How'd ya get yer name?

When I first started using the internet, I liked the chat room at the official Star Trek Website, and called myself Surak most of the time. I think Surak is a character to admire. When I first started posting here, I used the name Surak. Then things were adjusted and people lost their accounts. I was feeling kinda paranoid because my postings hadn't gotten much response, so I switched to Cochrane. I still think Surak is a better character than Cochrane, but Cochrane is also an important historical figure. So if there comes a time that you don't see anyone posting under the name of Cochrane, and you do see someone posting as, oh, say, Kahless, it just might be me. Then again, I don't care much for Kahless...

First I was known as Mendak. The Romulan Admiral from TNG. I used this nickname for the Decipher CCG board before there were passprotected handles. After two months a user claimed that he is the real Mendak and he succeded in convincing me. I wanted to keep something Romulan but special. So I combined my first name with a romulan beginning.

Well, like the two Dans, Owen, Doug, Don, et al. I was startlingly innovative and dug out my birth certificate to find a name. I left out the Harry, though, and the A is for Arthur, my Pa's name.

My alter ego is Liquidator Queeg. I stole that name from a Ferengi character my wife played in a LUG Trek game I ran a couple of years ago.

I have also used Groucho, Triac23, Bluesboy, and RonO. I used Groucho because of my love for old comedies, especially the Marx Bros. A triac is an electronics component. I chose it shortly after I graduated from electronics training. I used Bluesboy because I was really like that style of music. RonO is a long time personal nickname derived from my real name which is Ron Osborne.

Mine's pretty obvious. Named myself after my TrekMUX. It used to be exclusively for TrekRPGnet, but I find myself using the moniker more often on other sites.

On the net I also go by 'Piouhgd' (the name of a Butthole Surfers CD, which was a misprint in first pressing - it eventually got changed to Pioughd which is the correct phonetical spelling of the abbreviation P.O.'d - but I stuck with the first as a homage).

And even more rarely I'm known to go by my cat's name: Sushi Bob.

Publius was the pseudonym used by Hamilton, Jay and Madison in writing the Federalist Papers, a defense of the American Constitution during the Ratification process in New York (1787-1788). He’s a third generation muddian android w/positronic neural net w/an emotions matrix. The reason why he’s called Modem, is because of his ability to link to computers by touch (sort of a cybernetic ‘mind-mend’), thus enabling him waaaaay faster response time in activating systems and overrides.

My name is from my longest-running AD&D character from years ago (circa 1987, I believe).

Aldaron Stonewalker was a ranger who served as a scout in his nation's military during a great war. He spent much of his time leading raids with the dwarves of the Stone-Step Mountains (hence his name) and ended up something of a hero.

His name was based on an obscure being of power (one of the Valar, IIRC) from the Tolkien mythos: Aldaron, the Lord of Forests or somesuch - I thought it was appropriate for a ranger.

And no, it's not the planet destroyed by the Death Star in Star Wars!!!!
(You wouldn't believe how many times people tell me: "You mispelled 'Alderaan'").

Sorry Seargent . . . it's been so long since I've read the books and since I've seen the TV miniseries. Have you seen them Seargent? You really should if you haven't already . . . Reepicheep is potrayed VERY well as are the other characters.

Let's see - 'Scot', because I'm Scottish and like most Scots I really, really get a lot of amusement out of Scotty's accent. The rank came from a feeling of general self-importance at the time of signing up. The 'II' stems from the fact that when I first signed up from my home PC it went kaput for a while (transformer problems), so I had to set up another account to keep posting.

No objection here. I've been going by Sarge since I started frequenting boards about three or four years ago, and I always use it unless someone else on the board already registered it. Well, "Gaunt Man" is from one of my all-time favorite RPGs: TORG, where Gaunt Man is the High Lord of the horror cosm, Orrorsh. I've used it ever since I began playing Wing Commander (the first one), although I didn't actually look up what it meant in a dictionary until about three years ago!!

I decided on Lone Wolf because many years ago in England (hang on!, starting to sound like that lousy Robin Hood TV program that was on last night on TV) there was a series of game books (along the lines of Fighting Fantasy if you get them out in the colonies) featuring a character called Lone Wolf and, since I couldn't think of a better name I settled for Lone Wolf.

It's not exactly along the lines of the topic but in response to Gaunt Man I have one thing to say.

Lone Wolf - I used to love those books - surprised no one ever made them into an RPG. Though I was always bummed the only way to beat book two was to not give the magic spear to the valiant soldier...

I'm using my mundane name as I started posting during the Spacedock trials. Otherwise, I probably would have used my 'pen name' from an online game that I used to work on (Modus Operandi).

Thanatos comes from Greek mythology. God o' Death, as I recall. I chose it fer a couple of reasons:
1) I'd suffered a loss in my family at the time I started using it and felt very... close to death, prolly unhealthy but whatever
2) I always considered the name cool, even before I had any clue as to its original holder (the Greek Death Gawd)
3) It sounded cooler than my old Hotline handle (Sum1)

For those not familiar, it's a BattleTech thing. "Sho-sa" is Japanese for the rank of Major, and the Kurita part is Theodore Kurita, who later became the head of the Draconis Combine, one of the five great houses. I just love the Combine stuff.

I usually use "Centurion" for a nick (for the Roman and battlemech references) and didn't really want to use it here 'cuz I knew everyone would think "Romulan." I'm cantakerous that way.
