This is a small-enough group that I'm going to go with a PC CO, in the spirit of the "Big Three" of TOS fame. We'll just have the "Big Four." :D

Renny, since you joined first, go ahead and make your character the Chief Hemlsman. Give him the rank of lieutenant.

Nolmir, please take the Chief Security/Weapons Officer position. As with Renny, please limit your character to the rank of lieutenant.

PG, the Chief Science Officer/First Officer position is yours. Your rank will be lieutenant commander.

And yes, that means I'm offering JALU3 the CO spot. If he declines, PG, it's yours.

Ok, SeaTyger, that works for me. Renny and I have been PMing (sorry we didn't clue you in) and that's the decision that I think that we were working towards anyway.

Starting Experience

As I stated above, I follow the rule:

1 advancement =
1 year of regular Starfleet experience, or
6 months of intense action (including combat/warfare), or
2 years of civilian life

Renny and Nolmir's characters are required to have the Promotion 2 and Command 1 edges. PG's character is required to have the Promotion 3 and Command 2 edges.

Each of you, please briefly describe your basic character concept, including Starfleet experience and when he/she graduated from the Academy (most folks graduate the academy at the age of 22, though there are exceptions, like Chekov).

The following are the only player species I will allow in the game (unless otherwise noted, these races appear in the Player's Guide, the Starfleet Operations Manual and/or Aliens):

Atreonid
Caitian (my creation; a close cousin to Regulans, as Centaurans are to Humans)
Centauran
Deltan
Denobulan (from PGoodman13)
Human
Regulan
Tellarite
Vulcan

Mixed-species characters are not allowed at this point (unless you're mixed Human-Centauran).

PG will be playing a Denobulan character. I don't mind an interspecies crew, but I would like to have at least one of you gents playing a human (or, at the very least, a Centauran). It's just not Starfleet unless there's a bunch of humans/near-humans running all over the place. :D

Lt Harry G Churchill, Starfleet Flight Control officer.

Born: Coventry, England, 2256.

Harry Churchill never had to work too hard at anything. He always did well academically without too much effort. He was usually the most popular guy in class. Good looking without having to work hard at it. It was assumed by those who knew him that he would sail through the entrance exams to Starfleet Academy, and sure enough he was identified as extremely promising by his Academy liason.

Doing well came easy to Harry Churchill and so it came as some surprise to him when he began to flounder as his academy tenure continued. He had chosen the Flight Control branch for training as it was considered the natural path to a Command position some day but his particular talents proved of little use when applied to the disciplines of spatial awareness, navigation and the rapid decision making process required in guiding a starship. He soon realised that he would have to put in the work to achieve competence in his chosen field. Long nights of study replaced the carefree parties of his early days at the academy. Even so, he was held back from graduating with the rest of his class and was forced to go through his cadet evaluation cruise for a second time before being assigned as a newly minted Ensign to the old transport vessel USS Ptolemy.

Churchill had learned a valuable lesson in humility during his last year at the academy and his dedication to improving his skills soon endeared him to his first commanding officer, Captain Bailey. Bailey, himself a ship driver saw a lot of himself in the serious young Churchill. By the time he left Ptolemy, he had risen to the position of Assistant Helmsman and the rank of Lieutenant j.g. A short posting to Starbase 7 followed, where Churchill acted as Department Head for the station's auxillary craft section. This vital experience, along with the promotion to Lieutenant which he achieved six months ago has served to prepare him for his current new posting as Chief Helmsman. Now 29, Churchill is a much more determined and conscientious young officer and eager to embrace the new challenges which lie ahead.

Assuming you are happy with the concept, i'll stat out the character tomorrow night.

Any ideas on names for the light cruiser? Anton has a few uses...it's a first name in some Eastern European cultures, also a name of a small river in England (a tributary of the Trent, I think), and also the name of a supercomputer. Nothing really specific.

Perhaps we go with names of explorers. Any ideas?

Okay, here are three possibilities:

USS Rooney
USS Moninger
USS Drake

Each of the namesakes were members of the Earth Arctic Archaeology Team who were listed as missing, presumed dead after discovering a crashed ship on the polar ice cap in 2153.

I like them in reverse order (Drake, then Moninger, then Rooney). I like the sense of history of using actual names from the show here and there to lend verisimilitude.

