So far there are Best and Worst Sci-fi series of all time, so I'm going to do my own thread.
The best sci-fi films in my opinion are:
5. Return of the Jedi
4. Star Trek:First Contact/Star Trek 6
3. Highlander (I know it isn't pure sci-fi, I think that it deserves a place because it does have science fiction elements in it.)
2. Stargate
And the number one Sci-fi film is:

OK, OK. Usually I avoid this type of thread, but I'm a film freak, so I'll play. In no particular order, here are some of my faves:

James Cameron stuff (The Abyss, Aliens, Terminator)

Okay in no real order:
Star Trek: First Contact (the absolute best bit of Star Trek ever).
Laputa: the Flying Island (possibly a little bit borderline as far as being science fiction goes but if a giant floating island, robots and more general steampunk stuff goes doesn't make it a science fiction film I don't know what does . Anyway possibly Miyazaki's second best film after Princess Monomoke and thoroughly recommended).
Starchaser: the Legend of Orin (only just managed to get this on video from a local indoor market and it is the best film to ever rip off every science fiction film since Star Wars. Despite that still a fine film).
Empire Strikes Back (The absolute best Star Wars movie).
Godzilla (the original Japanese film, not the Americanised version with Raymond Burr and definitely not the god awful American version. Rubber suit Godzilla kicks ass!!!)

BLADE RUNNER (the director's cut, not the one with the crappy voice-over.)
2001: A Space Odyssey. (No sound in space and the SFX even hold up against the CGI of today.)
Metropolis. Incredible imagery, well done characters, and it's a silent! Can't beat Fritz Lang...mostly 'cause he's dead...
Alien. Realistic sets, clothing, etc... how nice. And the baddest mo-fo of an opponent.
Aliens or STII -- it's a tie for me.

I can't believe I left off 2001 and Blade Runner -- that's what happens when you think too hard.

I have an oldie but still aces in my opinion:
"Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea", James Mason top-notch profile as Captain Nemo
still is considered one the best combined with still-looks-good photography and special effects!

Blade Runner (Theatrical release that is still Film Noir with the voic overs and no stockfootage Unicorns from Legend)

The reason why I hadn't included any of the made-for-TV movies is because they didn't show up on the silver screen. I do agree with you though.... My fave of the TV movies is Babylon 5:In The Beginning. I also liked the mini-series: V, V:The Final Battle also.Quote:

Pretty much have to agree with all the above mentioned movies. Except T2. Neat effects, but it was the first movie all over again. Right down to the tank truck at the end. Except it was carrying liquid nitrogen instead of fuel. The only thing fresh in it was Robert Patrick character, the T2000 was it? Cool idea!

Okay, I never liked the sequels, but the original idea is nice. Even RPG-sustainable.
First of all I have to say that I do not count Star Trek and Star Wars as Sci-fi, so they will not appear here. ( ST is more and Utopia and Sw is actually Fantasy ).

How can it be that "Enemy Mine" didn't make the lists anywhere. Sure, it wasn't uber cool with special effects..but..well, heck.. I think it would be on *My* top ten anyway.

Anyone remember 'Interview with the Vampire' ? 'Queen of the Damned' is the sequel (based on the third of Anne Rice's novels - I understand they skipped the second as it's the same story as the first from a different POV). Assuming it gets completed, ClaudiaQuote:

However, my impression is that you're correct Dan. She dies on a planet noted for its cryogenic suspension facilities by drowning in an ice-cold lake - hmmm, suspicious or what?
I just love that show - but it just wouldn't be the same without Aeryn...

After giving this a little more thought I hereby present:
The 10 Best Science-Fiction Films of all time:
Star Trek: First Contact (the absolute best bit of Star Trek ever).
Laputa: the Flying Island.
Starchaser: the Legend of Orin.
Empire Strikes Back.
Godzilla.
The Planet of the Apes and Escape From the Planet of the Apes (How I managed to forget these two I don't know. Yes, all the other films in the series sucked big time but the original film has quite literally the most jaw dropping, "Where the f*****g hell did that come from?" ending for a 12 year old who watched the original and didn't get all the little clues in the film. As it happens the films were shown then in order, once a week so, after watching the second film and trying to figure out how the hell, after blowing the planet up in the second film, there was a third film I sat down and with a growing sense of dread to watch Escape. OH MY GOD!! what an ending. Possibly a better ending than the first film, anyway, MONKEYS RULE!)
Black Magic - M66 (Another fine anime, and yes, it does rip off the first Terminator movie to an extent but it still has some of the best battle scenes in Anime).
Pitch Black (I know certain friends of mine who would hang me high for even suggesting this but I preferred Pitch Black over any of the Aliens movies).
King Kong (1933) (Borderline Science Fiction but still a top giant monkey flick)

Here's a film I forgot (twice now):
Labyrinth- A film with so many apparantly bad things in it (David Bowie playing the Goblin Queen.. sorry.. King, Basil Brush riding around on the Dulux dog, and Jennifer Connoly who at least acts better in this than she did in the Rocketeer and more inane songs than the last Spice Girls album) shouldn't be this entertaining. All this and dance choreography by Gates McFadden.
Liked Enemy Mine, hated Labyrinth.

BEST sci-fi?? well here goes:
1)Buckaroo Banzai: One of the greatest most intelligent movies ever made.
2)Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea: The 1963 original with Wlater Pidgeon, I still get jazzed watching it.
3) Wings of Honneamise: The Right Stuff on an alien world, one of the best movies about man's conquest of space ever made. I hope you give it a chance if you have not seen it, and it will prove that not all anime is porn.
4) MST3K the Movie: What can I say, I love it.
5) Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea: Yes the Disney one, sue me.
6) Robocop: The first one, and only the first one.
7) Guyver 2: Dark Hero: Very cool, especially for the low buget, but well done, makes up for part one.
8) GUNHED: Cool cyber SF!
9) Matinee: Not really SF, but the "Mant" film within the film taps into so many of the 50's SF I love, I can't pass it up.
10) Pretty much anything pre 1971, yep Rocketship XM, Angry Red Planet, Forbidden Planet, The Sigma Barrier (Who remembers this one??), I love them all. BEHOLD THE POWER OF CHEESE.
Hmmm...let's see.
