I'll have to see the sculpts before I comment, but man...I thought I might have had a chance to be over my plastic crack habit....
Oh, well, at least we might get a chance to finally pit Kirk vs Picard. :)
Yeah, when Star Wars Minis stopped I was thinking the same thing.
I would bet they would start with a ship game, but who knows. I'd love to have little plastic Trek people in any case :) Jem'Hadar versus Klingons FTW!
I loved WK's Horrorclix (RIP) and don't mind Heroclix. After seeing this posted around the net this morning I am very intriqued ads to what they come up with.
Scanning the net last night there seems to be much debate over whether the game will be characters (like regular clix) or a ship combat game. Either would be good but I would much rather have characters than ships because it gives an almost unlimited variety for future expansions. A ships game would be limited and knowing how WK tend to do non-unique versions of characters which can all be on the field at the same time (which bugs me in heroclix) I think it wouldn't sell as well. I remember WoTc releasing their Star Wars ship combat game and it was clunky and never got an expansion because so many of the classic ships were in the base set.
Well, the WotC SW Starships game failed mostly for two reasons
1) The rules were indeed clunky. Clunky enough that the line developer actually had a different ruleset that he wanted to release online (if he'd been allowed).
2) While people were willing to have 'bendy' PVC people minis, using the same material for the ships resulted in a crappy looking product. Not using stiff plastic was dumb. The 'classic' ships argument holds some water, but there could have easily been at least one expansion.
Anyway, that's all too tangential, apologies. I think you're right as far as there being more possiblities with characters, and the more I think about it, the more I'd actually kind of like to see little plastic men. Heck, I still have the FASA ship combat game to play with :)
My money is on ships rather then people as the hand phaser/disruptor is the great equlizer as far as personel combat goes.
Every time a new Star Trek game comes out, I get nostalgic for the old CCG. That one felt pretty wacky, but there was a definite Trek-ness to it.
There was a post on RPG.net from a developer. Looks like we're getting a character game and a starships game:

Hey there - Justin from WizKids Games. THere are 2 incarnations of game.
1: A Ship to Ship combat game - Pre-painted plastic minis where 2 players play head to head. It will use the HeroClix combat dial to track HPs, attack, damage, etc. Ship figures will not play with Marvel or DC characters though
2: A co-op euro style strategy game where you will play 1 of the ST crew and work with others to complete missions, just like the movies/TV shows. Again, the HeroClix dial will be used to track stats (skills in the case of the co-op game).
Hope that clarifies things.
BTW - I saw some of the digital sculpts for the ships and they look really good.
Wasn't expecting no. 2. Interesting. :)
Oddly, I am rather dissapointed by the ideas of game#2. I liked the idea of having a team (ala Heroclix) with kirk, spock and a team of red shirts taking on an opponent's Klingons on a Borg ship map. The ship game could be good though.
I'm glad that they are doing characters, although I don't care about the mechanics of the game as my only interest is to have minis for the RPG. And ships will be nice for the same reason.
So far, the detail I've seen in Clix minis beats GX/Citadel all to hell, while none of it comes up to Ral Partha standards. Sounds like a happy medium.
Te plastic detail can be a bit soft at times and the paint jobs range from good to passable thankfully I'm a fan of repainting Pre-Painted minis. I'm going to watch this with both anticipation and trepidation.:)
Some news from GenCon about the new Heroclix games:

Those models look pretty neat.
I'll second that.
I wish they would give us a bit more info about the game already.
You mean like this...

Cool. Thanks for posting that. Sounds very interesting. Now to get some of my gaming buddies to try it when it comes out.
That's... eerily close to ideas I had about how to do a Trek minis game, were you to combine them both in one game.
thanks for the article posts, guys. Scale or not, the ships look nice.
I was hoping for something a little less ... specific ... for the mission based game. Something presenting a variety of possible missions, or combinations of problems to solve. Ah well.
Some more info in the form of an interview with the Product Development manager at Wizkids...

Interesting points about the mini prototypes, and also about what ISN'T coming out (read the post and see!)
I'm so wanting to play that Star Trek Fleet Captain Game right about now!
What ships are we expecting? The interview says 10 to 12 ships per side. Let's stick to the Federation side. What classes will be included?
Some ships I could see being used of the top of my head, sorted roughly by era.
My guesses which class will be included are marked with an *.
NX-class[*]
Deadalus-class
Constitution-class
(Constitution-class refit?)[*]
Miranda-class[*]
Oberth-class
Excelsior-class[*]
Constellation-class[*]
Ambassador-class[*]
Galaxy-class [explicitly mentioned/seen][*]
Nebula-class[*]
Intrepid-class [explicitly mentioned/seen][*]
Akira-class[*]
Saber-class[*]
Steamrunner-class
Norway-class
Souvereign-class [explicitly mentioned/seen][*]
I'm not sure about the Runabouts from DS9, so I left them out.
I would be hard pressed to get together 10-12 different classes of Klingon (or later on Romulan) ships. Therefore I'm afraid that we won't see 12 ships per side, but ratehr 8 - 10.
In my oppinion, the mentioned expansion boxes might not come as pure Faction boxed sets (like a mentioned pure Romulan box) but will most likely include a variety of ships from associated powers. Dominion ships and Cardassian ships in one box for example.
What do you think?

The figures really look good!
Dissapointing. I'm only interested in a ship combat varient. This just looks pants and boring.
Each to his own. Ships prototypes were shown earlier in the thread. There have been some questions (mostly from me, now that I think of it) about figures. If you don't like figures, my post was not aimed at you. Feel free to browse other areas of the forums.
No need to be snarky. People have different tastes and likes.
Personally I had hopes that the character miniatures version of the game would be more like Heroclix/Horrorclix, with factions and played on different maps (engineering, alien ruins, Borg cube...etc).
Take at Gen Con, we have the first picture of the ship clix game.
Star Fleet Captains - Federation beta test ships
and we have a small page on the Wizkids site.
Looks good, but very...unpainted...
I for one am glad to see all eras of Trek represented rather than being force-fed the Abrams-verse.
Right. Nice then :)
There is also this one, from the WK site that shows painted though a bit small for detail.

Some details on the Trek Clix game can be found here: Star Trek Clix.
So far I am very intrigued though not so happy that it uses the same rules as standard Heroclix. Ships don't do hand to hand combat (one ship spoiled on that link has Super Strength!).
To be honest, I have no intention of playing this game as designed. I just want those ships for tactical starship combat models in my CODA Trek RPG when I run again.