I pretty much agree with PGoodman13. Drake has a lot of known associations but I love the fact that it's not inspired by that Drake. Cool.

Now you're making me regret bowing out. Even so, been jonesing to try the new A Song Of Ice And Fire Rolplaying for a while and shall cope.

I should point out in case it's not already clear that I am in the UK so my postings maybe a little out of step, timewise, when compared to those of you in the US. I will try and post as soon as possible and as required by the game but thought I should mention it.

I'll go with Medical (what do you mean you don't have [insert medical drug here])or Navigator (who likes plotting in three-d?). Human of course, adding to the Terrans only club spoken about in ST:VI.

As for the name of ships, lets go with the Rooney. It'll set up for multiple jokes regarding this guy. lol ... maybe the Wilkerson or Thufir class ships. However, that Wilkerson, looks like it might be a warm bunking ship.

Why make Mickey Rooney jokes when you can make Andy Rooney ones? LOL

I'm with PG and Renny on the names. I like Drake the best.

And by the way, I'm coming up with a character concept and will post it in the next day or so, hopefully.

Renny: no worries. I want to try to stay on a 1-2 posts a week, at least at the start. If we can keep up with a heavier pace we will, but you should always have an opportunity to respond, etc., before anything significant happens. :)

Okay, we have a consensus; the ship will be named USS Drake (NCC-1553), for 22nd Century archaeologist Dr. Elias J. Drake, who was part of the Earth Arctic Archaeology Team that discovered a mysterious wrecked alien spacecraft in 2153. The members of the team went missing and were presumed dead. This is the first Federation starship to bear the name.

I'll find a forum to set up a game and we'll go from there. :)

I have a game we are starting up in mid to late January. Why I didnt post here first to recruit is beyond me. :)

I will post to the link and initial description of the campaign. I will have an overview and backstory in the next 7 to 10 days and characater concept is pretty much wide open at this point.

EDIT: I forgot to mention it will start on a smaller space station than that of DS9. Any ships used reguarly will also be smaller yet of newer varieties. Saber, Norway, etc. I am leaning towards a Saber class. Small, fast, and tough.


There will be action on and off of stations, ships, and planets. I intend to involve all aspects of the Star Trek lore from across many shows.

Even though you do not need to be a huge fan of Trek to play we will need a few folks that are at least reasonably familiar with the show and its canon to play the Fed officers.

System: I am 80% likely to use CODA but LugTrek is not of of the question. A friend and I are considering using the NWod rules as a basis for playing for speed and simplicity, but that would me a major undertaking.
(UPDATE: CODA is the system of choice most likely)

Interface: OpenRPG and 90% likely using Ventrilo if all the players were open to it. I don't mind typing it all out but will need to get a better keyboard because my laptop would be uncomfortable after a while.
(UPDATE: probably no ventrilo after character creation)

Times: I am thinking either every other Wed, Sat, or Sun night. 2 meetings a month would be all I could manage with a new kid and work/family responsibilities. I am GMT -6 (I think anyways. Oklahoma USA if it helps) and I would prefer 3 to 5 hrs of roleplay a session starting around 7 PM.
(UPDATE: almost 100% likely for sunday nights)

Requirements: None really other than the obvious. I would like players to be online, prepared, and ready to play 10 mins before start time. If you can't make it at least 24 hrs notice would be best but any notice is better than none. As far as books go, I havent seen a post on the sharing of PDF's of game systems on Mayhem and don't want to step on any toes so please correct me if I am. I can provide any and all source material via PDF if anyone wants it but after character creation you don't really need it. A simple, "I would like my guy to be a techie that can shoot well and is good looking.", is enough for me to help suggest skill paths and character growth. A firm grasp of the rules isn't wholly necessary either. 99% of the time simply suggesting a course of action and I can let you know which skills apply.

Summ up: Mainly its a just show up and play game. Episodic yet intertwined plot lines. If you get tired of playing we can rotate your guy out and new people in. I prefer we stay in character most of the time and I want to know if no one is having fun. I would like to run a pilot and gauge prolonged interest after that.

Timeline: Character creation between now and mid January with the campaign starting late January early February. The campaign will consist of 8 to 20 episodes per season and we can rotate out characters and advance timelines between seasons.
