Role Playing Journals
I'm trying to get back into the FASA Star Trek Universe by running a game set in 2288. As part of every game I run, I write extensive role-playing journals. For my recent games of Call of Cthulhu I was able to post them at Yog-Sothoth.com in the journal section but would like a place to post the Star Trek game I'm now running.
Any suggestions?
-
Okay, if anyone is interested — I started a myspace account as part of a story I'm writing for the paper I work for. I blogged the first journal of my recent game. If anyone is interested it can be found (if I did it right) at:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
I'd love to hear any feedback. Thanks.
-
Hi
Nice work. I also enjoyed reading the Space 1889 journal, another game I was very fond of.
Renny
-
Thank you. I also have the journal at Yog-Sothoth with Call of Cthulhu journals. It's at:
http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.p...hat=Max_Writer
I'll post here again when I add to the Star Trek ones. Or any of them.

I believe there was discussion about setting up a journal subforum, but I beleive that most moderators think that the Narrator's subforum is the best area for them.
-
I’ve recently posted the journal of the latest Star Trek game at:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
If anyone is interested.
Characters are:
• Lt. Palishar (Andorian Helmsman) — Adam Frager
• Lt. Commander Christofer Wolfe (Chief Engineer) — Aaron Frager
• Lt. Commander Charles de Winter (Security Chief) — Chad Wonderly
• Lt. (j.g.) Brevian Howard (Chief Science Officer) — DJ
• Lance Corporal L’Avatt (Andorian Marine) — Steve
• Chief Petty Officer Alex Knight (Security man) —*Austin
They’re aboard the U.S.S. Alert, a Ranger Class Scout.

We played Call of Cthulhu last weekend and the role-playing journal entry for it may be found at:
http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.p...hat=Max_Writer
The three characters (Liam Smith, detective; Chip Mathers, veteran and bounty hunter; and Benjamin Willows, museum curator) have tromped into the outback in "City Beneath the Sands" from Terror Australis.
This one has numerous spoilers and not one sanity check for the first part of the adventure.
-
Ran a short playtest of Traveller 2300 this past weekend. The journal entry can be found here:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
Characters were Charles Willis and Hagen Von Seinstrom.
-
I really liked the Star Trek journals. Good writing, interesting puzzle. Are you going to have more adventures or was this a one-shot game? You managed to accomplish a whole lot! I was under the impression these were just short evening games yet it took me days to read the two Trek posts (when I'm not busy at work).
-
Thanks for the interest. So few people reply to these posts.
I plan on running again though sometimes it's like pulling teeth to get people to play. I'm hoping to run ST in February next. We usually play for about six hours or so though if the players get into it, it goes longer. The next adventure I plan on running is called Safari in Scarlet or Safari in Violet (I can never remember) from an old Stardate Magazine. Probably a bit more action on that one.
I'll continue using the U.S.S. Alert and her crew. I have a rough idea for a campaign set it 2288 that leads to the Fifth Man/Kzin War.
I'm actually supposed to play some D&D this weekend (as opposed to running). The guy running has run for me only once before but I had a history all set up for my character. It's a Forgotten Realms game and I'm playing a gnome wizard from Lantan called Professor Beemish. You can find a preview post with his history here:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
Tomorrow or the next day I'll post the journal of the only game I played with Professor Beemish to date (almost three years ago). Next week I'll post the journal of the game this weekend. Then another Call of Cthulhu game is set for Jan. 26.
-
Added the first Professor Beemish journal entry to the blog today:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
-
"Professor Beemish and the Mystery of the Plundered Tomb" has been added to my blog at:
http://www.myspace.com/max_writer
The gnome wizard and his adventures in the Forgotten Realms might continue. He survived and we all had a good time.
-
For anyone interested, I've posted the role playing journal for the most recent Call of Cthulhu game: City Beneath the Sand. It's at:
http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.p...hat=Max_Writer
Characters are:
Ellit Macy (dilletante)
Alan Knight (bartender)
Professor Johanson (professor of archaeology)
Benjamin Willows (Curator of the Miskatonic University Exhibit Museum)
Chip Mathers (bounty hunter)
Liam Smith (private investigator)
Pretty good game.
Exploration was kind of glossed over in an attempt to find the villain but they still saw more than they probably wanted. I especially liked the role-playing when Professor's Cowles, Dodge, and Johanson saw the Titan Horror and were not able to describe it until Willows threatened to go look himself and none of them wanted him see the horror they had seen. Kakakatak was pretty cool too.
Hopefully, I'll get to run Star Trek next month.
-
I actually got to play the D20 Star Wars game we haven't played since 2004. Today I posted my character's history on my blog at:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
Just for a little background. I'll post the RPG journal for the game tomorrow (hopefully). Hey! It's a shorter one this time.

