When Doves Fail: The Enterprise crew failed to defeat the energy being that was causing conflict between the Klingons and the Federation, leading to war...this could end two ways -- the Organians drop both cultures back to the stone age, or throw up their hands in disgust, leading to another war torn, militaristic Federation...
Our group has had a few run-ins with alternate realities, mostly versions of Mirror Mirror, though not the DS9 one, which I always found to be more camp than interesting...the Dark Passions books were promising, but having 7 of 9 save the plotline again was dissappointing...
Sigh, I wish that official Trek (namely DS9) had taken a different tack with the Mirror Universe. Still, I have high hopes that Decipher Trek will eventually publish the holy grail of alternate reality books -- The Mirror Universe sourcebook...any official word, after all, the book must have been nearly ready to publish?
Well, this is alternate realities we are talking about. The DS9 mirror universe could very well be an alternate version of a mirror universe in wich the Earth Empire remained (and in wich mirror Spock was executed as traitor).Quote:

Wich brings me to an interesting (nutty?) idea : there could be another alternate universe of wich the DS9 mirror universe is a closer mirror :
The DS9 mirror's mirror
In this universe, the Federation was invaded by the Cardassian - Klingons alliance (who did not went at war with each other when they made first contact). However, the Alliance is now on the verge of breaking apart because of internal dissensions between the two races. The UFP is now reduced to a handful of planet who try to resist the Alliance (Captain Ben Sisko is one of the leader of the Earth Defense Forces). Bajor has been conquerred, however, some Bajoran managed to rise to some positions of power; for instance, Kira Nerys is Sub-Intendant to the station Terok Nor. However, she is actually a spy from the Bajoran Resistance, and plans to overthrow the current Intendant, Garak, and take the station. She managed to contact the headquarters of the former UFP and is trying to form an alliance with them (they would help her to take the station, and in return would be able to use it as an outpost).
I had this thought for an alternate reality...bear with me as I am typing as I think...
In this reality the Crusaders of earth eventually covereted the entire world to Christianity. Their steel shod feet marched to every corner of the world.
As the years went by, knights and ladies put down every challenge that raised agaisnt then, including the would be genetic despot khan.
Moving into space, backed by the Galactic Catholic Church, they converted the Andoriansa and the Tellartites. While they never converted the Vulcans, they established strong ties with them and trade.
Then they met the Klingons. A race that claimed they had no gods and fought with the ferocity and warrior ken not seen since the days of Saladin.
Armed with the mighty starships, the plas-steel armour and their phaser-blades, the Knights of the Holy Catholic Federation ralied time and time again against these "space Saracens".
Then a knight came named Sir James Tiberius Kirk. Along with his own knightsm including the first Vulcan Knight, Sir Spock, Son of Sarek, they made war on the Klingons like none before.
After Kirk smashed the Klingons into subjection, peace ruled in the galaxy until the threat of the Romulans, the Cardassians and the whispered voices of the Dominion came to the ears of the Holy Federation.
With new enemies to face and the word of God to spread, they do so, lead by their most shining of knights...
Sir Jean Luc Picard, Knight of France and Captain of the Starship Enterprise.
Okay like I said I was thinking this one out as I went.

For a really scary alternate try the world of the Domination of the Draka (based on the excellent novels by S.M. Stirling). Imagine the Draka going out into space, enslaving every race possible...imagine Vulcans, Tellarites and other races with neck-tattoos working on vasst interstellar plantations. The Draka would make the Mirror Universe Empire look like a bunch of pacifists by comparison.
hmmm... the Crusade idea of yours is interesting... But not really one I'd use...
'Phaser Blades'... Hell, I already have a mirror universe pulling the Star Wars thing... :D So I can see where that would be identified...
However, it seems all nicey, nicey for the Crusades... One of christianities lowest points, and a lasting horror still affecting the middle east today. The Catholic church was rather unpleasant, and the idea would need to take into account missionarys that forcibly convert entire tribes/species... And of course the shadowy Inquisition, who's name is whispered in fearful darkness...
The result of a millenia of the Crusade mentality would likely put humanity back technologically-speaking as the Pope and his council were actively retarding scientific advancement (yet another reason for the several crusades against the Saracen)... As a result the TNG tech would probably be more in line with TOS, and vast quantities of Earths Middle East, and possibly non-christian cultures such as the budhists, taoists and others accross the asian continent would no longer exist.
- Just trying to add a sliant to the idea... For where it might be able to go...

