If another company takes over Trek, and publishes to their own system, I will probably stay with Coda unless I am significantly impressed with the new system, or its one I already know, or, down the road, the company begins publishing *really cool* material.
If I were to abandon Coda, it would probably be in favor of HERO, at this point. Maybe GURPS, but I'm unlikely to start new GURPS campaigns until I see if Fourth edition fixes some broken stuff, doesn't break any new stuff, and is well supported.
As Don has stated, the LA studio - which employed the ex-LUG group - was liquidated in its entirety back in January. There is no one left to write DecipherTrek material; what they've got in their PC or Mac files right now - Worlds, Blood and Honor, Glass Darkly, etc. - is all Decipher has left to publish, and all it will ever have.Quote:

Hasn't all the LUG staff left Decipher? Decipher might not be able to put out materal of the same quality as the stuff already written.
Also, as Don's mentioned on previous threads (and here), Decipher wants out of the RPG publishing game; yes, they made money, but obviously not enough to warrant their actually taking the time and effort to manage the division like they actually cared about it. In a Best of All Possible Worlds scenario, the absolute most we can hope for at this point is that a third-party publisher, whom Decipher has/is/will approach, will see fit to take on the risk of releasing these works under their banner.
As Ineti has indicated from his vantage point as a playtester, the chances of the above situation playing out are perilously slim to begin with, and growing more distant with every day that passes. As I - and many others - on this thread/site have stated, we better resign ourselves to the fact that what Decipher's put out so far is all they're ever going to put out. Right now, essentially, we're just waiting for the heroic-measure life support efforts to putter out before officially pulling the sheet over the corpse and starting our work again... :)
So with Decipher shopping the liscesne around to a third party game company for an RPG line with something like ayear left to go.
Not good.
Even if somone wants to write TREK products for a year, there aren't many RPG companies around anymore who might be able to pick it up.
Steve Jackson might be interested in doing GURPS: STAR TREK, but not CODA.
Steve Long might do it since he cowrote CODA. I doubt if HERO GAMES has that kind of money.
WoTC has the cash, but no inclination to print non-D20 RPG stuff anymore.
The rest of the field just doesn't have much of a chance of having the kind of cash that a Vaicom/Paramount liscene would require. Not for a year, and not for someone elses game rules.
Wonder how the TREK RPG is doing in the Mirror universe? :rolleyes:
If it doesn't get picked up, chances are there won't be another Trek RPG for quite awhile, IMHO. Though, I wouldn't mind if this is the last Trek RPG.

When I did work for Decipher, and WotC, and LUG, people often made shit up. You're not the first. Now that I'm no longer professionally involved with these companies, I can call people like you out. And, typically, the response is "I don't have to tell you anything!" I don't think anyone's surprised.
To the people on this board who continue to support the game and hope for new products; those of us who worked on the previous editions are all proud our work fostered such interest in you. I certainly won't be working on a Trek game professionally again, but someone will and if their customers are as cool as you guys always have been, they'll be very happy.

Everywhere I see you on this board you're posting "information" you've obviously pulled out of your backside or otherwise being a negative jackass. When one of the many individuals who frequent these boards who _is_ on the "inside" calls you on it, you get defensive.
I've been on these boards a long time, years in fact. Before the real world intruded and my military duties took me away from my keyboard I was in the top 5 most frequent posters on this board. There are others who've been here longer than I have and those who have contributed much more. There are professionals from the gaming industry here who put forth the effort to give us these products and who are impacted far more by these Decipher problems than we are... we only are missing out on game products, they are missing out on paychecks. Last and most important there's Owen who provides this space out of the goodness of his heart.

