Cool.

Since this is a time of war, the officers on the ship are given "provisional officer" status by Starfleet. So, if the ship eventually hires your characte, the master would be authorized to give him his commission back, pending reestablishing contact with Starfleet Command.

I would probably say this ship has one civilian-model holosuite. It's a bit smaller than a standard holodeck, but has enough computing power to do everything the crewmembers want. The crew is probably on a five-day rotational basis for use, limiting each person to a four-hour block of time based on watch schedule and first-come-first-serve signups. :)

Excellent on character creation (at least you've started). I have to put together the important NPCs, like the ship's master and communications officer. :) Minor stuff. ;)

Sorry for the delay in my character creation, but the recent news about a reunion tour of my all time favorite band Genesis (see this: http://www.genesis-music.com ) had me a little preoccupied the last days (ok, let's be honest: full time!) and under pressure. I simply had to make sure that I get seats for my girlfriend and me :D

Genesis back on tour is something I have wished for for a very long time.

Yeah, I know it sounds lame and they do it probably just for the money, but I have wanted to see this band live on stage for 15 years and now finally it might / will happen.

I plan to have Valak's stats and background info mostly ready by the week-end and will mail / post / share it as needed.

Right now, I'm a very happy gamer and music fan :p

My PC's species write-up is almost complete, I am in the process of editing the flavour text and correcting some shaky english sentences here and there. I'll probably be able to post the full version this week-end.
In the meantime, here's a short summary:

The Shaltszs will be a curious, hyper-active species, whose members love to wander and experiment new things, to the point that they have much trouble focusing on the same subject for a lengthy period of time: they always have to jump from one subject to another (being in their conversation or their tasks).
A nomadic species at heart, they don't like to stay in the same place for too long, and have a very dimmed notion of personal possession, being used to discard whatever they don't need anymore for others to use.
They have no exceptional abilities, except a few unusual quirks: hailing from a planet with a 12-hours long day, they tire twice as fast as other species, but need half the usual time to rest; and they are used to much brigther light sources than most humanoids.

While i plug away at my Antican, the news about our 'holo-shed' (futurama fans will get it) reminds me of one of the side ideas about my initial ideas for a hobby for my character: Holographic hunting.

Takeing cues from the Hirogen and elements of our own culture, I imagined species that enjoyed hunting would quickly take to holo-hunts, if nothing more that a good way to keep the skills up. As new worlds (and thier new lifeforms) were discovered, sensor logs were quickly turned over to holoprogramers to recreate the worlds for the growing holo-hunt fad.

Taking this a step further, as the technology improved, and as the general capabilities of FED science increased, it became possible to recreate extinct species for the hunt. I even took it to the extreme where simulations of possible species were created...maybe even mythological creatures rendered as prey for hunting parties.

I had this whole idea about not just the hunters being in on this hobby, but science officers from xenobiology, xenopalentology and maybe even archeologists, as well as engineers/holographers getting into the act.

Just a thought. (and, since he already hunts, I wouldnt really need a new skill selection...:rolleyes: )

LOL . . . your group crosses into the world throught the arch . . . ready for battle . . . their sences attempting to gather everything around them. Rough outlines of evergreen trees are scene through the darkness . . . with only the small area around your candle can be scene . . . then all of a sudden a strong gust of wind blew down from above, sending thin leaves towards your group like bullets . . . then all of a sudden the world begins to twirl around you . . . and omenous battle music begins to play . . .

Behind your group in a newly created battle field void of the terrain, encompassing only your group and the lone opponent flys a dragon keeping almost perfect station keeping. You turn around just to see a flame originate from its mouth, as it bask your group in heat and fire . . . above one of your allies a large red number appears above her head, and she falls . . . and above another, and another . . . each unprotected by their untreated cloth armor. However, you look up above yourself, and you see that somehow you moved a yard to your left and the word MISS appears.

:D Now who can guess the reference?

Ok, I finally decided to run my notes through the Character Builder 3.5:

It's pretty close to what I had, I still have to tweek it (change an edge to Skill Focus: Hunting, figure out why Unarmed Combat become 8, with 2 other Unarmed Combat 2's, etc), but at least I have a rough draft.

I'll get it off to the boss soon. How do you want it, anyway?

First, we can give him a Commendation that will reflect his Merchant Mariner award. Second, he can be 2nd Asst. Engineer with a promotion to make him a second officer.

Third, escape pod operations are generally part of the Communications Officer's duties, as he's the de facto Damage Control Officer, as well. But, perhaps your character can specialize as a damage control technical specialist (i.e., a damage control petty officer type :) ).

Same here. Time is not an issue (at least for me), so don't worry Sea Tyger.

Sorry to not have anything for you yet, but I got called back to work much earlier than expected, and on 3rd shift. (I'm becoming nocturnal).

I used that character generator, but need to fix a few things here and there and remember how i used my advancements, but I have my 'rough draft' to work with now.

Quick note: My IT department here at work has us going through a transition (moving machines from one network to another), and it has my access to my Yahoo account temporarily disabled. So, I'll be a little slower getting the read throughs done.

OK . . . I am almost finish with my ICON write up . . . taking longer then I thought since I have done most of it @ work, and work does seem to get in the way. Even when you're working when no one is around :cool:

James -- I've actually been taking classes for the last two semesters. :) I have five classes remaining to get my UC undergraduate education requirements completed before I can officially enroll at NPS (Naval Postgraduate School, where I work). I'm hoping to have the UC stuff done by Spring 08.

