins of the word Enterprise, for a second... At that point in Earth 'history', something a bit more warlike might be in order, to prepare us all for the inevitable Klingon-Fed war. Perhaps the Gettysburgh or the Little-Big-Horn would be fun names. Something DIFFERENT, for the love of all that is good! Now, there is nothing wrong with an Enterprise making a few cameo/guest appearances. I wouldn't find that cheesy at all.

Of course, opinions are just that. And while Voyager had its moments, V should be just as good, if not better.

Personally, I have to agree with KlingonZ take. Section 31 would blow the rest of my hair off. Talk about a fresh face on the genre...

To extend the flogging of the deceased equiform... There's still one more historical Enterprise. The first USS Enterprise was a schooner built for the US Navy in the late 18th century and served with distinction against the Barbary Corsairs. Under the command of Lt Stephen Decatur, her crew entered a corsair harbor in a captured merchant ship, boarded the USS Philadelphia (a heavy frigate that the corsairs had captured), set the Philadelphia aflame, and escaped without losing a single man. Enterprise also took part in bombardments of harbor fortifications and became known as "lucky little Enterprise". During the War of 1812, some landlubber ordered her rerigged as a brig and overloaded with guns, which ruined her sailing qualities. Despite that, she managed to capture a Royal Navy brig, HMS Boxer. The former captain of the Enterprise, Captain Decatur, took command of USS United States and captured HMS Macedonian, 38 guns, the largest ship the USN had ever taken as a prize.

Thanks Drifter, I am glad that someone other than me thinks that a series based on Section 31 would be very interesting. Think of it as the next generation of Secret Agent or James Bond. If it was done right it would be very entertaining and the posibilities are endless and it would still be Star Trek with a spin that has never really be looked at. Everyone with any military or law enforcement background knows that for the Federation to exist they would have to have a proactive covert unit dealing in black ops or they would be overrun by people like the Cardassians or the Romulans.

Bakula takes a "Late" shift

HOLLYWOOD (Variety) - Former ``Quantum Leap'' star Scott Bakula has agreed to replace Burt Reynolds as the lead on the troubled CBS comedy pilot ``Late Boomers.''

Bakula will keep his options open, however: he has so far only agreed to appear, contractually, as a guest in the initial episode. That means he still assume the lead role on the upcoming ``Star Trek: Enterprise'' TV series.

Bakula had initially passed on the "Star Trek" gig, but has resumed talks with producer Paramount TV in recent days -- although no deal has been sealed. The show is expected to bow on UPN in the fall although nothing has been announced.

In "Late Boomers," Bakula will play Teddy Barnett, a former NFL quarterback who now owns a Chicago bar; Markie Post plays his ex-wife, while Adam Arkin plays his friend and personal physician. Production begins Friday.

Like Bakula, Arkin ("Chicago Hope") and Post ("Night Court") are also last-minute additions, replacing Joe Bologna and Michele Lee, respectively. Reynolds, Bologna and Lee all departed the project under various circumstances.

"It's best to say that things didn't work out and that we had creative differences (with Reynolds)," said Eric Tannenbaum, president of the show's producer, Artists Television Group (ATG). "We have great respect for the guy, but it wasn't meant to be."

But Arkin and Post, like Bakula, are on board only for the pilot. Arkin's first priority is the Studios USA drama "The Third Degree," for Fox, should that project go to series; Post is in first position on another ATG project, the WB's new version of "Electra Woman and Dyna Girl."

That means "Late Boomers" could potentially have to recast three key roles if the show is picked up to series.

"When it gets late in the casting season and you have material you like, you do things that normally you wouldn't," Tannenbaum said.

Bakula, Arkin and Post join previously announced cast members Joe Regalbuto and Robert Urich.

Wouldn't it be nice to see Series V with a non-human captain? We've seen Kirk, Picard, Sisko and Janeway, maybe its time to have a Vulcan or a Bolian in charge, anyone but not a human again. Would be a nice change of pace from the constant humans running about. Personnally I'd like to see the series shortly in the future, maybe after the Dominion wars and the return of the U.S.S. Voyager.
If ratings are falling wouldn't it be better to make it in the future so they could introduce new aspects to the StarTrek world? Apart from fans I doubt people will sit down to watch the beginning of the Federation if they did not watch the previous series. A new series based in the future with exotic aliens and a fancy new ship may garner some attention. I'm a fan so I'll sit down to watch no matter when it happens, but if they want new people to start watching then they should do something which the other series haven't done starting by changing the crew composition.