Like countless others here, I mourned the dissolution of Last Unicorn and hoped for the best with Decipher. It seems that the details on Decipher's managerial/administrative conduct keep getting uglier the longer the situation drags on, but we know the current debacle wasn't for a lack of effort on the LUG crew's part.
It's truly unfortunate that we'll likely never see that grouping of creative intellects again. It was a brief, shining moment...but that's not to say that what follows, our work or not, can't be just as good, or maybe even better. :)
And for calguard66: Oh yeah, I remember the Quacker. If I recall correctly, it was back in - oh, late '00 when that particular social deviant cropped up. The ramblings, the subliminated pathological chants, the "just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean you're not out to get me" lines...the wonder isn't that Don and the moderators jumped on him like a Panzer division and shut him down; the wonder is that he lasted as long as he did.
I remember I came very close to signing on during that period, wanting to post a summation of the whole experience called "The Ultimate Quacker". It was going to be about this mad scientist who creates the ultimate Web site - it's insane, of course, but no one knows that at first - and it then proceeds to flame anyone who comes in contact with it. The parody would have ended with Captain Don Mappin stating, "The Red Quacker must be destroyed." Said mad scientist turns to him, voice tembling, and sobs, "Destroyed, Mappin? No, look what we've done - your mighty role-playing games, four toys to be crushed as we choose!" The nerve pinch by second-in-command Oulton and the logical figure eight that convinces the site to delete itself follows.
It would have been fun. I wonder what rehabilitation colony ol' Red has gotten himself assigned to since then...:)

While I am one who loves to debate all aspects of TREK (inluding that topic which is forbittden- SFM), I think that this argument over who knew what inside info or not has gotten out of hand.
Swearing, insulting each ofther and accusing people of lying, drawing references to past "problem members" and putting up images designed to annoy is not what this topic is supposed to be about. I don't believe it is what Don wants on his board either, although I certainly can't speak for him.
Maybe Vanguard was out of line or making stuff up. Maybe. But at least he is new to the boards.
What excuse do the long time members of this forum have?
How 'bout we IDIC this and get back on to the topic before the Organians (moderators) show up and tell us to play nice.

The future of Trek RPGs.
I've actually compiled "intro timelines" for each of the "modern" Trek series. Did have a question though, which means I'll have to modify them dependent on the answer...
Is it generally accepted that a TNG/DS9/Voyager season begins and ends with the beginning of a new year? Reason I ask is that I based my timeline on a VERY detailed Trek timeline online, but it doesn't hold to that (he has TNG Season 1 taking place between Sept. 2363 and July 2364, I think).

Do we need Decipher? Never did before why should I start now?
Can we make our own stuff? Of course we can, and we do on a regular basis. The legality of it is the question.
Can we buy the license? Not me brother, that is way out of my price range. Why would we want to? Trek was always at its' best when the fans were amking stuff and not caring for what Paramount/Viaccom thought. Sure they can sue the pants off you, but that is the risk you take :)
Either way, I love CODA, it is everything I ever wanted from a Star Trek game. (Though ICON was pretty good too). I will keep playing it and not worry about what Decipher is doing, cause with the core books I am set for decades :)

That's just speculation at this point. Green Ronin has an arrangement with Games Workshop's new RPG imprint, Black Industries, to create the new Warhammer RPG. Since Green Ronin's press release mentioned they'd be working on ''other major licenses" as well, and since Games Workshop already has a LOTR license in place (due to their miniatures game) the speculation is that they'd do a LOTR game based on the same ruleset as the new Warhammer.
Just internet speculation at this point, though. Maybe we'll hear something at Origins or GenCon.

You know, It seems to me as though the RPG industry is going through the same sort of really nasty slump that comics went through a few years ago. I don't know if its oversaturation of the market, a sag in interest due to new technologies (better computer games, and the #$%@ing card games -- sorry, I just hate card games), or just the fact that the main demographic group is getting older and has less time to stay up all night gaming.
I'm just rambling. It's just a depressing thought, to imagine that the entire gaming world is on a downhill slide and I can't see the bottom.

As for Berman being better than Jackon? Can anyone really make such a comparison? Lucas could be argued in recent years, perhaps, but Berman's never made his 'A New Hope' yet, either. :)