Cut -- Thanks, finals did go well. I got an A in my Art appreciation course, and I think I aced my microeconomics final. :) I've already enrolled in Spring classes (a Modern Literature course online and macroeconomics, both with professors I really like).

Now, I need to buckle down and get my final corrections done for my game manuscript and start shopping for a publisher! Anyone know someone who can do Renaissance-style art and drawings? :)

How is the former Fort Ord Campus anyways? I have never been.

Well, NPS and Fort Ord are two separate locations. The former home of the 7th Light Infantry has been closed for seven years or so, and now houses California State University, Monterey Bay (affectionately known as C-SCUM), as well as military housing and a Defense Manpower Data Center, and has been split up between the communities of Seaside and Marina.

NPS is on the grounds of the former Hotel Del Monte (an historic landmark), near downtown Monterey and about 4-5 miles from Fort Ord (now called Ord Military Community). The school moved to its current location (from Annapolis) in 1951 and began classes in 1952.

I thought you were going to school at that CSU on the former Ft. Ord grounds . . . believe it or not I knew that the Naval Postgraduate School and Fort Ord were seperate facilites. However, what I don't know are the distances between NPS and the Monterey Presideo where the Defense Language Institute is located. I always wanted to be posted there.

Oh and did you know that 7th ID has been reestablished as a National Guard MACOM and is now at Fort Carson, CO.

You know it was sad to see all of the nicest West Coast Army Post close down . . . now we're stuck with Fort Irwin, and Fort Lewis . . . oh and the downsized Sierra Army Depot.

Actually my brother did a two week active duty stint at Fort Hunter Liggett a couple months back, he's part of a Civil Affairs unit down here in San Diego. And I actually enjoy spending time down there . . . myself.

What I don't understand is why is it that no one sees Monterey as a viable capital for anything. I mean it did a decent job during the spanish era, I mean it's centrally located on the coast . . . has a decent harbor, and is surrounded by bountiful farmland.

Just to recap, Valak looks good, and Cpt's former lieutenant is good to go with the two extra advancements.

C5, the Shaltz look good overall, but I'm a bit concerned about the race's balance with only 8 picks of attribute adjustments and abilities. Perhaps a +1 Intellect or an additional +1 Agility would be in order. Everything else looks very good.

Thanks for your return. I thought I gave them 10 picks, but I hadn't my books at hand when I did the estimation. I'll see what I can change and mail you an updated version ASAP. I'm thinking maybe adding a couple of edges, since I was OK with the attribute adjustments as they were (if that's ok with you).
However, I'll be rather busy until the end of the week, so I'm not sure you'll have it before XMas :o

I'm working on the captain at the moment: Master James Alan Flaherty.

He's a third-generation merchant mariner and the 42-year-old great-grandson of the former Jamie Finney. Born in 2331 to Benjamin A. Flaherty (currently a commodore, commanding a fleet that runs along the Klingon border) and the former Eileen Komack, James entered the Merchant Marine Academy in 2349, graduating with honors in 2353. He achieved the rank of master in 2371, taking command of the PC ship that year.

Flaherty married the former Francoise Bonnet in 2356; they have two children. James, Jr., was born in 2359 and aspires to follow in the family's footsteps; Isabelle Marie was born in 2361 and is studying agricultural engineering in the family home outside St. Etienne.

Well we can name her Clipper Eclipse, after a Pan Am aircraft piloted by Gene Roddenberry, which crashed in Syria in 1947

We can name her Pacific Clipper, after the Boing 314, which circumnavigated the globe to return to safety in 1942.

We can name her William P. Frye, after the first US Merchant Marine vessel lost during World War I.

We can name her Mayaguez after the last US Merchant Marine Vessel to be involved in active conflict during the Vietnam War.

We can name her City of Rayville after the first US Merchant Marine Vessel lost during World War II.

We can name her Joseph Holt after the first US Merchant Marine Vessel to earn a US Navy Battle Star during the Pacific Campaign of World War II.

We can name her Ora Ellis after the last last Liberty Ship.

We can name her Mattson after John A Mattson who was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for resupplying the beleagered forces on Bataan.

Side notes:

For the record, I suscribe to the belief that Starfleet does not exactly mirror the United States Navy. There are similarities of naval tradition, but Starfleet is a much different entity and current Navy organization should not be used as a bible for its Starfleet counterpart.

That said, the Federation Merchant Marine is not exactly like the U.S. Maritime Service. The ties to Starfleet are looser than in the real world, and, despite the fact that the FMM falls under Starfleet jurisdiction in wartime, its ships operate more independently of the military than modern USNS vessels.

Also, there are no Starfleet Marines in MSTU*, the Akira is not a fighter carrier, and fighters do not exist in the modern sense of the word (I consider Peregrines escorts with a fanciful name, rather than a true "fighter").

Ah a subscriber of the big vessel combat model. Although it has its place, and "fighters" are vunerable mobile torpedo firing craft, I believe my views on the subject are very well known. However, we are playing in your world. So we shall live in it.

And yes, fighters, in the modern sense don't exist as all small craft in Star Trek. Instead small craft which are armed for combat, target capital ships, and fixed targets as well as other small craft. Therefore, they would be more like F/Bs then anything.
That has me wondering. If memory serves me, there have been no Bomber catagarized aircraft operated by the USN.

Nope, we have fighters, fighter/attack, attack, patrol and antisubmarine aircraft. F/A and A types are used for our strike missions.

Then I have to ask. Do you have Strike Shuttles or craft in your Star Trek Universe?
