On Screen: Another TNG Movie?

Just found that article about a possible new TNG movie:

I would love to see another movie with the TNG cast, if only to give them a memorable farewell. I always very much liked ST VI and how it dealt with the original cast and hope they might do something like that with Picard's crew - this time, please, take a director who has at least seen a Star Trek episode before and does not cut scenes from a movie which are essential to the story, according to himself :(

I dunno if I care really. The TNG crew is not aging well....and I don't mean the actors.

I would love one if for no other reason than Nemesis was not their finest hour: They need a better movie to end the series on!

I think it's also telling that Stewart, who's said on several occasions he's sick to death of TNG would actually resurect his role to make a better movie than Nemesis! Kind of tells you what he thought of it :D

Well, I'd go see it because it's a Trek movie. But I'd really prefer the TNG crew to stay out in the pasture. I'd rather see a post-war DS9 film or maybe a Riker on the Titan film, if not on the big screen, then maybe a movie-of-the-week type thing. Doubt that'll happen though. :(

I think another NG film would be nice. I agree that a STVI style 'goodbye' would be best, since we have yet to have any kind of 'formal' send off of the NG crew: "All Good Things" was great, but was basicly a Picard episode, with some future sneak peaks in for good measure; and "Nemisis".....well I think that one speaks for itself.

So, the question is, what would the new movie be about? Come on, you armchair producers....get out there and make a movie! :D

I'd love for this to happen. Didn't think too highly of ST-"Nemesis".
"Nemesis" wasn't a good closure to a great series in my eyes though it has had some interesting moments and included the Romulans for real in a movie for the first time, what I personally liked.

I think that they probably shouldn't do another heavy-on action movie like "Nemesis" or "First Contact" just to attract some more people to the cinema.

I mean it's called Star -Trek- not -War- anyway :D

Don't get me wrong, I liked FC and it was a "neccesary" movie in the series, but I think we have seen enough war stories in DS9 and "Nemesis" lately and should go back to something more classic, more "Trekish" kind of thing.

Like a moral dilemma, a galaxy threatening mystery and/or time travel.
(OK, probably not time travel "again" :) )
They might even bring in Q again or something.

Most of all I'd like to see some sort of accaptable (open) ending but not something that results in a downright massacre of the TNG crew to close that series for ever. Then things better should stay the way they are right now.

BTW: What are the latest rumors about the other actors interests in another movie?
I seem to remember that Spiner and Stewart had another idea how to pick up after "Nemesis" and continue the story.

And would they get all the people on board once again?

Bryan Singer recently said he was interested in helming a Trek film. If it was him directing this, I'd be interested.

Troi and Riker would lvoe to do another movie they said and the latest about Geordi was that he still very much likes Trek, so I guess he would join in as well. Don't know about Worf of Crusher though.

REG you misunderstood me here. What I meant wasn't neccesarily a continuing of the "Nemesis" story ark but a new adventure set in the series as a whole. :p

So, what you should have posted was "a whole new TNG story," not "pick up after Nemesis and continue the story."

Well if I could wish for a Trek movie, it would be a movie that doesn't follow the usual scheme "Great big villain wants to destroy Earth/an innocent planet/the Enterprise/the Galaxy but is thankfully destroyed in the end" that almost every Trek movie followed so far.
Come on, Trek wasn't always about angry aliens wanting to destroy something until the Enterprise crew manages to destroy them instead. So, any scenario unlike that would be welcome.

Anyway, I'd love a movie that would not be entirely TNG. Not necessarily a cross over with the whole crew of every other series, but having a few members of other casts (and not like Janeway's cameo in Nemesis) would be nice.

I wouldn't mind either picking up where Nemesis left - maybe with an alliance with Romulus as a background (uh - unless it becomes "Star Trek VI with Romulans instead of Klingons"), a possible cameo from Spock, a Section 31 subplot somewhere...