I like the 'Holy Federation' idea. Sir Worf, a Klingon raised by Padre Rozhenko, is now converting the Klingons to the Galactic Catholic Church, and Lord Spock is on Romulus, aiding the Reformed Romulan Rebels. ;)

Dan, I think the dark underbelly would truly be what counts, and I like the idea of stagnated movie tech, not full blown TOS but maybe Generations? And of course everyone whispers the name Inquisition.
The Bajoran question is a good one. I don't think they would see the Prophet's as servents of God until after they conquered them Bajorans, then they would make the Angels, like they did here on Earth.
Now the Prophets themselves may not let them through the wormhole...so that would be a big problem as well...
Work as a Klingon Knight? Hmmmmm...that could work too... So Rozhenko was an Engineer who then turned to the service of God after his career, maybe, maybe :)

If christianity was unable to turn a local religion, the Pagans are a good example, they simply incorporated it. Thus several traditional holidays replaced the celtic rites.

Now the Bajorans canonically have strong faith, and so, while peacefful would be unlikely to change beliefs, so they would either end up as the opposition in a very nasty religious war, or would have the prophets incorporated into standard texts...
The prophets would indeed be seen as angels, but the Wormhole. The Celestial Temple... The closest analogy would be the gates of Heaven.
So they would be guarded. Heavily with only the dead sent through... But what if a changeling ever came back? To touch the face of God????

Here's a reality in wich Picard failed to prevent the relocation of the Ba'ku planet. Now the Federation has laid hand on the meaphasic particles, and soon its doctors are devising a way of considerably extending humanoid lifespan, making people virtually immortals. However, word has spread that this discovery may not have been made without some violation of the Prime Directive, and that the destruction of the E-E in the Briar Patch may have been done with some Federation assistance.
The Federation is threatening to break apart, while at the same time the major powers of the Alpha and Beta Quadrant are trying to steal her the secret of immortality...
:( Seemed a good idea at the time, but now I don't really find this universe that interesting. Could be an nice place to stop in a SliderTrek game, if some member of the Crew has been mortally wounded, or has contracted a disease against wich there is no cure.
Some ideas I came up with... feel free to take 'em and run with them...
The Voyager while in 1996 gets taken over by Henry Starling and he reverse engineers it, thus severely altering history.
The Enterprise NX-01 had been destroyed while transporting the pilgrims to the Great Plume of Agosoria.
The Defiant is one of the Federation ships transported from the Badlands to the Delta Quadrant.
Cochrane never invents the warp drive and another world becomes one of the Federation founding five (i.e. Bajor, Trill, etc.)
Kirk returns to the Enterprise-B from the Nexus and convinces Soran to be the one in the engine room who gets transported into the Nexus.
Benjamin Sisko actually dies while using Gabriel Bell's identity.
The Pagh-Wraith universe :
In this universe, the Prophets were exiled out of the wormhole (either simply destroyed, or sealed in the Fire Caves), and the Pagh-Wraith now inhabit it. Under their influence, the Bajoran have evolved quite differently, and are an imperialistic, blood-thirsty people. As soon as they were able to travel in space, they started to conquer and crush other worlds with a savagery even the most feral species can't understand. After invading Cardassia (and reducing its people to utter slavery and tortures - for those who like reversed situation, this universe can feature Governor Kira Nerys, Supreme Master of the Cardassian slaveworld, and the head of the Cardassian resistance Dukat), they're now trying to crush the Federation as well...
This universe's Bajorans could just be extremely fierce and bloodthirsty (making Klingons merciful in comparison), but it could also be that some high priests are granted inhuman powers by the Pagh-Wraith, thus tipping the balance a little bit more in favor of these crazed Bajorans.
C5 - that has a lot of potential ...

