Call for Submissions: Klingons

Tell you what, guys. We didn't get the Klingon book we were hoping for, so the only thing to do is to write it ourselves. Or, rather, you guys need to write it yourselves, since I don't have as much interest in a Klingon book for CODA as some of you do.

You guys write things up, send them to me as attachments to klingons at patrickgoodman dot org, and I'll edit, develop, do layout, and host the thing. It'll be a long-term project, speed dependent upon submissions and how enthused I am about the current project I'm working on, as well as if I have paying projects to contend with. I won't be able to pay you with anything but gratitude, credit in the book, and the knowledge that you've given something of worth to the community.

Characters should be rules-legal and conform with the latest errata. Ships should be built using Starships. Any other questions can be sent to the email address above. No contribution is too big or too small.

EDIT: What's the wordcount your looking for on these chapters?

No firm wordcounts right now; this is one of those "let's see what happens" projects.

Did I send you a copy of the unpublished Klingon ICON generation book? It may give you an idea what the CODA book would have been like, since the same guys were involved.

You haven't, but it would be most welcome! Send it to the address above (unless it's huge, and then we'll work something out).

Oh, and just as a general note: While some holes will have to be filled in, I'd very much like to keep things as close to canon as possible. I know this is problematic in some ways, but I can dream....

There's also the SJohn's Untaken Treks & Steve Kenson's Lost Episodes Klingon stuff. Narrating in Klingon, Klingon History & Klingon Space that were being written for LUG.

Those were pre-Enterprise, though...

LUG Klingon package set to Patrick. Nothing in Enterprise really invalidated what we already knew about Klingons, it just filled in some of the cracks. The game data should still be good. If it conflicts, do what you would normally do.

I'll look those over, and I might even ask for their permission to use them. I know Steve and don't imagine he'd object (and it would make life a lot easier), but I'm not sure about approaching SJohn just because...well, I don't know him.

Well, it didn't quite invalidate 'canon,' but the LUGtrek history has them acquiring warp drive from the USS Ranger in 2218/23.

Oh, there'd have to be some rewriting of "history", but it wouldn't be a big deal. The encounter with the Ranger in 2218? First official contact between the Federation and the Klingons, though many of the Federation's races had met them before. For reasons of their own (I'm thinking the Romulans), they kind of kept to themselves from just before the founding of the UFP until they bumped into them again in 2218.

Still don't know how we'd be able to work fusions in with the canon, and so much of Mike's stuff just didn't, and wouldn't, jive with what was put on screen.

But Klin'Zhai as a philosophy...that I like. I like it a lot, and it does a lot to reconcile the TOS Klingons with the space biker vikings.

Now, I'm more familiar with Final Reflection than the FASAtrek sourcebook, but in the novel, at least, it didn't seem like that important a part of their society; more akin to pirates taking passengers as concubines than the deliberate experiment the word 'fusion' implies. Was it different in the sourcebook?

Yeah. In the FASA version they genetically engineered them with dna of the races they were working near. So klingon-human fusions near federation space, klingon-romulan for work within/near romulan space. The ridge heads were called Imperial klingons and were the top of the social structure with fusions being below them.

I think the fusion thing is mention in Final Reflection too, but mostly glossed over. For instance, Spock is considered a Human-Vulcan fusion, rather than a natural birth.


I think what Ford was hinting at was that different species probably wouldn't be able to produce offspring naturally. It would be very rare for two species to be genetically compatible.

The guys at FASA pretty much used the Final Reflection as their bible with the author's permission and ran with it.

The way I heard it, Ford and the FASA sourcebook writer were roomies...

Ford and one of the FantaSimulations Associates writers were indeed roomies, and Final Reflection and the 1st edition Klingon book were cooperatively written, with both projects gaiinng info from each other, and Ford writing some commentary for the game book.

As I heard it, John M. Ford wrote most of the cultural material in the FASA Klingons book, and the FantaSimulations folks (Guy McLimore, Greg Poehlein and David Tepool) churned out the game mechanics. Regardless of who wrote what, however, it was a groundbreaking supplement. And yes, I believe Ford and McLimore were college roomies.

Assuming this project is still ongoing, I just want to drop in and offer my encouragement. I absolutely intend to make use of it (i.e. snatch it as soon as it becomes available). The idea of running a Klingon campaign has already been discussed in my group with much approval. :D

So thank whoever posted links to Eaves' and Drexler's blogs, because I'm starting to get drawn back in–to defend the TOSiness of TOS, if nothing else : P

So expect some updates on the Klingon History front...

Oh, yeah, and BTFF11.

I can't get enough of the Eaves' and Drexler's blogs. :) They always post more incredible stuff that they have worked on and created. There was a link to another blog were the guy was working with Drexler on the Ships of the Fleet Calendar (I think.) He had done some beautiful images of the TOS Enterprise in a TOS-era drydock. Sadly, I can't remember which blog it was or would post it too.

King mentioned TOS and blogs it reminded me of the post, so I thought I would share. :D

I have a fair bit of stuff on my nomghar page. Most of it is non-system-specific. Use what you want. Note that the Klingon Archaeological Society was not my idea, but something a couple of my friends came up with when they were in Belgium. (Belgium, man! Just Belgium!) I played with a rationalisation and translation of it, though... As for Fusions, check out the IKS in the Triangle entry on my Rising Sun site. I think it may strike a chord... Adapt as required.

The problem with "Final Reflection" is that a lot of it has been invalidated by now. The one specific thing I remember is that, according to the book, Klingons had very short lifespans, and in canon they're almost at Vulcan level.

Actually, canon and the book agree on Klingon maturation rates. I don't recall if the book covered how long Klingons can live..

As far as I can remember, Klingons lived about 35-40 years.

And Krenn was... 6 when he played the games? Which would be early teens in human years? Yeah, it should match up with stuff like Alexander joining the KDF when he was 8.

No, but then, but then, most of Kang, Kor and Koloth's compatriots probably didn't make it past 40. Add in the fact that not dying in battle is apparently a serious taboo, and that may be implying hegh'bat is common for anyone too old to ship out.

Humans seem to be living to 100, 120ish with advanced medicine. Klingons are already tougher, but aside from violent death, there's little information on what Klingon healthcare is actually like for powerful (or once-powerful) members of the upper class and what that would mean for their potential lifespan. Martok complains about Klingon doctors being crap, but it's an Empire, and Kriosian physicians could've been all the rage when Kor was in his prime. If we say the whole Klingon metabolism and aging process does work on overdrive naturally (compared to humans), genetic 'deceleration' treatments might also be available that retard burnout.

you lot can use my "House H’JoQ" posted elsewhere on the boards. I did them up for the fun of it and you can edit as you will.

Issue 9 of Final Frontier is specifically about the Klingons. I rather liked the issue. It deal with small Klingon Houses in a specific sector. Issue 10 (or issue X) :D , continued some of the adventure from issue 9.

I also wondered if there was a system that could be used to build Houses like that (or heck maybe organizations) using a system like constructing a Starship. You could give it traits and such.


Hey, Tatterdemalion, Tomcat. Have you every thought about doing more random sectors or planets like that for the next FF? How about planet of the month or sector of the month? :D This month, a Ferengi world. ;D

Considering our release schedule, it'd be planet of the year. : P

It goes without saying, of course, that you're welcome to everything Klingon that I've offered up here or for BTFF. Have we got a working deadline for this project? I've got a few ideas rattling around in my brain pan, but I've also got hyper-ADD, so they'll take a bit of time to develop.

Nope, no deadline right now. I leave that to you guys; I'm just handling the development/editing of the thing. The actual writing and such I leave to those who have the most interest in the project.