Oh well. I guess it will probably turn out being "the whole TNG cast is again reunited without any explanation whatsoever and has to fight an evil something that wants to destroy some stuff" again :rolleyes:

It had to be said that the ending of the last film makes it somewhat awkward to bring them back together realistically! Worf was not too problematic.. but Riker and Troi.. a new team on a new starship.. still it could be interesting to have a sort of 'Sulu flies in to the rescue' motif, with Riker :D

I don't honestly believe that anyone other than Patrick stuart has the gravitas to pull of a movie, as captain. I am not sure I would be able to watch a DS9, Voyager or Enterprise Movie without the cringomiter needle going through the roof :)

But, the crew is even more fractured than in STII or VI. Data is dead, and B4 is having problems assimilating his memories. It leaves the possibility open that B4 can "replace" Data, but it also allows Brent Spiner to opt out of the movie without real character difficulties. The Rikers are on the Titan (and, as someone else mentioned, could come "to the rescue"...or, the Enterprise could come to their rescue as a plot device to bring the two crews together for the main plot). Geordi, Beverly and Jean-Luc are really the only members of the original who remain on the Enterprise (Worf's last startrek.com entry mentions only that he is the Starfleet Ambassador to Qo'noS, and Nemesis didn't really contradict that, IIRC).

So, it would be more difficult to bring the cast together in this case, unless you have the Enterprise, the Titan, and whatever Klingon ship Worf can "borrow." Another option is to have it take place in Klingon space, so the ambassador can be involved with less plot manipulation.

Anyway, I'm rambling at this point... ;)

Didn't Beverly head back to her TNG Season 2 posting at Starfleet Medical at the end of Nemesis?

And shouldn't Geordi be moving on up the command ranks soon, so that he can become captain like he was shown to be in "Timeless?"

I'd rather not. What's done is done. Your asking that is like asking to re-do Star Trek V.

And though I may be flamed, but I prefer a greater ensemble cast of Trek characters, not just TNG. If they want to bring in the Enterprise cast in a temporal-related story (one that actually make sense and devoid of Braga's crap), so be it. Have Sisko the Prophet worked on two different time periods, fighting an antagonist who is known as the Dark Prophet, a being born of a prophet and a pah-wraith.

Hmm, let think.. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO that sounds worse than a Berman Bragga plot! :D

No, I do not think this would work. Its only two hours and we've seen what a mix of crews does to a story in "Theses are the Voyages". I think the TNG crew deserves a grand send-off like the TOS-crew had and I think Frakes should do it. I like ST VIII and IX and since he is part of it, he knows Trek and that crew.

Actually given Brian Singer is probably one of the few directors I'd be happy to see take the helm. And his interest might be one of the only things that might get such a movie made.

I don't know. I did not like the X-Men movies at all - which may be because I am no great fan of comics, though. On the other hand he knows Trek - he had a guest role in Nemesis. ;)
But I think he is too inexperienced for such an undertaking and has too few involvement with Trek. I would like an insider do it. But taking a look at your newse production, Cpt., why don't you do it ? :D

The best Trek movie out of all of them was directed by a man who had never watched Star Trek and knew nothing about the franchise going into it. And yet, by paying attention to what was there uinstead of trying to make his own fannish contribution, he was able to not only remain true to the spirit of the franchise, but also to make a great movie.

Insiders gave us things like Star Trek V, Insurrection, and the first three seasons of Enterprise.

With that in mind, which sounds like a better idea?

Singer's a pretty experienced director, and a hot property in Hollywood though. If anything is likely to make them sit up and listen, it's the idea that someone with a proven track record, who is in high demand as a director, and whose movies are big earners, wants to work with them.

Sadly, that isn't me. ;) But it is Singer.

Singer, as a fan and as a talented director, could bring alot to the table, despite earlier statements about how insiders tend to give us fannish contributions.

Once again, I think that the director is just one peice of the puzzle. You need a good, perhaps even great story. I'm probably one of the biggest fanboys you'll even meet, and even I know that sifting through the entire mythos and making something that will appeal only to fans is dooming the project.

Look at First Contact: That is the anti-Trek Trek movie: You don't really need to know about the federation, warp mechanics, alien religions or which ensign was turned into what geometric shape and crushed by Andromedans.

Basicly, the whole movie is a mesh between the Terminator films (time travel to fulfill/prevent one's destiny), and a zombie horror movie (getting away from the enemy as they slowly fill their ranks with your former allies). I know people who won't watch a second of any trek series, or movie, except for that one.