Star Wars Role Playing Game (d20).
Got the role playing journal for the game I played in this past week written (note: played, not ran). It's at:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
Hope anyone interested enjoys it.

On March 8, I ran an old-school AD&D (first Edition) game to commemorate and celebrate the life of Gary Gygax. I ran three people through The Keep on the Borderlands and we all had a great time. I read ‘The Empty Chair: Eulogy of a Gamer’, an empty chair was put aside to commemorate Gary and we all had a small glass of scotch (neat) and toasted the man who had filled our lives with so much fun. It was a great time and playing the old editions brought back so many fun memories.
Here is the role-playing journal of the game:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
-
Max_Writer, do you also post at Dragonsfoot? Someone also played KotB in AD&D to remember Gary, as you described. I suppose it wasn't a unique event, but I wondered if you also visit the two boards I do.
-
Alex,
I post several places but not Dragonsfoot. I'm Max_Writer everywhere I am on the internet I think. I also posted this same thing at boards at kenzerco.com, yog.sothoth.com, shoggoth.com, deadgentlemenproductions.com, a local comic-book store's forum, usshathaway.com, and usstamerlane.com.
I think I was the first to post the idea on the kenzer boards though I could be mistaken.

I'm envious that you get so many opportunities to run RPG adventures, regardless of the setting.
I'm a player in a local D&D group. It's not bad but we can only meet once every 2 weeks or so. But I miss being a GM.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find any local players for the games I like to play: Gamma World, Star Trek, Star Drive & Dark Matter. I do have one player for some of these games but he lives out of town & only visits occasionally.
-
This will make you really jealous then. A friend has set up a mini-convention for this weekend. He even made people register for games and such though it is all among friends. Calling it CaesarCon (since it's taking place during the Ides of March), he might open it to anyone next year.
Tonight is Texas Hold-Em, tomorrow in session one, I run Greyhawk: Wars and he runs Betrayal at House on the Hill; in session Two Saturday, I'm running Call of C'thulhu (Spirits Over Arkham) and another guy is running a game of Aberrant; in session three, a guy is running a Forgotten Realms Game. Sunday is a single session with the guy who set up the thing running the first adventure of Age of Worms.
Sounds like the games you like to play would be a blast. Once CaesarCon is over, I'm going to try to run more often.
-
Spoilers
I ran ‘Spirits Over Arkham’ by Terry White at a tiny little convention a friend set up this past weekend. The journal entry can be found here:
http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.p...hat=Max_Writer
The characters were (in order of appearance):
Bionka Weathersby (writer)
Harold Fisk (treasure hunter)
Father Gerald Webber (Catholic priest)
Jacob Silverman (archeologist)
Stephanos Covenant (Agency Detective)
and [replacing the character who gets killed ...]
Jebediah Hook (farm hand)
Those playing Bionka, Harold, and Stephanos had never played before and I think everyone had a good time. They got pretty much all the research done and were just exploring the house when I ran out of time. It’s a decent adventure with a LOT of possible props (most of which I got made up beforehand).

The Blog of Professor Beemish and the Great Dale Gambit is at:

Hope everyone enjoys it.

I've finally posted the role-playing journal for the D&D 3.5 Ed game of the Whispering Cairn run at CaesarCon a couple of weekends ago. It can be found here:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
I played Blinkenstaff (got that name off an accident report here at work), a mage of great knowledge and very little power. You might notice he doesn't get involved in combat unless combat comes to him.

Spoilers
Finally ran Call of C'thulhu again. This time it was Fear of Flying from Fearful Passages and Horrora in the Glen from Green and Pleasant Land. They can be found at:
http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.p...hat=Max_Writer
Note: There are two entries.
PCs were Benjamin Willows, Liam Smith, and Chip Mathers.
-
I ran the Doctor Who Role Playing Game this past weekend (FASA). The role-playing journal entry can be found here:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
PCs were Mr. John Smith (Time Lord), Collin Archer (rock star from 2003), and Standing Bear (Native American).
-
We finished up “The Horror in the Glen” last weekend. The characters are Benjamin Willows (assistant curator of the University Exhibit Museum), Liam Smith (private detective), and Chip Mathers (bounty hunter). It can be viewed here:
http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.p...hat=Max_Writer
Spoilers, btw.

