In the pilot, the Galactica and the other 4 surviving Battlestars are at the peace conference when it turns out to be an ambush.
Adama realizes that the Cylons are only using fighters (which were resupplied from tankers), meaning they needed to have their Base Stars elsewhere. He then realizes that the Colony Worlds are unprotected, and decides to have Galactica withdraw to protect them.

It is at that point that Adama orders the Galactica to "light speed", and Tigh complains that it has been a long time since Galactica was pushed that fast.

Enemies you can't readily identify are more of a challenge. Escalating tension is the reason for Adama's confrontation -- to provide a way for them to learn about the humaniform Cylons (since Baltar sure wouldn't tell them). Yes, I agree, the humaniform Cylons provide dramatic tension.

However, adding to that the change to make the Cylons a product of man (rather than of aliens) makes the story too remeniscent of Terminator.
And, I agree with the highly biased reviewer on IGN who said that the Cylons lacked a clear motive to evolve toward a human form. Certainly an infiltrator model would be useful, but the dialogue suggest that the "infiltrators" are the new rulers, being more advanced than the older "centurions".
Never explained is both why the Cylons wish to eliminate the humans (except fearing revenge for their previous attempts to destroy the humans) or why the Cylons chose to evolve into that which they hate.

You seem to be the second person to have misunderstood my comments about the "newness" of the Galactica.

I had no problem with modern-looking interiors or exteriors, or anything like that. My problem is exclusively in their calling the Galactica 50 years old. IMO, one of the important aspects of the original show was that the ship was older than anyone alive. OLD. Modern, but old.
Kinda like the New Jersey would be if it stayed on active duty until 2050. :)

50 years isn't a problem, and sufficiently makes a ship old. They established that the war with the Cylons ended 40-ish years ago, IIRC. The battlestars were built specifically to fight the cylons. A 50-year-old ship is fine. This is a reimagination, not the original, so it doesn't have to be older than anyone alive. Given that most of our carriers are retired after about 40 years of service, I could easily relate to her age (the oldest active carrier in US Navy service is the Kitty Hawk at 42 years old, and about seven months older than the Enterprise, the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier).

Did anyone else notice Serenity from Firefly fly by out the window of the doctor's office on Caprica at the beginning of part one? I guess they used the same effects shop for their external spaceship stuff. The camera work is the same style as Firefly too.

I don't recall ever hearing Tigh complain at that point. I could be wrong, but I seriously don't remember it ever.

Questor, the Cylon Alliance homepage has an entire section devoted to the new miniseries; Click here to go straight to the BSG 2003 page. It has pics not only of the new CYlons but the new ships as well. BTW check out the forums as well; they have had a LOT of discussions relating to the new series.

You're welcome, Questor. Yes, they did make a LOT of changes to the Cylons.

BTW the site also has a history of the aborted Bryan Singer/Tom Desanto BSG continuation project as well; its an interesting look at what might have been because many fans were excited at this project.

Thanks for that Cylon Alliance web site. It's very interesting. The site claims most BSG fans were disappointed in the new mini-series but new viewers seemed to like it. It's hard to know whether that statement is true or not, but I do know that I'm a fan of the old BSG and do like the new BSG almost equally.

BTW, wasn't the original BSG pilot also released in the theaters? I distinctly remember going to the movies and seeing BSG "in sensaround", which was a popular gimmick back in the late 70's. I also remember seeing it on TV.

They where aired on TV in Germany (I think it was in 1982, god...I´m feeling old :( ).

BUT only the Pilot and the double Episode with the Pegasus (sorry, don´t know the name at the moment.....I´m getting old :D ) where ever aired on TV.

The BSG pilot was originally shown in theaters in Canada and Europe.
I'm guessing summer of 78, since it was on ABC in the US in September 1978. The theatrical version was only slightly different: the only thing I've heard of is that Baltar is killed in the original. When doing it as a series, Glen Larson like the character (and esp. John Colicos' portrayal) and wanted to keep him around, so he cut the excecution scene.

Yes I remember the Scene, where Baltar was killed in front of the Cylon Emperor....I always wondered if the Cylons replaced him with a "Human-looking" Cylon.