Yes. In at least one of my SliderTrek realities, it's the Bajoran Empire which is the aggressor.
In another reality, they Bajorans and Cardassians are fast friends, and First Minister Nerys is carrying on an affair with Legate Dukat.
The idea here was not only to have the Bajoran being agressors, but also savage and blood-thirsty beyond comprehension, after centuries of guidance by the Pagh-Wraith.
Some sort of Devil-possessed Bajor, in fact, where the only possible way to defeat them may be to release the Prophets from the Fire Caves...
Then again, you can also play that like "Dark Side of the Prophets..." :D
Two years into what the homeline calls the four years war a group of Starfleet officers and corporate magnates launched a coup against the "incompitant cowards on the council who have led us to the brink of defeat."
What no one knew was that the Klingons were stretched to the limit and ready to snap, which is what happened in the home line.
Here a brief civil war gave the Klingons time to regroup and the war became known in this universe as the eight years war.
The Vulcans tried to withdraw from the Federation but the Human and Andorian coup leaders ordered their loyal forces to destroy Vulcan, thus showing the price of defiance. The destruction of Vulcan caused a number of ships to go renegade but after a brief struggle the Revolutionaries had seized power.
This leads to a gov't slightly behind in tech level but more focused on military preparedness and patrol of "member" worlds.
Political prisoners are forcably turned into cyborg killing machines controlled through mind control chips and rebel groups strike at the forces of the evil Federation.
I used this universe as the basis for a campaign once and the players enjoyed the differences to a normal campaign.

How bout an alternate Earth where the French emerged dominant (rather than the Brits) at the end of the 17th century?
Human culture evolved more along the French model (with English being a dead-and-dying-tongue).
Rather than a global British Empire, the sun never sets on La Belle France (I know I mispelled that, but hey). America lost the Spanish-American war when France sided with Spain, and never gained her position in today's world.
With the vast revenue and power of her far-flung empire, France was able to IMPOSE a solution to the tensions in Western Europe and avoided WWI. Without the blood drain caused by the war, the Russian Empire remained strong and the Bolsheviks and other Communists were crushed out of hand.
Rather than enduring two massive world wars, and a fifty year stand-off, France was able to expand and grow through minor brush-wars in which she proved her preeminence.
France's first space flight soon followed, and within ten years (1950's-60's, the first off-world colonies were established.
Contact with the Vulcans was swift, followed by a United Earth government (with France as the power behind the throne). and then contact with other races.
Distrustful of the other powers, and with growing-off world colonies, France (and therefore the Terran government) decided to limit interaction with the other powers. Without the support of the Andorians, Tellarites, and Vulcans, Terra fought a war with the Romulans to a bloody stand-still.
Unable to win a decisive battle, Terra sued the Romulans for peace, creating a massive Neutral Zone (roughly 2.5 times the one we know).
Smashed and stalemated as a galactic power, Terra soon joined the fledgling Federation and sent a delegation to its headquarters on Andor.
Since that time, Terra has been known as a prime exporter of wines, cheeses, and occasionally, a Jerry Lewis film.;)

Babbage completes his Difference Engine, starting the computer age a century early. With the aid of the increased calculating power, technology moves ahead more briskly. British control over the technology in the early stages of development invigorate the Empire and lead to drastic changes in the timeline. Read "The Difference Engine" by William Gibson and Bruce Sterling for background. Now fast forward to the 24th Century. A paternalistic British Empire initiated First Contact with many species, and colonised them, with all the bad and good elements of British colonialism affecting the resulting Commonwealth.

Cochraine (sp?) dies befor being able to invent the Warp Drive and Vulcan doesn't land on Earth. The Vulcans continiue their conflicts woth the Andorians and make first contact with the Bolians. The Bolians quickly manage to make the Vulcans and Andorians go to peace. Soon after the Federation is formed with the Bolians as the most important mamber. Earth developes Warp Drive (20 years later) and asks to become a member of the federation... They are denied since earth is still divided. Earth unites, starts building starships and goes to war with the Federation. A diplomat, James T. Kirk finaly manages to negotiate peace with the Federation and it's diplomat Spock of Vulcan. Soon after Earth is accepted into the Federation, but only as a minor member. James T. Kirk has been asigned as the First Officer of the USS Enterprise which is under command of Admiral Spock. 3 years after, the USS Enterprise is destroyed by the Klignons who are quite similar to "our" Klingons. Commander Kirk dies, but Admiral Spock survives. He goes to Vulcan and soon after to Romulus. The USS Enterprise-A is given to Captain Vixx, a bolian who makes first contact with the Gorn. the federation makes an alliance with the Gorn, a later on with the Klingons.
The end result is quite similar to "our" universe, but I usualy use these events in my Parallel universes.. What do you think?
Part II
The federation founds out the whereabouts of Admiral Spock ad trace him to an unknown planet. Since the Romulans led their conquest "the other way", not thowards the federation, Romulans were unknown to the Federation. Federation makes first contac with the Romulans and, thanks to Spocks influence, make an alliance with them. (Spock has managed to prove hte existence of Romulans through some ancient scripts he found on Vulcan) the Federation makes first contact with the Cardassians and imediately go to war. The Federation takes comand of a very important base strategic position, Terok Nor thanks to Captain Picard, the first Officer of the USS Enterprise-D (Captain by rank, first officer by position). The Bajorans soon join the federation and discover the Wormhole. The Dominion war starts sooner, since the Founders are afraid that if they don't attack imediately, the Federation-gorn-Klingon-Romulan alliance would be to strong. They ally themselves with the Cardassians and the Breen. A year later, the ferengi become allies of the Dominion....
Hitler wins Second World War!
After the crushing defeat of the allied landing forces on the beaches of normandy, the Third Reich continued its reign of conquest and invaded England.
After an SS team takes out the Manhattan Project, the Third Reich becomes the first power to weild a nuclear weapon. The world soon falls to the Third Reich.
Skip forward to 2020 or so, and we find the Greater Third Reich launching ships to the Moon and to Mars. Another 50 to 100 years & interstellar travel is discovered, and using the Warp Drive, the Reich begins its conquest of outer space.
(Just an idea, it'll need some work though.)