I never thought of doing an RPG journal. All those RPG missions I played or GMed in the glorious 1980s are just a dim memory now. Looking back, I can only think of the hilarious moments my friends said or did, but not any specific mission in detail.
I do remember liking, of all the FASA missions, "Termination 1456" and the Doomsday one, though I can't remember why now. If I only had a journal............
-
While we sat around the fire Sunday night of Memorial Day Weekend, we got talking about a narrative group-story my friend DJ once ‘ran.’ People convinced him to run a similar one sitting there in the dark around the campfire and it was pretty fun. You can find the write up of the impromptu group story here:

Obsidian Portal is an online site to create a wiki for your game that is editable by your players (For most things)

Thanks Karq - I think I'm actually set up on Obsidian Portal though the Star Trek game has, unfortunately, been put on the back burner (lack of player interest).
Finally played Call of C’thulhu again. This time it is their first foray into Innsmouth with “The Crawford Inheritance.” The journal entry can be found here:
http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.p...hat=Max_Writer
Characters are:
• Professor Beaurigard Johanson - Asst. Prof of Archaeology at Miskatonic University (DJ)
• Veronica Vale - Flapper and Johanson’s distant cousin (Mel)
• Chip Mathers - Bounty Hunter and veteran of WWI and the Punitive Expedition
This was a rather slow one as I was trying to set the scene and the mood on this introduction to the shadowed town.
-
Played The Crawford Inheritance again finally and a little progress was made. It can be read at:
http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.p...hat=Max_Writer
Characters are:
• Benjamin Willows - museum cuarator
• Professor Beurigard Johanson - Assistant Professor of Archaeology at Miskatonic University
• Veronica Vale - Professor Johanson’s fourth cousin and flapper
• Liam Smith - Private investigator (from Ireland originally)
• Leaf Johanson - lumberjack
They did pretty well but got frustrated when the Innsmouthers would talk. There are spoilers so watch out.
-
The third and final installment of the Crawford Inheritance can be found at:
http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.p...hat=Max_Writer
Warning: Spoilers
Characters are:
• Benjamin Willows - Curator at the Miskatonic College Exhibit Museum
• Professor Beaurigard Johanson - Asst. Professor of Archaeology, Miskatonic University
• Chip Mathers - Bounty Hunter and veteran of WW1
• Liam Smith - Private Investigator
-

Role playing journal can be read at:
http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.p...hat=Max_Writer

I’ve finally gotten to run a character I haven’t been able to run in a long while: Falstaff. He’s a sorcerer/fighter/dragon disciple and hangs with a pack of dwarves. The role-playing journal entry for the last game session is here:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
Hope everyone likes it. Matt runs a fun D&D game.
-
I ran Call of C’thulhu this past weekend for a group of people who had never played the game before. The original beginning of this scenario appeared in the appendix of the 3rd Edition Call of C’thulhu boxed set as a scenario vignette for a beginning scenario for a campaign. I put together the rest of it, however.
It can be viewed at:
http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.p...hat=Max_Writer
Moretown and Dr. Haylett are both real, as is the article by the Honorable D. P. THOMPSON of Montpelier. The Mad River Valley exists.
Characters are:
• Professor Kati Brooks - Professor of Science at Radcliffe
• Charles Puccano - Barber from Boston
• Grace O’Conner - zookeeper at the Franklin Park Zoo, Boston
• Claire McAdams - Talent agent from Boston
• Jason Carthage - Museum Curator, Boston Museum of Art
No spoilers really. This is an original scenario (of sorts).
-
The newest role playing journal for the d20 Star Wars game I occasionally play in is located at:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
Terran Darklighter has left the party and has been replaced by the astromech droid R2-D42.
-
Just posted a role-playing journal for the sorcerer/dragon disciple Falstaff (my character in Matt McPike’s campaign). It can be found here:
http://blog.myspace.com/max_writer
It takes place in the World of Greyhawk. The other characters are:
Groth Stoutbrew — dwarven cleric of Clangeddin Silverbeard
Turk Stoutbrew — dwarven paladin
Glorack — Turk’s rhino mount
Luke Cooper — Ranger
Alexiah — Dwarven Fighter (female)
Matt is taking us through the Throne of Iuz adventure from Dungeon Magazine - a little much for our characters, it turned out.
-
The role playing journal for the C’thulhu scenario “We Have Met the Enemy” from Mortal Coils is posted at:
http://www.yog-sothoth.com/modules.p...hat=Max_Writer
Characters were:
• Professor Beurigard Johanson - Professor archeology at Miskatonic University
• Chip Mathers - Bounty Hunter
• Claire Bingham - Hooker
Spoilers.

So, the last time I posted here was just before losing my job. That explains a lot.
There are more journal entries posted if anyone is interested. In addition, I found a board on Trekspace for old Star Trek RPGers:
http://trekspace.ning.com/group/play...rtrekrpgsystem
Additionally, a re-posted my Star Trek games (all two of them) there:
