I agree with you, Phantom about the two sexes and the social behavior. Four sexes would just be too improbable in so nearly humanoid a species IMO. The social behavior fits LUG canon and just makes sense for the Andorian society and environment.

Social Structure (or Why the Hades haven't we seen more of them on screen?)
We haven't been looking. I imagine that, in the early days of the Federation, crews of similar races were put together in ships.
For the clanish Andorians, this was good. Their social/family bonds require there to be a lot of them together for the comfort of all of them. The medical/dietary requirements just help the issue.
Concequently, there are as many Andorians in Star Fleet as anyone else. They're just clustered more than the everpresent Humans.
Plus, with the Andorian's more ... "Passionate and violent" streak, they're probably clustered in patrol cruisers, "escorts" and the like, rather than the human interest in seeing what's over the next rise, which makes them choose more exploratory type ships (Scouts and Explorers).
The Average Akira probably has quite a few, the Average Nebula, probably not so many, and Average Intrepid has none.
As a note, I picture Andorian Culture more pop culture Samurai like. Clan and family fealty, with warriors driven by honor to do what they are told.
In a way, like the Vulcans, they use a structured code to overcome their warlike nature. Unlike the Vulcans, who are really big into self-denial, er logic, the Andorians accept their martial nature and channel it into "service and loyalty and honor".

Segragation because your clan oriented? I don't buy it. There are several examples of clan oriented humans who have become efficent members in the military. They adopt a new clan. I know that TOS had a consttuiton class vessle that carried only Vulcans, but by the TNG era Iwould thinkt that more cooperatve and mulit environmental technologies would allow a more intergrated Fleet. I must differ with the opinion that Andorians are frequent or on par with any race in the Federation. I think of all the original member races only Humans are proliferant. That is to say that a race that only attempts to reproduce every seven years, and not always to conceptiontion, and a race that requires Four individuals to create a wedlock cannot sustain a population that could man, construct, and operate a structure like Starfleet. It is my opinion that the reason there are somany humans (baring that few andorians or vulcans do dramatic appearences on earth yet) is that humans just reproduce faster. In much older cultures with aggresive backgrounds such as the Andorians it seems reasonable that they instituted the foru marraige ritual to cut down on legitimate births. (this doesnt account for bastards births but there is a social norm that may have been established to reduce birth rate, and bastard birth might have already been considered bad form.) In a war like society resources are often wasted, and in the wake of all out war, more efficent and economic social instituions tend to form.

Where did this "segregation" idea come from? I originally said that for an Andorian to work at peak performance requires that at least a "family unit" be on board...which means at least 4 Andorians. I said nothing about Andorians being incapable of serveing on ships with mixed crews.

you make good points, though. Andorians shouldn't be as common as humans. The fact that Humans breed like bunnies is their special power. Every race has something.
Andorians are Stronger and Faster.
Vulcans are Smarter and Stronger and have Psionics and are Tougher, etc.
Klingons are Stronger and Tougher.
Betazoids are Psionic.
Trills have a mostly immortal slug in them, giving them way more skills and knowledge than they should.
Humans are baseline, but they produce lots of kids.
I wasn't refering to segregation, as much as having clusters of them together. And in the ships we as the TV audience aren't seeing.
I would think at least one family group would be minimum, and I'd bet that there would be more than that preferred.

As to other races, as long as the nutriants in the soil are similar I think it would sustain a human for awhile-just taste kind of strange.

I disagree that Andorians would be rare. I would actually expect a fairly sizeable output of progeny. In our campaign, they're almost as common as humans.
Why wouldn't we see them often (other than make-up & budget constraints?) Early Starfleet might have had trouble with their food requirements; figure they have pretty odd (by iron-based standards) requirements & it was too much hastle to integrate them early on...that plus their family social structure needs.
By the movie period we start seeing them more often in the background. Figure by this point they were perfecting food processors to be compatible for Andorians and other races.
I pretty much use S JOhn's Andorians; I like 'em. However, I like a few of the other ideas for their physiology that I've seen here.

With more than 50,000 clans (300 of them with seats on the council) only a handful (22 by my count) could be detailed in AtC. I've searched on line and here on the boards with no luck. Anyone ever develop their own clan for a character you created? Other than the clans listed in AtC, it seems no one has ever expanded on the clans.
How about developing your own religion/belief system?
I'm thinking of developing keth Vaath along with a belief system centered around nature and reverance of ones ancestors [shinto/ancestor worship influence--seems to fit the Andorians].