I like the idea of a Third Reich Reality. It is actually one of the most logical parrallel universes. I think maybe the power of the Reich should still remain with an ascendant of Hitler, who had two children with Eva Braun. Rommel never got dismissed and remained in control of German forces throughout the war.
In the 24th century the Third Reich is ruled with an iron fist by Siegfried Hitler and the Raumwaffe (the extension of the Luftwaffe) is being let by Generalfeidmarshall Erwin Rommel der VI. The SS still exists and behind the scenes still exterminates 'embarresing and disturbing' elements of society. The evidence of the extermination of the Jews was completely obliterated and is still one of the most guarded secrets (in fear of a revolt). Some militaristic races like the Andorians have a relatively good position within the third reich and even the Vulcans are well respected. They are still more militant that our regular Vulcans.
I was just thinking of the top of my head now and just wanted to specify the idea a little.
Sounds good, also, if you applied the 'supermen' tech that created Khan, there's no reason the Third Reich couldn't be producing their own Genetically Superior soldiers ('A La Dominion), and culling desirable traits from other species, while in the meantime exterminating species seen as inferior or hostile.Quote:

Let's imagine a strange alternate reality : the Vulcans who reject Surak's teachings and leave Vulcan don't land on Romulus... but instead, after a rather long trip (not helped by any wormhole), on a backward M-Class planet.... Earth.
They soon discover that the local's lifestyle is rather consistent with their own; they ally with the various existing Empires of the time, and soon wars rage on Earth.
After a few centuries of wars, a unity emerges, and the Terran Empire turns toward the stars. Warp drive is achieved circa 1400 (although Earth now uses a different calendar, based on the arrival of the War Leaders, as the would-be Romulans are now known) and the Empire starts to spread. Alpha Centaury is discovered in the beginning of the 16th century, and invaded soon thereafter. Vulcan probes discover the threat of the Empire as they are getting closer to them, and they prepare for war. The clash occurs in during the 1600s, and is driven to a standoff. Afterwards, the Terran Empire invades other planets, or create alliances (notably with the Andorians), while the Vulcans find allies of their own (for instance with the peaceful but tough Remans).
This state of cold war keeps going, with skirmishes erupting on and on between the Terran Empire and the Vulcan Alliance. In the 22nd century, the Klingons discover both powers, and, after some battles with either of them, eventually ally with the Terran Empire to crush the Vulcan alliance. Soon, the Alliance is suffering setback after setback, and driven near extinction. Only the encounter of a new power, the Cardassians, who declare war to the Klingons, give the Vulcan Alliance some breathing space as the Klingons have to temporarily interrupt their alliance with the Terran Empire.
The Vulcan Alliance then forms a temporary alliance with the Cardassians, which turns into a full-fledged one when both powers realise this in the only way to resist the Klingon-Terran Empires.
The 24th century then sees a stand-off between the Terran Empire (led by Vulcans-Terran hybrids living on Earth) and its ally, the Klignons, against the Vulcan Alliance and its ally, the Cardassians.
And then a wormhole is discovered near the Cardassian protectorate of Bajor, while remote outposts of both powers are destroyed by an unknown force...
Well I'm a bit dry right now but maybe this could sparkle some ideas in some minds.

