Yes, they have planned for a production plant outside of Ft. Benning.
I think it's mainly due to the overweight OICW that was the initially planned M16 replacement.
I think it's a positive thing that we are looking forward . . . but it's unfortunate that we have had to turn to a foreign company to develop it.
As for us gunfreaks out here, yes we have known about XM8 for some time now.
i have seen it on Mail Call about a month or 2 ago but then i forgot about it and just recently redescovered it while doing some research on Land warier system
(wanted to see if there any moer news about its development)

Does that mean they're scrapping the OICW?
Is it just me. . . or do those designs look like compression phaser rifles ? They also remind me of the design of some of the Super-Soakers I've seen. :D
i found somewhere that xm8 is kinetic part of OICW and that OICW is so late behind they want to use some of the research benefites nowQuote:

It does indeed look like the XM8 as with the Assault Weapon segment of the OICW is derived from the G36. Which seems to be doing OK for itself.
The XM8 is part of the Army‘s effort to perfect an over-and-under style weapon, known as the XM29, developed by Alliant Techsystems and H&K. It fires special air-bursting projectiles and standard 5.56mm ammunition. But the XM29 still is too heavy and unwieldy for Army requirements. Instead of scrapping the XM29, the Army decided to perfect each of XM29‘s components separately, so soldiers can take advantage of new technology sooner. The parts would be brought back together when lighter materials become available. The XM8 is one of those components.

...and the G36 is a rockin piece of equipment. An excellent platform to create this weapon on.
the xm8 has been going through trials for some time..it is nearing the final testing..
there are 2 'experimental' comapanys already equipped with this weapon..
some may have noticed the very recent bid for a replacement weapon has gone out, this is typical it doesnt mean anythings wrong with the xm8.
the oicw is gone..gone..gone.. useless P.O.S..
since its cancellation it has been seperated into two different weapon systems the xm8 and the xm25..
the xm25 is using the airburst munition developed for the 29..why waste it?
another fine and fun weapon system in the end phase in testing for the gun freaks is the xm109..
the hedp gives ya a fuzzy when you hit the target with it..
xm109 looks like conversion of current barret rifle
btw we even have something new for special forses

there is a conversion package to covert the 107 to a 109..
shes an interesting system..the SCAR-H is the most loved of series..a small compact heavy hitter in cqb..the lights just another 'oh boy another one..
shes does have one operating weakness in the left/right config being a debris magnet -shes not sandbox friendly- only a problem for prolonged periods, nothing too troublesome.
shes also not an armorers friend in customizing either.. but its nothing too big a deal.
Looks really nice. I just hope that all of the "neat" features don't make it a bear to handle in the field. Weren't there a lot of problems with the M-16 when it was first put into service?
the political pressures to get the m-16 aside..
it didn't go through the rigorous testing that systems go through nowadays..

The M16A2 is actually pretty reliable, if you keep it clean. Still, I'd rather put my life in the graces of a G36 or AUG (except for that friggin' mag release; could it get less ergonomic?) My reaction is much the same with the Beretta M9; I'd rather trust myself to a Kimber .45, an H&K USP in the same, or a Walther P99 in .40.
"P.O.S."???
P.O.S = Piece Of [censored]
AUG.. ugh..
sidearms.. people have various preferences on what they like..
mines mission specific..
I find it shoots great, and the bullpup makes it much easier to use in house-clearing than an M16. But that damned mag release is awful.Quote:

the mag release is a issue this weapon has had for some time..
the scar series is far better for cgb than the steyr..
heck i'd radther have the 249short -para to the rest- in cq than the aug,or the m16-