What I'm tryin to say here is IF they made another Trek movie, it's gonna have to be some kinda story that will appeal to the mass audience: I mayself would love a movie with a Gorn/Tholian/Fed allience against extra-dimentional invaders, but I know in my heart that it wouldn't work. (unless it's written like ID4 or LotR.... :rolleyes: )

Yes I have to agree with you there.. The last thing they really want to do is do a horribly complext startrek story.. They need something simple, easy to follow and probably involving shooting BUT it does REALLY not want to suck as badly as Nemesis! That is reducing trek the wrong way!

I would rather Brian Singer did it, but yes, sadly because of the property.. I can imagine they will go either one of two ways.. Either even more reductive "We need more guns, less plot, lose that prime directive crap!" or they will try TOO hard to make it treky :S

I completely agree, and anyone who does come in to work on such a script needs to understand that. That said, you can put in little touchs for the fans, but you need to keep them subtle so they don't turn off the general audience.

Well, Wrath had the return of a villian from TOS, Khan, who's existance it turns out is very important to the entire mythos. (Eugenics war to WWIII, ban on genetic engineering, then the Augment incident, which lead to 'flat forheaded' Klingons, which slowed their empires advance, which kept Earth from becoming a vassal state. Oh and the same tech gave DS9 it's Chief Medical officer.) So it is partially anti-Trek.

But yeah, I guess in a way, STIV is an Anti-Trek movie; most of the Federation stuff could be replaced (guys from the future, friendly aliens or some such replacing it) and it would still be a great movie.

I have to agree here : I watched TWOK with very little knowlede of the Trekverse, and missed a lot of tiny details that, adding up, took part of the interest of the movie away for me (this probably explaining the fact that I was never able to understand why this movie is supposed to be so good).

OTOH, I agree that TVH and FC can be seen without knowing too much of the background (of course, one might miss the interest of scenes like the one with Spock and his mother at the beginning of TVH, or how becoming part human can mean so much for Data in FC, but they are IMHO less important than fully understanding the nature of Khan's relationship to Kirk).

The tiny details are minor, like watching an episode of TOS where Kirk was accused of killing a former rival classmate, only to find that the classmate actually faked his death.

The movie stand good on its own because it touched upon (1) getting old, (2) an obsessed villain -- so very Shakespearean, and (3) the Das Boot style combat between two ships that we don't get to see prior to the film. The movie also stirred a controversy because it killed Mr. Spock.

The Trek movies which are good are pretty much good because they are heavy on plot, where you don't need to know much about the universe BUT there's a whole mess of stuff for fans to eat up.

The Wrath of Khan was extremelly bold and had emotional involvement. If you are to compare, for example Spocks death in The TWoK and Data's in Nemesis it goes to show how dumed down that film really was.. Yes you can, retrospectivelly, look back on TWoK, having seen The Search For Spock, and go yes: I can see where they were going here, but that's only because TSFS added odd bits of detail, like Spock saying 'Remember'. I have no idea on the actual writers intentions in TWoK but it could have gone either way.. In Nemesis it's like they are holding up a sign and going DATA IS NOT REALLY DEAD, SEE YOU IN THE NEXT EPISODE under our noses throughout the end of the film. It therefore removed the emotional impact, and imediatelly made me think.. Ripoff!

I think Reg you hit the button when you said 'it caused controversy' - which translates to gnashing and wailing of teeth, back in the 80's.. Lets compare that to the fan uproar at killing off Data.. no wait.. there was none!

I won't disagree with the fact that Nemesis looks like a cheap copy of TWOK (although I rather liked this movie and am not a huge fan of its model), but as far as fan reactions are concerned, I think that things were quite different for Nemesis... for one thing, most of Nemesis script was already known around 6 months before the movie aired, effectively killing most of the effect of surprise, added to the fact that most fans were already very critical of the staff, to put it mildly.
Plus, the TNG crew already had three movies behind it when Nemesis came, instead of the one movie before TWOK. I don't know for instance if Kirk's death in STVII generated as much uproar (apart from the way he met his end in the movie...)

Anyway, back on topic, I think that a Star Trek movie now suffers from the "geek label" that is apparently stuck to the franchise as far as the average viewer is concerned.
In order to attract some audience, a Trek movie would have to be quite innovative... which sadly is often mixed with "adding lotsa explosions, FX and chicks" as far as some execs are concerned...

Not a whole lotta under-40 chicks in some of the recent Trek films, unless you count the Borg Queen in FIRST CONTACT (so far the only TNG film I can tolerate watching).