Only the encounter of a new power, the Cardassians, who declare war to the Klingons, give the Vulcan Alliance some breathing space as the Klingons have to temporarily interrupt their alliance with the Terran Empire.
The Vulcan Alliance then forms a temporary alliance with the Cardassians, which turns into a full-fledged one when both powers realise this in the only way to resist the Klingon-Terran Empires.
The 24th century then sees a stand-off between the Terran Empire (led by Vulcans-Terran hybrids living on Earth) and its ally, the Klignons, against the Vulcan Alliance and its ally, the Cardassians.
And then a wormhole is discovered near the Cardassian protectorate of Bajor, while remote outposts of both powers are destroyed by an unknown force...
Well I'm a bit dry right now but maybe this could sparkle some ideas in some minds.

Variation on a theme...
"TrExiles" (background idea based on the Marvel comic book "Exiles.")
Your players are all characters from different alternate universe timelines.
They have been "involuntarily recruited" from their various timelines at the point of death (real, apparent, or potential) by a not-completely known agency or individual (could be anything from Q to the Caretaker to the Guardian of Forever to Future Guy to Section 31 to a complete unknown.)
They are charged with performing tasks in the various alternate universes. Some will obviously have ramifications, some will not, some will seem to be "negative" acts, some will just seem weird.
Only the message computer given to the team leader knows what they are supposed to do in each world, and why, and when it's been accomplished. It won't necessarily tell your crew WHY their task is important or what it's effects may be.
Their reward for "improving" the other timelines will be that when they return to their "home" timeline, they will have avoided whatever situation resulted in their "death."
Of course, there might also be another set of jumpers with similar (or opposing, as the case may be) agendas... and whoever your crew is "working" for might not turn out to be the "good" guy...
Possibilities:
Make sure the T'plana'hath never detects the warp signature of "Herr" Cochrane's Valkyrie.
Kill the man who will become the Mirror Universe's "Tiberius" Kirk.
Prevent the meeting of Vulcan Overlord Sarek and "Mandy" Grayson, human servant girl.
Destroy the Tribble homeworld.
Prevent Praxis from exploding.
Make sure Praxis explodes.
Seal the Bajoran wormhole.
and so forth.

How about expanding on the Enterprise episode where the Xindi successfully deploy their weapon and destroy the Earth?
The Xindi weapon – accompanied by a number of combat vessels – entered the Sol system in 2154. They easily breached the Mars Defense Perimeter and destroyed the Earth despite the best efforts of Starfleet and the few non-human vessels in the vicinity. The Xindi followed their initial attack by destroying all of the known human colonies, including Luna, Mars, Alpha Centauri, and the rest.
The remnants of mankind – numbering only about 6,000 – regroup in the Tau Ceti Alpha star system but are discovered by the Xindi in 2166 and all but annihilated.
Once mankind is destroyed and the few hundred survivors scattered throughout the galaxy, the Xindi return to their own space. Within months their armistice collapses and the Xindi-Reptilians and Xindi-Insectoids break away, aggressively pursuing their own agendas despite the protestations of the Xindi-Primates, Sloths, and Aquatics.
Without the bonds brought by humanity, the Federation never forms. The Andorian Empire resumes its wars with the Vulcans, the Tellarites are conquered by the Klingons (who find themselves in a losing war with the Romulans in 2168), and the Suliban struggle in vain to circumvent the changes to the timeline inflicted by the Sphere Builders.
By 2175, the Alpha and Beta Quadrants are politically fractured. While the Vulcans remain fairly strong and technically advanced, their issues with Andoria have limited their influence. Qo'nos is occupied by Romulan ground forces and the twice-conquered Tellarites design ever-improving starships for their masters on Romulus. The primary power in the region is the Cardassian Union, which remains unified and strong. Using captured Klingon and Romulan technologies (gleaned from debris after massive space battles), Cardassian engineers have cloak-equipped warships capable of reaching warp 6.7 and have easily dominated the areas around the Cardassian system.
Small convoys of 2-3 ships and a few scores of humans roam the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, seeking anything that might give them an edge and allow them to survive to rebuild their race. Romulan, Klingon, and Cardassian forces ruthlessly hunt down rogue humans, as do various bounty hunters. The Vulcans and Andorians have both taken on the responsiblity of protecting the remnants of mankind whenever possible, though this, too, has led to conflict between the two powers.

Wow, that really sounds like a good story. You can even further develop it by using the duplicate enterprise as a vessel the shifting crew might encounter, still sore from being unable to stop the probe. This is really an alternate reality that could be explored further, thnx
