Seriously: I could indeed order from lots or online retailers, but what pains me is that only Decipher sends THAT fast.
Enough of my ranting :) I'll find a way. A slow one. :(
My FLGS's distributor couldn't ship it this week (unknown reasons. Maybe they're out?) but will try again next week. The store I shop at supports Trek products pretty strongly. They've got all the current Decipher product line on display and put new releases in a prominent location. I will continue to wait patiently. (GRR. ARRGH.):D
Okay, Leisure Games in the UK has "Starships." If my knowledge of geography is correct that's fairly close to France. ;) Why not give them a call/email and see about having them mail you a copy?
My FLGS has them and their primary distributor is Alliance. Ask your gaming store if they use Alliance and they should be able to get them ("Starships") easily enough.

I picked up at my FLGS (which is not inept....in fact, nowhere near that... :cool: ) today, and thumbed through it a couple of times already.

This is a fairly common practice: You reduce the price of your core books to get into the game in as many hands and to lower the barrier of entry. Think of them as loss leaders (while the company isn't actually losing money they are losing potential revenue; more of an opportunity cost).Quote:

Follow up supplements and materials are priced more in traditional ranges once they "get you hooked" in the game. In this case I don't see the big deal -- the Trek RPG contains everything you need to play (within reason) in two books that are competitively priced. "Starships," and RPGs in general, are a luxury product and not required. Buy it or don't buy it based on your individual tastes.
With that said I personally think $35 is a tad on the high side. I'd price the book at $30 to $32 but then I'm not running my own publishing company. :) Keep in mind I advocate the price of books in the RPG industry increasing -- they're a tremendous entertainment value.
The "too much" argument loses a lot of credibility when you factor in online retailers. There are several sites online where you can order "Starships" for ~$27. There's really no reason to pay full cover price on RPG products these days unless they're impulse buys or your FLGS doesn't have a discount system in place.
Got mine yesterday, and it is quite nice.
Somebody already noted some references to Ships of The Starfleet, but I also noticed some FASA propulsion types.
Or could these just be down to Starship Spotter,which I seem to recall used at least SotSF and early Trecknical references.
Starships is now listed on the decipher store page. I have therefore ordered my copy.
